Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with APS (Advanced Positioning Sensor)

Customer Review: BP Monitor for the elderly
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the Omron HEM 650 wrist bP monitor for my 85 year old Mother-In-Law. She was experiencing a sudden large increase in blood pressure. Her doctor placed her on medication but requested that she take her own blood pressure three times a day. We immediately purchased her a good standard cuff type monitor. After just two days it was apparent that the readings that she was reporting were grossly inaccurate. She was physically unable to get the cuff placed and tightned on her upper arm. When she received the HEM 650 she was able to properly use the monitor on her very first try. The automatic positioner worked great. She placed the monitor correctly at heart level. She recorded the readings and when she went to the doctor in two weeks his office readings matched her recorded readings with great accuracy. This is a high quality monitor that is very accurate. I recommend it for anyone whose dexterity would limit them from properly positioning and tighting a standard cuff.

Customer Review: good product for those who can hear well
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this for my older parents. My mother needs to monitor blood pressure and the ease of getting the cuff on is phenomenal. I did have to review the directions with them and get them set up, but it was easy for a younger person. I am a nurse practitioner and checked the accuracy with a traditional cuff and stethoscope, and it was within a few points. The problem for my parents is that the beeping mechanism which tells the patient that their arm is in the correct position for the reading is a frequency that neither of them can hear! My 50 yr old ears can hear it fine, but their 80 year old ears are challenged. The machine will still take the Bp, they just need to keep moving their arm around a bit until the cuff will inflate once the correct position is achieved. This is really a great feature of the machine. The only reason not to purchase this is if not hearing the correction beep is a concern. It is a handy, easy to use product and accurate.

Customer Review: Accurate, painless blood pressure monitoring
Summary: 5 Stars

This Omron A.P.S. HEM-650 is just what I needed. For whatever reason, blood pressure arm cuffs are very painful for me, and produce a very high blood pressure and pulse reading because of the intense pain I feel in my arm under the cuff when it is inflated (nearly unbearable). I bought this wrist monitor six months ago, and began recording my blood pressure readings, which showed normal blood pressure levels. Then I took it to my doctor's office, where the nurse tested it on herself and then compared it to her blood pressure using their arm cuff. The comparison showed the wrist monitor reading was the same as the arm cuff reading. My doctor approved the wrist monitor for my use, agreeing it gives an accurate reading. The wrist monitor records the date and time of each reading, and has a memory function so you can compare your current reading to your history of readings by pressing the memory button for each previous reading.

Customer Review: Handy tool
Summary: 5 Stars

My previous doctor had deduced that I had "white coat syndrome" because he could always get a lower BP reading from me than the nurse could, so I never worried when I was at another doctor's and had a higher than normal BP reading. Unfortunately my former doctor decided to close his practice and I have a new doctor who wasn't exactly sure I had white coat syndrome and asked me to keep track of my BP either at home or at a store. I decided to get this monitor after reading many reviews here and it has proven to be accurate. I took it to another doctor appointment a couple weeks ago. I had gotten a normal reading at home prior to going to the doctor. The reading was a bit high when the nurse took it and then I took it with my machine and it was very close to what the nurse had gotten, so it verified that I definitely have white coat syndrome. It's going to keep me from taking BP medication, so I'm happy about that!

Customer Review: Acceptable Perfomance
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used this device since February 2008 and it gives steady, consistent readings. One must be very careful when placing it on his wrist because the slightest mistake will trigger a misreading. If it's too tight, obviously you will get false readings. Many other considerations must be observed to get the right reading. Some include proper position, 10 to 15 minutes rest, about 30 minutes after a meal, you must be relaxed, etc. Interestingly, when I have BP taken in my doctor's office, none of these practices are observed. Sometimes you wonder just how accurate BP readings are when taken under varying conditions. Anyway, it helps keep you aware of your BP level, which assists in identifying potential problems before they become worse and, depending on how you look at it, it provides for some peace of mind. It's much more inexpensive than visiting your MD for a simple reading. Definitely worth the price.
