Customer Reviews of Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket PedometerCustomer Review: Perfect Pedometer Summary: 5 Stars
The Omron Digital Pocket Pedometer (model HJ-112) measures the number of steps you take while wearing it, the number of aerobic steps you take, the number of minutes you do the aerobic steps, how many calories you've burned, and the distance you've walked while wearing it. It stores this information for seven days and if you wish you can look back at what you've done in previous days. The pedometer comes with a holder and clip to use on pants, belt, etc. - it can be used with or without the holder. It also comes with a strap that has a clip if you want to wear it that way.
I really like the Omron Digital Pocket Pedometer. It comes with everything you need to set it up (including a "screwdriver" and battery) and is extremely easy to set up. You have to measure your stride length, set the time, and your weight but this is all easy to do. The pedometer is a bit large, but very sturdy, and the display is very easy to read with large numbers. Because it is so sturdy it counts your steps very accurately - other pedometers I've had jingled about quite a bit and would measure "steps" at the slightest motion (even while sitting down) - not so with this pedometer. Another thing I love about it is its versatility - besides clipping it to your pants or belt you can place it in the upper front pocket of your shirt, the front pocket of your pants, or even attach it to a bag you are carrying. I've compared the pedometer's accuracy to other programs such as Wii's Walk It Out and it is very accurate. Finally, I love the fact that the pedometer not only counts normal footsteps and mileage but the aerobic footsteps and time - it is a major incentive to make sure I get my daily aerobic exercise done.
I highly recommend the Omron Digital Pocket Pedometer.
Customer Review: Not For My Kind of Walking/Dancing Summary: 2 Stars
Well, I do tend to go against the crowd sometimes.... I returned this pedometer last week and thank goodness Amazon refunded my money. It was not accurate for me at all.
I am sure this pedometer is accurate for those folks who (1) walk by themselves, (2) in a very clear area with no obstacles, (3) don't expect the pedometer to count steps taken while moving around in your house doing chores, (4) don't have a hyperactive dog or child, or (5) just want their steps counted if they go a certain speed and manage to get x number of steps in at a time. For that, I am sure it is the best, for me, not so much.
I had another pedometer (which fell in the commode and died) and I also used my CAR to measure the mileage I walk with my dog. She is a Jack Russell. She likes to stop, back up, investigate, move forward, etc. I walk her a mile in the morning and in the evening every day. This pedometer consistently undercounted my mileage. I also belly dance. With my other pedometer I was credited for housework, for my dog walking, and for my dance. With this one, not so much. I think my dog confused it, my backwards and forwards movement while vacuuming drove it nuts, and my dance was too much forward and back, up and down movement as well. So, no dice.
From what I am reading now, too late, this one has a 12-step auto-filter that counteracts counting "bounces in a pocket or car", but "causes the pedometer to undercount during daily movement by about 50% during tests on the waist" according to a third party testing site. And that was my exact experience.
Obviously the tests for this one involved straight line walking on a treadmill and, I am sorry, but that isn't realistic for me. More power to all you folks who love it, I shall have to go find me a differently designed model that counts ALL my steps.
Customer Review: Lacks accuracy in some situations Summary: 2 Stars
I was disappointed in this pedometer after reading all the good reviews. I bought it as hopefully a step-up from the one I have been using, an Accusplit Eagle 120XL. I've been satisfied with the Accusplit, but thought it might be nice to have something that could be placed in my pocket, was silent (no clicking), and would have distance and calorie features.
Unfortunately, after some experimentation, I've found that it is not nearly as accurate under most conditions as the less expensive Accusplit. If you're walking with very deliberate steps and at a steady, moderate pace, it should be pretty accurate. But if you are walking more slowly and stopping intermittently - still with definite steps, but less forceful, the kind of walking you might experience doing housework for instance, or walking from room to room - it doesn't seem to be too accurate. Wearing both the Omron and the Accusplit, I counted 500 steps as I moved around doing various chores. The Accusplit undercounted 5 steps. The Omron undercounted by 88!
Also, in jogging it loses a good many steps. It is more accurate if clipped on my belt than in my pocket when moving around a good bit, but is still lacking in accuracy either way. With the Omron and the Accusplit clipped to my belt, I jogged 209 steps. The Accusplit undercounted by 2, the Omron by 14.
Two other negatives - it seemed to be a little on the bulky side, especially with the clip attached; and there doesn't seem to be anyway to reset the step counter. It resets automatically at midnight, which is a nice feature, but I would like the option to also be able to reset manually depending on what I'm measuring.
I decided to return this one and stick with the good old mechanical Accusplit. I just need something that's more accurate at counting different kinds of walking.
Customer Review: Functions well but too bulky Summary: 3 Stars
This is the 2nd pedometer I've owned. I bought this Omron to replace Walk 4 Life (W4L) unit I used for the prior 7 months. I was happy with the W4L pedometer except that the clip broke twice on it. And, because the clip is part of the basic W4L housing, you can't just purchase another clip - the unit is basically ruined (unless you want to risk carrying it loose in your pocket and opening it with your thumbnail). Therefore, since this Omron pedometer fits inside a separate hard plastic clip housing, I decided to try it.
It functions well, accurately tracks your steps, and has a nice memory feature to review the past week. However, it is close to 3 times the size of the W4L and, therefore, too bulky to wear under nice clothes. I was able to clip the W4L to my bra under a relatively tight fitting top, and it was undetectable; the Omron looks like a growth is projecting out of your chest. This seems to defeat the purpose of tracking all your steps if you can't (or choose not to) wear it, let's say, on a night you go dancing. In addition, although there's much less chance of the clip breaking, it's uncomfortable against bare skin and seems to me to be much bulkier than necessary.
In spite of these design flaws, it's a nice little unit for wearing around the house or in a casual/workout environment. In general, I've found pedometers to be a fantastic way to motivate individuals to just stay active, which is much more effective than exercise alone. If the only way pedometer manufacturers can prevent the clips from breaking is to make them as Omron has, it's far better than W4L's clip design.
If Omron could reduce the size of the unit, the bulkiness of the clip, and have the unit sit low in the clip housing (instead of half of it sticking up over the top), I'd give it 5 stars.
Customer Review: One absolutely terrific pedometer by Omron! (Five full stars) Summary: 5 Stars
Since almost 2400 people have already reviewed this item my comments will of necessity be brief and to the point.
This is one absolutely terrific and very reliable as well as an extremely well made and very high quality pedometer!!!!!!
Having owned more than a dozen such ietms that were bought from several major manufacturers over the years, I can readily say that not only do I like this Omron HJ-112 the very best, but by the same token it has the least operating problems of any such device I have ever purchased (compared to other units that have had belt-clip breakage problems, screen degrading and screen scratching problems, latch closing problems, etc.). I really like its system of setting and resetting the display very very much and even its memory system is outstanding. The only item that apparently can't be recalled over the week-long maintenance of monitoring your daily walking record is the detailed time record spent on aerobic activities each day. All other items available every day during your workouts are also available for a full seven days with the press of the proper button and it even resets the record each day to zero automatically at midnight to boot! I also like how it attaches to your belt or shoe laces or sits in your pocket, etc. Would I buy it again, yes in a heartbeat and at twice the current asking price on Amazon.
I may even buy another one very soon (while thay are still available and still so inexpensive) so that when it does give up the ghost one day in the very distant future, I can still get such a reliable and quality-made measuring device to help me continue to monitor my overall happiness while walking in the deep woods and observing all the beauty of nature with my true and trusty doggie, the Beamer (Moonbeam formally)!
