Customer Reviews of Omron HEM-780 Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with ComFit Cuff

Customer Review: Outstanding quality, consistency and accuracy!
Summary: 5 Stars

Outstanding quality, consistency and accuracy! At the end of the day that is all you can ask from a blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer). A few things to bear in mind: In consecutive readings done at the same time, you will see a trend from higher to lower blood pressure as you "learn" to lower your own pressure. Also, your blood pressure at home will be lower than that you obtain at your doctor's office until you learn to overcome the anxiety normally associated with the doctor's office. This is normal and is one of the main reasons to obtain a home blood pressure monitor. Also, your pressure will fluctuate from day to day and even during a blood pressure monitoring session. So don't automatically assume that the gauge is not giving accurate readings! Trust me, it is.

This monitor has been extensively tested against measurements obtained at the doctor's office and has been determined to be as accurate a method of determining blood pressure as you would obtain at the doctor's office - actually, more accurate since the anxiety factor is eliminated.

So if you are looking for the best home blood monitor device on the market look no further. Just made sure and trust it!

I heartily endorse this product.

Customer Review: Warranty Shenanigans
Summary: 3 Stars

The Omron HEM-780 works well. Amazon service was Five Stars, as usual.

I subtracted two stars for the following reasons.

The 5 year Warranty does not cover the cuff! Nowhere on the box or in the description does it say this. The cuff (probably the most likely part to break) has a miserable 1 year Warranty.

Worse yet, the customer has to pay shipping both ways for Warranty service. Omron, take a lesson from Peerless faucets. With Peerless, all the customer does is call an 800 number, let them know what broke, and replacement parts are on the way, prepaid.

Second problem, the hours for detection of Morning Hypertension are not adjustable. I guess Omron is not aware that there are millions of shift workers in the U.S.

Third, the cuff is too tall. To get the bottom of it above the elbow as required causes the top of the cuff to dig uncomfortably into my armpit.

Last, and less serious, there is an apparent typo in the Instruction Manual. Page 12 suggests contacting your physician if "the HEARTBEAT SYMBOL" (their caps) appears on the display. Since all living patients will have the heartbeat symbol displayed, I suspect that they meant the Irregular Heartbeat Symbol.

Customer Review: Disappointed
Summary: 1 Stars

Years ago, I purchased an Omron blood pressure monitor (HEM-705CP) for my wife. I was disappointed in its performance. Readings were inconsistent, varying as much as 25 points between consecutive readings taken at 5 minute intervals. Moreover, results differed markedly from those taken with the traditional cuff and sphygmomanometer which I have used for many years. Telephone calls made to Omron provided no explanation or suggestions. In spite of a 3 yr warranty, they made no offer to check out the machine or replace it. So the useless device sat in its box for many years. Recently I purchased the HEM-780 only after it was highly recommended by my pharmacist and by the many good Amazon reviews. Unfortunately, the new device shows the same inconsistencies. Consecutive readings at 5 minute intervals are sometimes close and sometimes not. I have noted differences as much as 30 points. It is supposed to pick up heart beat irregularity, but it doesn't. Atrial fibrillation which I can pick up easily just by checking the pulse is missed by the machine. The cuff is easy to put on, and it is convenient to be able to store daytime and nighttime measurements in memory, but I am disappointed in the performance and lack confidence in its results.

Customer Review: worthwhile purchase that prevented being medicated
Summary: 5 Stars

True story. Out of the blue was found to have high blood pressure readings (~150/90) by my primary care physician, so was sent to the cardiologist, where similar readings were detected. With no further testing, cardiologist wanted to put me on blood pressure medication, claiming that the medication was no big deal but I'd be on it for life. I resisted and he suggested I buy an Omron monitor and monitor my blood pressure at home for a month. Surprise surprise, my blood pressure with the Omron was consistently around 110/65. Went back to the cardiologist and the higher reading came back. Thankfully the nurse recognized that my pressure in the doctor's office was being taken with a small blood pressure cuff, and when she used a large cuff my pressure was 110/65. Go figure - I go from thinking I have hypertension and nearly being put on a blood pressure medication for life to having perfectly normal blood pressure, simply because an improper size cuff was being used. Thankfully the Omron gave me piece of mind and reassured me that the problem was not with me, it was with the highly trained professionals who apparently love to prescribe medication at the drop of a hat. Turns out I didn't need to purchase the Omron, but I am very glad I did.

Customer Review: Happy first-time user of blood-pressure monitor
Summary: 5 Stars

I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, but the doctor thought that I was really suffering from 'white coat syndrom', in which points are added to your pressure just being around a doctor. Then I went on Amazon, and found that it had a solid 5-star rating from over 60 customers and decided to buy it. The Amazon price, by the way, was excellent, at least compared with local pharmacy prices.

Bottom line is that it is easy to use, has a memory, keeps an average of the last three readings, and that was all I expected or wanted. (My blood pressure, thankfully, seems lower too.)

I did my review not looking at any other reviews or talking to anybody so I would not be influenced in any way. By the way, I'm amazed at the length of some of the reviews and will be sure to read them later after I write my review.

I do plan to take it with me to the doctor's office next time to make sure it agrees with his machine. I think that is a wise thing to do, though I have no reason to think there will be any variation.

(Follow-up on July 10, 2006: I did take my monitor to the doctor's office, and I'm glad to report that he confirmed that it was accurate compared to his monitor.)
