Customer Reviews of Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer

Customer Review: Small, simple, and accurate
Summary: 5 Stars

As a new mom with a full-time career, one of the things I gave up in order to spend more time with my new baby was my nightly workout at the gym. I still needed to lose some baby weight, though, and found a couple things that worked without the guilt of spending more time away from my son. First came workouts that include baby (and there are a couple good DVDs available on Amazon for those!), then evening walks with my husband and son followed with warmer weather.

We enjoyed our walks so much that I decided to try the 10,000 steps a day program. After researching Consumer Reports and the reviews on this site, I purchased the Omron HJ112, and couldn't be happier. The unit is very easy to use, and because you enter your weight, stride, and other information at set-up, it tracks calorie expenditure and distance very accurately.

At work, I can either slip it into a pocket or clip it on my waistband to measure the number of steps I take each day. As another reviewer mentioned, it also measures steps very accurately even when placed in a pocketbook, as long as you hold your bag close to your body.

The Omron automatically resets itself to 0 at the end of each day, so you can just attach it to your belt (or wherever!) when you dress in the morning and go. That's a feature that I love, because I know I'd invariably forget to reset it if I had to do it myself. It will also keep your past stats including steps, aerobic steps and time, distance, and calories burned, in memory for the past seven days.

This little unit is an absolute gem. The last remaining baby pounds have been coming off steadily since I started walking more, and being able to see the number of steps creeping up as the day goes on really motivates me to get up and around more often.

I highly recommend the Omron HJ112 to anyone looking for a reliable, accurate, and easy-to-use pedometer. I won't buy anything else!

Customer Review: Excellent! I love this pedometer!!!! Buy this one!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this pedometer after looking at many, some quite a bit more expensive and some super cheap. This one is the way to go! I have rheumatoid arthritis and I was looking to increase my walking in general and with my daughter in her stroller. I wanted to know how far I was going both in distance and steps and this pedometer is great!!!!! It's not the old school kind that can be set off by odd movements and it not only caculates steps, it calculates aerobic steps, distance and Kcal burned. It resets itself at midnight so it's ready to put on the next morning and it saves 7 days worth of data! It's easy to use and easy to see and since you put in your personal info before using (very easy) it can give you additional info that the old pedometers can't give. The price is great and I love mine!!!! It actually motivates me to walk more because I can SEE what I've done!!!!You would be AMAZED how fast the steps add up! The most recent studies say that you should walk 10,000 steps a day for health and that's what I'm going for. It's not too hard for that to hard for that to add up! You can clip it to your waistband or belt, put it in your pocket or put it in your purse all of which are really handy! It does come with a safety leash to prevent loss but the clip is plastic so I decided to purchase an additional safety leash for it with a metal clip. I can't say how the plastic clip on the safety leash performs because I didn't use it. I DO Recommend using either the enclosed safety leash or buy one with a metal clip because the clip on the back of the pedometer is not enough to keep it on your waistband or belt without losing it. Mine has popped off when going from sitting to standing or crawling aound #doing housework, picking up my daughters toys ect.). Regardless, I LOVE this pedometer and I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!!!!!! Just use the enclosed safety leash or buy an addition one for $2 or so with a metal clip and you will be VERY happy!!!!!!

Customer Review: Worked for a while...
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this product a litte over a month ago. After it got here, I carefully measured my 10 step walking distance as they instruct you to do. Once I programmed my pedometer to my standards, I began using it. It worked great when I first got it. I would walk 10 steps and it would count 10 (sometimes 11 or so) steps. Overall, it was a good product for a while.

Throughout the first week I would test it to see if it was still accurate. To my delight, it did remained accurate. I recommened it to some family and then they purchaced some. It wasn't until I helped one of them set up theirs that I realized how much of a piece of junk this thing is (at least ours). I carefully helped one of my family members measure their stride and then set up the pedometer. When she tried it out, it was very innacurate. We spent more time trying to accuartely measure the correct walking pace. Afterwards we tried again. Still, it was innaccurate. I then was curious and checked mine to see if it was working; it was not. If I were to walk 10 steps, it would count 17. If I were to walk 5-6 steps, it would usually count 0 steps and sometims maybe 12-13. The same was happening with my family members. The product would either count too much, or not count at all.

I called the Omron number and asked what we should do. She recommened we reset the pedometer and reprogram it. We did. Still, the thing was messing up. Then we remeasured our walking pace and repgrogrammed it again. Still, nothing. Overall we spent about 2 hours trying to get the things to work. I don't know if our products were defects or if the product itself just doesn't work. However, I do NOT RECOMMEND this product based on my personal experience.

Final thought: This product does not work. Some may work; others may not. If you want to take a gamble, go ahead and buy it. If you want to save yourself the effort, look elsewhere.

Customer Review: Fair but not as I had expected
Summary: 2 Stars

After reading all of the favorable reviews about the Omron HJ-112, I decided to get it since it was a step up from the dial pedometer I was using (at least I thought). I will say I agree with the others about the ease and convenience of the unit. Once you set the clock, you never have to think twice about resetting it every morning. It's user-friendly. Convenient in that you can stick it in your pant or jacket pocket or purse and it still counts your steps as if you had it clipped to your pants as most other units require. It's not as slim as it appears on-screen but it's also not as bulky as having say your keys, wallet or compact mirror in your pocket.

The complaint I do have about the unit is it doesn't seem to track steps as accurately as the dial pedometer I was using. And it's not because I incorrectly calculated my "step settings" either, because I walked the 10-steps that's required to set up the unit a few times, and each measurement came out the same. The steps were off by a minimum of 200-300 steps each day, below the dial pedometer. I thought for sure when I purchased the unit that it would be more accurate than the dial since it is digital. I wore both units at the same time on multiple occasions and still, the same results.

The other issue I have with the unit is the clip. It's not as sturdy as other units out there and it doesn't lay flat against your hip, rather it protrudes out which poses issues with your attire. Personally, I don't like having a bulky mass protruding from under my clothing at work or while working out, and it's certainly not easy to disguise.

Overall, I'm dissatisfied with the purchase. I don't even use it anymore because it's inaccurate, so what's the point. I can't say that I'd recommend the unit but if you do decide to get it anyway, just keep in mind you'll have to add a few hundred steps to your daily count.

Customer Review: Almost perfect
Summary: 4 Stars

What can you expect from a pedometer, I mean you want it to count steps...right? But this little guy offers a little bit more metrics that are curious and maybe even useful. I like how it looks back in the memo mode to the prior days step count. The ability to set the device to the user's attributes to attempt a generic approach to calculating Kcal burn and even weight. It was interesting to note that I "lost" 1.5 grams after walking 682 steps, useful? Well maybe. But a feature I like is that you can set the time, which allows the unit to reset steps after midnight, no longer will I need to press a button each morning to start a fresh count. In even help me further with the days I forgot to reset the count, which happens more often than I am will to admit. I don't like the clip. It seems all the manufacturers of long clip averse to pedometers. The belt clip on this one is token at best, and is prone to popping off your belt or pocket way too easily with just the slightest prompting from seat belts, walking by furniture...etc. I usually can cure some of this by tucking in the face side of the unit inside my pocket, but if you are not wearing pockets, you are at the mercy of the wimpy clip. It would have got a 5 star rating, but for the clip.

So here's my summary:

GOOD
- Time feature
- Programmable user attributes
- Auto resetting of step each morning
- Large display for reading glasses challenged
- Easily detachable unit from clip cradle
- Works in your pocket or handbag
- Kcal and weight burn, albeit more of a guesstimate than accurate
- Multiple ways of carrying with attachments to promote the variety.

Bad
- Belt-clip size barely holds on and easily falls off when stressed
- Weight loss is not programmable to popular English Measuring Units, but fixed to metric or IU.
