Customer Reviews of Omron HJ-151 Hip Pedometer for Aerobic Activity

Customer Review: Excellent Pedometer
Summary: 5 Stars

I almost didn't get this pedometer based on the reviews saying it didn't clip well but I am glad I went ahead and got it!

First the pros:
- The clip isn't a belt clip or an eyeglass clip that you slip on or through, it has a hinge with a gripped clip to keep it sturdy in place. The first day I got it I went for a walk with my 1 year old in his stroller for a good 30 minutes. I went at a moderate pace and I never once felt the pedometer come lose or fall off.
- The pedometer also has a digital clock on it, I didn't realize that when I bought it. It just makes me love the pedometer that much more since I always forget to wear a wrist watch.
- Just as it advertises it keeps a weeks worth of steps which is awesome for folks like me who like to keep track of calories burnt (trying to lose weight) but sometime forget to mark the info down for a couple days.
- All the features as advertised are easy to use and virtually self explanatory. I only needed to read the manual to turn on the pedometer.
- All in all a great product for 15 dolar from amazon.com

The cons:
- I wish it was a little bigger, that's just my personal preference.
- The 'set' and 'reset|start up' buttons on the back of the pedometer are virtually identical so when you go to turn it on don't spend 5 minutes cursing thinking the battery is already bad because you are poking at the 'set' button like an idiot! ;) Just make sure you hold the back up to a light so you can clearly see the word 'set' or an arrow which points to the 'reset|start up' button. And also note both of these buttons are grey and indented so you will need a paper clip or something similar to tap them.

Customer Review: great little pedometer
Summary: 4 Stars

Works great and I like that the display isn't always on (the energy save mode saves on battery life and others can't see the steps I've done - all you have to do is touch a button and the screen comes back on). I also like the moderate step function as it can help me track when I'm being truly active.

I had the fancier Omron before (HJ720 which had downloading capabilities) and I never downloaded my data after the first couple weeks. So, it wasn't worth it to me to spend extra for a function I would not use. Also, that screen was always on and so the battery life was shorter. That one also had a TERRIBLE clip. The pedometer was always falling off. Eventually, it fell into water and died so I had to buy a new one (this one) and this one has a MUCH better clip on it. The HJ model fell off at least once a day and this one hasn't fallen off at all in the couple months I've had it.

The only reason it's a 4 star and not a 5 star is that when I start going through the different modes it has (total steps, moderate steps, miles, calories, etc - there is a 7 day history for each of these too), I inevitably get stuck going through 7 days of history for the steps/miles/calories because I start pushing one of the 2 buttons to get out of there. I wish there was a home button. But if you just leave it alone and it goes into its energy saver mode (after less than a minute), it goes back to the steps for today screen when you turn touch any button. I believe most pedometers have this issue though.

Since I'm a golfing grandmother and since I'm interested in keeping myself as healthy as possible i use the Omron Aerobic Pedometer to help me "count my steps." Many other pedometers have a metronome inside that moves every time YOU move thus elevating the number of steps actually taken. You can actually move them gently back and forth or side to side and the motion adds steps. What?? I learned this first hand after calling the manufacturer and they told me that this is the way their product was made and it did, in fact, exaggerate the number of steps actually taken. Well, I tossed those quickly. The Omron counts the "actual" steps taken, calculates how many calories you've burned, how many miles you've walked and it also has a regular style clock so if you check it when you start out and look at it when you finish you can tell how long it took you to go from point A to point B. the only negative is that I've lost one because it somehow came detached from my belt. Maybe the clamp style devise used to attach to the belt or pocket could be made so that it holds tighter. Most pedometers I've seen have the same type of clamp so it's not just the Omron. The Omron is really the most accurate pedometer that Ive used (and I've used three other manufacturers) and it has large numbers so is easy to read. Now if they could fix the "clamp issue" it would be even better!!

Customer Review: Plenty good enough, particularly if you tend to lose these
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my second Omron. The first one was twice the price, did more (even downloaded data into my computer) and the calculations were more extensive and the step-counting a bit more accurate, but it was bigger and a little heavier and I lost it within two months. Partly my fault--I was wearing it 24/18 and didn't use the "leash" it came with, even though it was strongly recommended. (A leash backs up the pedometer's clip-on gripper with a second, more secure clasp so the pedometer's harder to lose.)

However, the first one was already bulky enough with work clothes, so I skipped the leash...and lost the pedometer. That said, these small gizmos are famous for disappearing, whether you're wearing them or not. They just kinda eventually vanish, says everyone I've talked to since--slipping out of pockets, falling out of bags, getting left on a counter or forgotten in a hotel...

So I stuck with Omron (great rep) but picked a cheaper model. And I like it better in some ways--it's smaller, flatter, and more discreet. Under a work jacket, it's invisible. It still tracks plenty of info and it tested out pretty accurately against an established 1-mile distance (showed it as 1.04 miles). And I use the leash that came with the first one--this model does NOT come with one, so make sure you buy one separately!

Customer Review: Exactly what I wanted!
Summary: 5 Stars

Perfect pedometer, perfect for usage. After an initial glance through the setup instructions, I quickly put in height, weight, date, time, et al: Simple.

There are two buttons (three, if you count the tiny reset-with-paper-clip one) that makes it easy to navigate. One cycles through the previous day's walk, the other is a "mode" type button, it will cycle through k/cal, mile, etc. It also keeps a record of the past week of steps, a good idea to gauge how much you've walked. The clip is sturdy, the numbers are clear. There aren't any bells and whistles on this, like glow-in-the-dark, or perhaps the barometer and altitude of the place where you're walking, etc but I exaggerate. It does exactly what it promises, I'm super satisfied with it. One caveat:: I don't know how exactly accurate the count is, because there is a slight delay of like four steps before the pedometer starts regularly counting (but it catches up the count for the starting time), but I can't think of a case where you would need to know the exact absolute number of steps you've taken, we all just need an average or so....unless you've been attacked by a student of the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique (Kill Bill - Volume Two).
