Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-711AC Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with Standard CuffCustomer Review: Auto BP Monitor - Squeese My Arm - Beep There It Is Summary: 5 Stars
EXPERIENCE: When I think about a digital device, the first thing that comes to mind is complexity. This is not necessarily a good thing, because you want a device that works easily and is user friendly. The monitor unit, cuff, power adaptor, and manual, all come in a nice protective case. All I had to do was hook up the power for the monitor, insert the cuff hose into the unit, and attach the cuff to my left arm. Make sure that the cuff is not too tight on your arm, you should be able to get one finger in between the cuff and your arm.
I have been very happy with this BP monitor because, all I have to do once I got it hooked up, and got the cuff on, is to hit the start button once to turn it on, and once more to start the BP checking process. The monitor will automatically pump up the cuff to a recommended amount, and after about 20-seconds, the process will be complete. The thing to remember is, just like the nurse who checks your BP at the doctors office, and needs to hear your pulse with the stethoscope, this monitor needs to hear yours as well. If there is anything in the room making loud noise, this monitor will naturally, error out, and you will have to repeat the process 2-minutes later.
Because of all the work I have been doing lately with tracking down and stopping my high blood pressure, I sort of feel like I am an expert. Anytime you move your body or do anything, your BP will go up. So, I recommend that you sit for 5-minutes before taking your BP. Have your feet flat on the ground, with your left arm at the level of your heart. After sitting for 5-minutes, take your BP. If you see a reading that seems high, even for you, go ahead and turn the unit off, wait another 5-minutes, and take it again. If the second check is lower, that's the accurate reading.
CONCLUSION: I think that this is a pretty accurate monitor, but it can get your BP wrong sometimes on the first attempt. A part of this could be yourself, if you were moving a lot prior to the reading. So this is why I recommend always checking your BP twice, to make sure you have the accurate reading. Other then that, I think this is a nice BP monitor and would recommend it for use by both young folks, and senior citizens.
Customer Review: I prefer this to the Hem-780 Summary: 5 Stars
I fully agree with the reviews by the 'Concerned Reader'. I had also looked at the same 2 models, this one and the Hem-780, and and am very glad I chose this, the cheaper, option. Apart from the memory being a little smaller (60 vs 90 readings) and the non-Comfit cuff, the machine itself is more or less the same in terms of accuracy and other functions. In fact, I prefer the regular type cuff to the Comfit one, which in practice can be quite bulky and requires a larger case to accommodate, so is not so portable.
I also like the fact it is fairly quiet in operation (some machines make a lot of noise and beeping during the reading process, which can be distracting). The irregular heartbeat indicator, though not exactly required, is an extra useful feature. In fact, I am surprised the Hem-780 does not have this function, which is available as standard on most new bp monitors these days.
One criticism is the fact Omron has incorporated the 'On/off' and 'Start' buttons into one, which means it is quite easy to start the machine accidentally when traveling (Omron's older bp monitor models used to have 2 separate buttons). Beware there are no batteries included, and 4AA's are required. However, the included AC adapter is probably all you need when not traveling. Also beware the AC adaptor is not the travel type so can only be used with US 110 voltage - I am from the UK, so will need to purchase a separate voltage transformer).
Size wise, the newer style Omron bp monitors are a little smaller in dimensions compared with older models, but the case is also unnecessarily high, again making it slightly bulky for traveling purposes.
Overall, I would thoroughly recommend this machine for home use. At this price, it is excellent value for money.
Customer Review: Omron product emits body odor smell Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased an OMRON blood pressure monitor with arm cuff - Model HEM-711AC in 2006 at a cost of $104.86.
I have used it fairly often since that time and had no problems with the use of the instrument and its readings. I did not use it routinely, but rather occasionally.
However, within the past year, I became aware that the monitor and its case emitted a very smelly odor. The odor resembles that of human body odor.
The odor was so strong that an individual who passed through my apartment remarked about it.
I believe the situation may be similar to reports that concern certain models of Apple laptops that are known to emit an odor of this sort. There is a fair amount of documentation on the internet about these situations.
I placed the unit and its case on my balcony and sought help from the OMRON company. A great deal of my time, via telephone calls and e-mails has been taken up in the past few months trying to get the company to understand the problem. They want me to return the product, something that I don't plan on doing, since even the instruction book has an extremely foul odor. I can't imagine taking everything to UPS or Federal Express for packaging.
I would suggest that anyone considering buying this product or a product of a similar nature take this situation into consideration. I furnished the OMRON company with a printout about the various instances where the Apple laptop information was posted, but this idea apparently was not convincing.
Customer Review: Quick, easy, accurate Summary: 5 Stars
Two of the previous reviewers noted that their monitors didn't accurately read their blood pressure. I'm wondering if they made the same mistake that I made with my first two readings. My first two readings were 20 points higher than normal!! And then I read the instructions and realized that the air pump had to be on the same side as the palm of your hand. Tried a third time, making sure I had the air pump properly positioned. The next reading was normal. What a relief.
When I was researching which monitor to get, I debated between the Omron HEM-780 and this one. For whatever reason, the HEM-780 sells more on Amazon. The only advantages I could see, however, were that it had a larger cuff, a so-called Comfit cuff, and saves the last 90 readings rather than the last 60. What sold me on this unit, however, was a feature that the HEM-780 doesn't have -- an irregular heart beat indicator (not mentioned in the Amazon.com description but shown in the PDF of the owner's manual at www.omronhealthcare.com). Since the 9"-13" upper arm cuff was fine for me, I bought this unit and it's perfect for my needs. The Omron technology is otherwise the same for both units and the cuff on this unit is also comfortable so no need for the Comfit cuff. If you need a larger cuff (up to 17"), buy the HEM-780. If not, save the $12, get the same technology with the added bonus of the irregular heart beat indicator.
Customer Review: Nothing But Trouble Summary: 2 Stars
I have to take my BP daily, so after reading reviews that were mostly favorable, I bought this one in May 2008. From the start the BP ran higher than at my doctors office...usually 10 to 15 points. Same for my husband, so we started subtracting that amount from our daily readings, and all was well until mid November 2oo8.
Suddenly the readings jumped 20 to 25 points higher than at the doctors office. The first time that happened I panicked, brought the machine in, and had it checked against my BP, which showed the machine reading 25 points higher both diastolic and systolic. I am sending the machine which is under warranty as it is only 6 months old to be repaired or replaced by the manufacture. I hope it will then be accurate in its readings.
I just ordered a manual blood pressure machine with a built in steththescope through Amazon, and will have it in 2 days. We will learn to use it for BP readings, and to gauge the accuracy of the repaired or replaced 711 AC. I prefer the ease of the electronic BP machines, but not the hassle of the high readings. This machine has been nothing but trouble from the start. Hopefully once it is returned, I will become a satisfied user. It might be that mine is a lemon, and others work great, but from my experience it is a loser.
I DO NOR RECOMMEND IT!!!!!
Susan
