Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-780 Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with ComFit CuffCustomer Review: Absolutely PERFECT for pregnancy monitoring Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for 2 specific reasons (and in order); 1) my wife is pregnant and her blood pressure was elevated during successive visits, and 2) I range from normal to just below hypertensive. I felt it was the perfect opportunity to purchase a blood pressure monitor to handle both issues, and to provide a monitor for both of us once our child is born. After doing some quick research, I chose this model.
This model is outstanding in its simplicity and accuracy. I was very concerned when we began using this, as my wife's blood pressure was reading out as perfectly normal. We went to the doctor two days after receiving this monitor, and low and behold, it was accurate. I mean, accurate within 3 units on both numbers. I attribute the difference to either the visit or human error/timing. Either way, this machine is great!
It is simple for anyone to use, it keeps up with irregular heartbeats, blood pressure, heart rate, weekly changes, etc...
One of the other great features is the cuff. I was into bodybuilding for almost a decade, so my arms are a bit larger than the average person, so finding cuffs for me is a little more difficult than most. My wife, a very petite woman, has a small arm and has the same issues, just on the opposite end of the spectrum. Both of us are able to use the device without any issues. I recommend this for anyone who is looking for a good, accurate monitor.
Pros: Accuracy, ease of use, cuff adjustment sizes, cost
Cons: None that I am aware of yet.
Customer Review: Readings were inaccurate on two of these monitors Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this unit because of the good reviews and because a relative who is a physician had one for himself that he liked. It's easy to use and I liked the features on it. But I was disappointed with it--twice. I tried one for a couple of weeks and found that the measurements were clearly too low, so I returned it to Amazon. I had them replace it with the same model, thinking that maybe I had just gotten a bad one the first time. The readings on the second unit were very similar to the first one. I brought it to my doctor's office and compared it to their readings three or four times within a ten-minute period. Each time the top (systolic) reading on the Omron was at least 12 to 15 points lower than the doctor's. The diastolic was also inaccurate for at least some of the readings (20 points higher than the doctor's in one case). I'm going to return the second unit to Amazon today.
I called the company and spoke to someone there. He wasn't particularly informative, but said that some Omron models don't work so well for some people. My arm is an average size, so I don't think that was an issue, but he suggested trying a model that has a smaller cuff. Maybe I'll try that... or maybe I'll try another brand.
If you do buy it, I suggest checking it against a doctor's BP monitor within a couple of weeks of purchasing it so you can return it to Amazon for a refund or replacement without any problem if it's not accurate.
Customer Review: Simply does not give accurate readings Summary: 1 Stars
After seeing the hundreds of positive reviews for this product, I just had to add my two cents. I don't mistrust that people have had good experiences with this machine, but I can definitely say it is not working at all in my situation. I bought this product in early April for my Mom who had had a heart attack. Needless to say, it's now pretty crucial for her that she monitor her BP. Well, I don't know if this cuff was made for people who are very tall and wide or something, but the cuff is far too huge and loose for a thin woman who is only 5'2". Even when you pull the cuff as tightly as possible, it's still barely squeezes you and the cuff is so long/tall, it covers almost her entire upper arm. I don't know if this is why it does not read her BP accurately, but either way - it's almost always between 10-30 points lower than reality. In fact, it consistently reads my BP between 80 over 60 to 70 over 50!!
We have taken it into two different Dr.s' offices who had confirmed that the monitor indeed reads very low and inaccurately. This is seriously disappointing as money does not grow on trees for us and we're out $70 for a machine that does nothing to help prevent further heart troubles for my Mom.
On top of that, I apparently unable to return it.
Just had to let people know this is not always the machine that 800 positive reviews would have you think it is!
Customer Review: More than enough! Summary: 5 Stars
I like the machine and would buy again. It is much faster on inflate and deflate. The machine I had before you could actually count the pulse and you would second guess your BP thus leading to "self-fulfilling prophecies". This one is fast so by the time you think about it it is done. It seems to be slightly more accurate than the old one and measurers the same each time.
Unit has so many features that I do not use most of them but will probably start utilizing some of the capabilities as we start our travel season. Right now I have a spreadsheet that calculates a running average but the machine does that too. It also has a evening average and a morning average plus some other features like a clock and two person mode. My dead unit did not have an AC adapter but this one does so if the batteries go dead you can always plug it in. There is a three reading mode that I find usless - it takes you BP three times in a row and I guess that is supposed to give a better short term reading.
I was familiar with my old cuff and the new unit has a much different feel and is much different on how it is put on the arm. It took a few days getting used to it but now I like it better that the previous method. The Amazon price was as cheap as I could find when you figure the free shipping but of course Amazon knows this and prices accordingly.
Customer Review: Great Monitor for self study of blood pressures. Summary: 5 Stars
The HEM-780 BP Monitor is great for home study. I am able to establish relationships of blood pressure to various time periods of the day. Also it can show the various effects created by different beverages with [...] such as coffee, soda, etc...
However it's another story when you try and tell a doctor or nurse your average blood pressure by showing them the results. The physicians tend to rely on one test by a nurse or themselves at the time they give the test. This is to bad, it allows for misdianosis and over perscribing of medications. I have had these conflicts with more than one doctor and many nurses.
I believe this BP moniter is excellent for averaging results and the medical community needs to accept averaging over a single test.
I have been an EMT for 6 years and have done thousands of blood pressure readings. A single test on any meter or monitor is far from acturate for blood pressure evaluation.
I can tell you this! If a doctor or nurse informs you that your blood pressure in high and wants to put you on blood pressure meds or restrictions, buy a very good monitor such as the Omron HEM-780 Automatic and log the results for yourself. It's up to you to protect your body system for yourself from over medication which in some cases can be very dangerous. Get as many opinions as possible. Good luck!
