Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-780 Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with ComFit Cuff

Customer Review: Best Investment for the Money
Summary: 5 Stars

My old manual BP cuff, which was not an Omron, that I had for years finally took it's last measurment when the cuff blew out. I went to my local Walgreens where I purchased it and picked up the same brand and type for a replacement. I used it for about a month before I went to my doctor for my regular appointment. I decided to bring it along and check it against his. Was I suprised. There was at least a 20 point difference! I returned the unit to Walgreens and was going to purchase the Omron 780, but they wanted over $100! So I ordered the 780HEM from Amazon at almost half that price with free shipping. It arrived within a few days and was packaged very securly. I've had the unit for over a month now and have taken it to two different doctors to have it checked. Both times my BP matched what their units showed. Both doctors told me they also recommend the Omron. I am very pleased with the unit and it is easy to operate. What I really like about it, is it will take and average day and evening readings as well as keep track of it for 8 weeks. I don't have to worry about someone using it to take their BP and messing up my results because it stores readings for two people. You can even use it for another family member or guest, even though it will not save the readings in the 'guest' mode. What is also a nice bonus it will let you know if you have an irregular heartbeat or you move during the test. It's portable because it runs on 4 AA batteries or an AC adapter which is included. The blood pressure cuff also fits larger arms as well as smaller arms so you won't have to purchase an extra large sized cuff. Since I am a heart patient I want a BP monitor that is accurate, reliable and easy to use. This is the unit that will do it all. To top it off I called Omron's customer service department before I purchased it and they were very knowledgable and answered all my questions from right here in the US! Just as a side note when I was in the hospital a few years ago, the nurse gave me the thermometer that she used to take my temperature to take home. I noticed the other day the name Omron was on it. So that tells me they do make realiable products. I highly recommend this unit for everyone that wants an accurate record of their BP.

Customer Review: great little machine
Summary: 5 Stars

good but not perfect: i give 4 1/2 stars.

this, i believe, is near the top of line machine from omron for its kind. i bought a lower grade omron at a cvs, then found this at amazon almost for the same price...hence the swap.

differences from the lower grade omron: comfitcuff makes it a little easier to wrap the cuff around your arm--regular cuff keeps moving while you trying to wrap tight. but not sure this comfitcuff will fit large arms. this come w/ a power adaptor and a little thin polyester case. can be run on battery power too.

it's very easy to use. it takes a little effort to learn the advanced features that are not essential but useful-- give you various averages, night, day, most recent monitor, etc etc. this machine automatically stores past reading data upto 8 weeks i believe, into storage bank A or B, depending on where you set the A/B storage switch on.

i'm no expert but it appears to give an accuarate reading. my mother would go to a sam's store and get a free blood pressure and compare it with this w/ no significant different. my mother uses it fequently for a month now, but haven't replaced the battery yet.
the product picture shown is not accurate. what i received in the mail is a bit different w/ more updated features--it's missing an A/B storage switch just above the start button.

i'm not sure whether omron makes a better/more value product than others. i have no point of cross reference. i asked a pharmacist at a cvs and she said all monitors are pretty reliable, unless they are wrist monitors. but what i can see is, omron appears to be a pretty well known, widespread and reliable brand. and it's american made.

i've only had this for one month. everything works well so far. mechanically speaking, it appears to have good build quality. however, i'm not sure whether the detachable connection between the air tube and the console will stay air-tight after 5-10 years use and abuse. they could have designed it w/ additional false-safe securing mechanism in case the the connection gets loose from wear/tear.

overall i'm happy w/ my purchase. this gets the job done.

Customer Review: Very Good Blood Pressure Monitor
Summary: 4 Stars

The Omron HEM-780 does a creditable job. The added features--memory, A and B systems, provisions for pulse rate as well as systolic and diastolic readings--are a big help. I'm less clear about the advantages of averaging, however.

I have owned my unit for well over a month. A couple of weeks ago I decided to check my meter's levels against the monitor in my doctor's office. We did a simultaneous reading--their cuff on my right arm and my cuff on my left--and produced readings some 14 points different. I phoned the Omron people about this and they said I had done it all wrong: Measure the pressure on one arm only, taking readings 15 minutes apart with the separate cuffs. Okay, I went back to the MD's office, hooked up and we did the readings as directed (in a different exam room with a different cuff for the MD's monitor). We got the same numbers as we did with the earlier reading!

This is a system that doctors--including my GP--recommend and their conclusion is that if the Omron reading is within 20 points that's good enough. The Omron people don't agree.

There are a great many variables that can help explain the difference in the readings. Nevertheless, notwithstanding exactness, you will certainly be able to monitor trends with the Omron.

Despite the fact that I suffered a heart attack the same night that I had made the comparison readings in the MD's office, I plan to stick with the machine I have. It is convenient, easy to use, and enjoys the confidence of my GP and (now) my cardiologist.

Please don't take this as a negative review. I am quite satisfied with the Omron HEM-780. Like any machine it has its pros and cons. The machine didn't cause my cardiac episode and my MD had already prescribed medication based on my blood pressure, but the pharmacy didn't have time to fill it. The Omron has helped me both before and after my hospital stay and I recommend it for those who need to monitor their blood pressure.

Customer Review: Question the length of time accurate, a bad experience
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this cuff 8/08 after much research, approx 3 mo ago my BP was very high in the Dr's office. He wouldn't change or add meds until my cuff was checked in the office. When checked the numbers were 20 points off. My Nephrologist relies on my home numbers as my numbers are normal at home. I had been to a Cardiologist approx 1 mo prior to this appt & gave him 6 mo of BP's. Due to the numbers he stopped 2 BP meds. After this experience I had to explain the changes to him that occurred. I was so upset as I thgt I'd purchased the best on the market. I called Omron & repr really questioned the validity of my complaint. I need to add I am an RN. She asked: Was the BP taken correctly? etc, etc, etc. This is a Nephrologist..a hypertension specialist!..Enroute home I did purchase another 780 & hope it will last longed than 1 1/2 yrs. I am so discouragd w Omron, that I am tired of fighting the battle to replace this...they will want to repair or whatever.. is is worth shipping for a $60 machine? I repurchased enroute [a 780] home as I was cut for time to research for a better quality cuff. I will seriously reconsider buying any omron product again as I have a pedometer [2 yrs old] that I sent back & they returned it w a new battery. I had been to Radio Shack & purchased abt 2 or 3 batteries. They told me the sensor was bad. Tired of the battles. They have lost a customer. In truth, the Nephologist's technician said that they do have 1 in their office...don't use often but when I was in w my cuff & the numbers were off, she hunted for theirs & couldn't locate. She said that's the one they recommend for pts. Of course they use the regular cuff & stethoscope in the office. I again only bgt this as I was cut for time & really upset about the entire incident. The real question is, do they only last 1 year or so? I have no idea how long my numbers were off. Again I was annoyed w Omron's representative. Good luck.

Customer Review: Good Purchase; Revealed a problem
Summary: 5 Stars

I read a lot of reviews on a variety of sites and chose this brand because it seemed to be the most preferred I chose this model because both my husband can store our records separately. Good idea; it revealed an unsuspected problem with my husband's heart!

I took it in to test alongside my doctor's equipment and it passed the test. I also have an Omron wrist (it was also tested) which I thought 'd prefer since it was easier to put on, but it's not as sensitive as the larger arm cuff model, which isn't really much harder to put on.

I reviewed this cuff, as above, after buying it to monitor problems I was having. These are additonal remarks:

My husband tried it "for fun". He's a jogger, non-smoker, etc., and very confident that his heart was in fine condition. This cuff constantly showed that he had an irregular heartbeat. After his physical, which went well, he mentioned this to his doctor. His doctor, who had never detected a problem, said it was worth checking into. It was; my husband has a problem that has not become serious yet, but is being monitored by a cardiologist. Although his heart is reasonably healthy, irregular heartbeats can result in bloodclots due to the interruption in bloodflow which can cause strokes, and he now knows what to watch for.

I had been with him following knee surgeries, and his heartbeat was steady...that was about 5 years ago. After this cuff indicated a problem and he was tested, I was there when the cardiologist ran tests recently, and it was scary to listen to the monitor and realize how unsteady the beat had become (especially when there was no beat for long periods). We - and his doctor - would never have suspected he might have a problem if we had not had this cuff. It gave us a "heads-up" warning.
