Customer Reviews of Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer

Customer Review: Made well and accurate
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this product because of the overwhelmingly good reviews and the affordable price. I wanted to find a product that I could put in my front pant pocket rather than clipped to my waistband, so I could keep track of my progress discretely (I borrowed my friend's Sportline brand pedometer and I didn't like that it stuck out on my waistband, though, it seemed to be quite accurate). But I was concerned that the reset button would get pushed when I wore tighter pants or it got bumped by things in my pocket. Occasionally, the mode button will get pushed by accident, but that's not a problem at all since it just shows your aerobic steps, calories burnt, or distance traveled. With a couple of pushes you are back to the total steps taken for the day. I think the reset button has to be pushed for a few seconds before it will actually reset. I've been using it for about 3 weeks with it always in my pocket and it has never reset. I just loop the strap around my belt loop for security and put the pedometer in my pocket. It's small and slim enough that I don't notice it in my pocket unless I'm wearing tighter pants, but even then I just readjust it a little and it's fine. I've never used the holster or security clip. The only thing I might change is to have an on/off switch to save battery life. It's nice to have a history of the past 7 days. I like that I can put it in my front shirt pocket as well. The fact that it resets to zero steps at midnight isn't a selling point for me. I'd rather reset it myself since I don't usually go to bed before midnight. Or you should be able to set it to your own schedule if you have an odd schedule. Not a big deal, though. Overall, a very good deal for all the options it has and it appears to be well-made and sturdy. I would purchase it again without reservation.

Customer Review: No Clomping nor Runway Walking Necessary
Summary: 4 Stars

I have owned several pedometers in the past and had given up on them because they never counted my footsteps. However, I purchased this unit based on the positive feedback here and elsewhere. I am very glad I did.

It is not necessary to clomp around or lunge about like a moron in order for it to record footsteps. I have counted my steps and checked the tally a number of times and I would say that it records most of them.

I like the clip system. The unit has both a large clip holster and a guy line with clip in case the large clip comes off. I have a physical job and there have been times when if the holster clip hadn't released from my pocket then it surely would have snapped. The guy line is short and I simply resnapped the pedometer to my pocket and went on my merry way.

Since the pedometer works in many positions I can put it in my pocket if I have to work in a dusty area. I like that I don't have to worry that it is not recording because of it's position.

I did ding it by one star because the stride length options are ridiculously limited at a maximum of 4'. Although I am just over 5' my stride is 5'. I tested again and again - even to lengths of 100' just to make sure. My stride hasn't changed since I measured it ten years ago (although I was really hoping because it would make the other features easier to use). Because of this limitation, I entered my half-stride distance and then I calculate the real values. This doesn't make a difference for number of steps - just calories and distance traveled. Based on this limitation I am glad I didn't spring for the upgraded computer version.

I would recommend this unit to anyone, especially anyone who has had issues with pedometers not registering steps.

Customer Review: Submerged in water, and still works!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic pedometer! Not only is it completely accurate, it's ridiculously durable as well.
I accidentally left the pedometer in the pocket of a pair of shorts, and ran it through a complete wash cycle with a load of clothes. When I realized what I had done, I was heartbroken. I knew there was no way the pedometer could survive something like that and still work.
I took the battery out of the pedometer, and laid it all out on a table to dry. I put the battery back in in the morning, and found that while the numbers came up, none of the buttons worked.
I took it apart and again and left it to dry out some more. Just as I was about to get back on amazon to order a replacement pedometer, I figured I'd put the old washed one back together and try it one more time. And miracle of miracles, it worked!
I've had my pedometer for about 6 months now. I wear it all day, every day. It took a bit of adjustment to figure out how to wear it without it falling off, as the clip is quite different from my old pedometer. But I don't mind the larger clip as this pedometer is so, so much more accurate than all the previous pedometers I've tried!
This one keeps track of every step you take. It's easy to go in and reset it. I do that regularly as I'm dropping pounds, and have to change my weight set in the pedometer.
I highly recommend buying this pedometer. It's durable and survives most anything (wash cycles, frequent drops, etc.), and it will consistently give you an accurate step count, which is the whole reason for a pedometer.
I've had nothing but great experiences with my pedometer. In fact, I ended up purchasing one for my husband, two for my parents and two for my in-laws. And nobody has had any complaints. It's a great value for your money!

Customer Review: walking is the magic wand
Summary: 5 Stars

I've struggled with weight most of my life and by December of 2005 I was 247lbs. I bought the Step Diet book as well as this pedometer and my life changed. I read in the book that a normal, active adult usually takes about 10,000 steps a day. So, I made that my goal. This pedometer was easy to use. You do have to program it by putting in your weight, height and stride measurements and you'll be ready to go. I wore it all day at work and after the first day, I saw that I only took 2,000 steps! I was kind of bummed, but it was a real eye-opener. I'm not a naturally competitive person, but for some reason, wearing this pedometer, I wanted to beat my record of steps taken every day. By the end of the week, I was taking 10,000 steps and I made myself walk as long as it took to get there. This took me usually about 1.5 -2hrs. It might sound like a lot of time, but I got very used to it. I walked practically every day in 2006 and got down to 144lbs. I'm keeping it off and find that I don't have to walk as much as I used to to maintain my weight. But I still walk for at least 30 minutes a day. I've tried Weight Watchers, Slim Fast, E-Diets, Grapefruit diet, etc, and of course I couldn't stick to either and ended up gaining more weight. All I needed to do was do what people have been telling me for years: eat right and walk. I did, and the pounds came off. This product works remarkably well and was easy to program. The only thing about it that could be improved is the clip on the back that clips on to your pants. It's a bit too short so I have to be careful it doesn't come off when I sit down or bend. Other than that, this product has been very reliable and was such a good investment. I highly recommend it and hope it helps to encourage others as much as it did me.

Customer Review: Fine Measuring Device
Summary: 4 Stars

I've used the Omron HJ-112 Pedometer for several months.
Pro: Comes with a fine carrier that has a spring belt clip and a securing tether line that will prevent the loss of the unit when it is knocked out of the holster while walking, bending, or sitting. Nice Touch!
The digital read-out is in large numbers (great for those of us over 40 years).
For those of us watching calories, the device calculates the caloric expenditure of the exercise.
A clock with hour and minute features is selectable.
The read-out differentiates aerobic activity and non-aerobic activity. A brisk walk is aerobic; walking around the house and yard is non-aerobic. Very useful!
A separate timer tells you how many minutes of aerobic steps you have walked.
After setting up the measuring parameters, the device will accurately display how many miles (to within a hundreth of a mile) you have walked.
All data is retained for look-up for a 7 day period. Each day the device resets the counter to "0" so the day's data can be seen.

CON: The watch could use a seconds position to determine heart rate.

14November2009 FOLLOW-UP
An additional comment worth mentioning: The battery life is terrible. The original battery and every replacement Ray-O-Vac battery bought at Wal-Mart only lasted a few months. One reason may be that the unit cannot be shut-off without removing the battery. A comparison can be made to my digital cat-eye bike odometer and Casio digital wristwatch. Their batteries last around 5 years. To be sure the problem is not with the Wal-Mart batteries I am now switching to Target's Energizer battery. I'll get back with the results.
