Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-711AC Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with Standard CuffCustomer Review: Recommended & accurate: missing two bells Summary: 4 Stars
The Omron 711AC is a very easy to use, compact machine. It was one of five recommended by my physician. Yet compared with an older BP cuff that I bought from Medicine Shoppe a few years ago, there are two bells that are not included. The Medicine Shoppe machine has a buzzer that lets you know when the reading is complete. Also it has another beeper that helps you watch the progression. The 711AC, recommended by my MD at a price of $110 is a BEST BUY at Amazon. I find the memory feature a bit hard to use but more study is needed. This is a quality reliable BP cuff which takes up very little space. It is ACCURATE, having compared its results to those on the Medicine Shoppe unit. Yet perhaps those who don't need the memory feature, the 712 would be better. This is a BEST BUY and it can operate on batteries as well as electric power. I highly recommend it even though lacking one or two features. One feature I haven't seen yet which some readers might consider as frivolous is to have the readings that can be read in the dark. For one resting who wants to check their BP and doesn't want the lights on, the glowing feature would be great. I rate the 711 4 1/2****. The cuff is very large and quiet comfortable, too. doctork, palm bay FL
Customer Review: Just what the doctor ordered Summary: 5 Stars
I have this unit about one month now and am very impressed with it. You shouldn't have any trouble getting consistent readings if you read and follow the instructions carefully. Make sure the cuff is applied correctly to your left arm about a 1/2" above the elbow, the arrow on the cuff points to the inside of the elbow on the cuff, centered with the middle finger. The right arm could be used too. I suspect that if the unit is off it may be reading a "little" high, which of course is much better than a little low, but I'm not sure given the variability of blood pressure and the many variables than can effect readings slightly. It is consistent though.
My only misgiving about this unit is the limited functionality of the memory, particularly the inability to store reading for two people and not being able to store readings on a memory card or plug it in to a computer USB port to download readings to a spreadsheet so the data could be further analyzed and graphed. But, as this memory functionality was never advertised and given the price of this excellent unit, I gave it 5 stars. I would have gladly paid more if this data accessibility were an added function.
Customer Review: Almost excellent Summary: 4 Stars
The HEM-711AC is accurate as confirmed against doctor's measurements, it has memory enough to retain a good history and can be powered by battery &/or A/C. However, the time & date function fails if the batteries are not installed and working.
The "fuzzy logic" thing that helps the machine know how to pressure up and depressure accurately and consistently is a great addition to BP measuring. I was never very trusting of measurement taken by a series of different professionals who were in a hurry or overpressured the cuff.
The only feature I wish had been included is the averaging of all measurements in memory. With this model the only readings that are included in the averaging feature are the very recent ones. Useful if you want to know what your average BP has been this morning but no good if you are interested in seeing a trend for the week. Given the state of consumer electronics where cell phones can cook breakfast, I'm sure a pretty nice suite of memory, averaging and graphing features could be worked out cheaply.
That said, for about $50 the unit does what it advertised and does it very well.
Customer Review: A dangerously bad product Summary: 1 Stars
One gets the impression from other customer reviews of the HEM-711AC that it's a fine little machine if you read the instructions and use it properly. I made sure to do so, and was taken aback when my blood pressure readings were considerably higher than they'd ever been. I called customer service and had a nice chat in which the agent assured me that Omron's products were carefully checked before being put on the market, but that it was possible they might be damaged in shipping. She sent me instructions for returning the unit to Omron: I would be liable for shipping and a service charge. I wrote back: You've sold me a defective product, and now you want me to pay you to take it back? Omron replied: Well, okay, just this once we'll pay for the shipping. I sent the unit back to Amazon instead. Before I did, I visited the my doctor to confirm the Omron's readings were inaccurate. Systolic was off by about 10%, but diastolic was grossly high. My concern is that (1) my experience was not anomalous; and (2) that a lot of people will be needlessly (and expensively) alarmed by blood pressure readings that are way off the mark.
Customer Review: Seller sells old product as New Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased the Omron HEM-711 AC Automated blood pressure monitor on 2/22/2010. From the beginning it gave unreliable readings varying by over 60 points reading to reading. We took it to our primary care physician and was told it only gave a "close" reading 1 out of 4 times. I contacted the seller in May 2010 and was advised that the Amazon 30 day warranty had expired, and to contact the Omron. My wife felt we must be doing it wrong based on other reviews but I disagreed. Last week I went to my cardiologist and the monitor was reading too high by over 25 points. Today I contacted Omron and they took the serial number and asked me when I purchased it and if I had purchased it new. I told them I bought it new in Feb of 2010. They said the serial number told them it was manufactured in 2006. They walked me through resetting it and taking the pressure correctly. It read 186 over 85 compared to the doctor's reading last Friday of 122 over 82. No wonder the seller is offering it at a deep discount-it is 4 years old. Omron is allowing me to return it to them for repair or replacement but this seller appears to be unethical.
