Customer Reviews of Omron HJ-151 Hip Pedometer for Aerobic Activity

Customer Review: Almost 5 Stars
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this pedometer! It shows the number of steps you've taken, how many of those were at "moderate" speed, how long you walked at the moderate speed, how many calories you've burned and the distance you've walked that day. It stores the information for 7 days. It's lightweight, yet sturdy. It's easy to read. At the time I purchased the Omron HJ-151, I read the Amazon reviews. Several people mentioned that the clip wasn't strong enough and they lost their pedometer rather quickly. I ignored the warning because the clip seemed sturdy. I lost it the 3rd day I had it! That's the only thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars. I was really unhappy. I love the pedometer so much that I ordered a replacement the same day I lost the first one. This time I spent $1.95 + shipping, to buy a strap that secures the pedometer better than the clip it comes with. You don't need to "wear" the Omron HJ-151 attached to your waist. It works just as well sitting inside of your pocket. I use the strap for extra security. I highly recommend this product, but spend the extra $1.95 to get a strap to back up the clip.

Customer Review: Good accurate pedometer
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought two, one for my wife and one for me. Set up is easy, you just enter height, weight and set the clock. You don't have to enter your stride length. We have had the pedometers for about a month. They work well and seem to be way more accurate (on step count) than other pedometers that we have tried. There is a 4 second delay before it starts logging steps so I think it does a better job of recording true steps as opposed to every little jiggle you may make (it does count the steps you make in those first 4 seconds too). In addition to total steps it also logs moderate step count and time, defined as steps taken in the 3.0 to 6.0 METs as defined by the American College of Sports Medicine. The display is easy to read. The clip keeps the pedometer in place well. It has a seven day memory and automatically starts a new day of logging steps at midnight. We don't use the calorie and mileage trackers. Battery saver function is nice - it turns off the display after 5 minutes with no button being pressed (it does log steps even when the display is off).

Customer Review: More features than HJ-150, same price
Summary: 5 Stars

I lost an HJ-150 when it popped off my belt while I was wearing headphones. So first I went to the local sporting goods store and after looking at a another "line" of pedometer, bought a small electronic (rather than pendulum) one. It sucked. It had steps recorded on it that I know I hadn't taken. It goes in your pocket, but it has to be upright. I thought about velcroing it to my belt, but naw, too much trouble.

So I went to Amazon to replace the 150 and saw the 151 at the same price. It not only records steps, but "moderate" steps (i.e. more strenous) and makes guesses about the calories burned, and miles spanned. Yeah, it has one more button, but I can figure it out.

I took a leash off of an old camera and hooked it through the hole on the spring loaded clamp, looping the leash through my belt so it won't go missing. But you can buy a pack of such leashes for like $4.50 or just make one from some low-tech string.

Still not making 10,000 steps regularly, but at least I know it!

Customer Review: A Great Pedometer
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great pedometer. It is accurate in that it registers steps but it doesn't register other kinds of bumps and movements. For example some pedometers will register steps when you are riding in a car and going over bumps, or sitting in a chair tapping your foot. This one knows the difference. Its a nice thing to wear every day. It lets you pretty easily adjust your activitiy level to get in 10 to 12 thosand steps each day. Though I don't have much time for "exercise", this lets me work in a level of activity every day that has made me feel much fitter and trimmer than I was before I started using it. Maybe I'd be better off if I could spend a half hour each day in the gym, but that is not going to happen and it would be boring anyway. Walking more is good on several levels. You get the exercise and you are out seeing things and people, whether your taking a thirty minute walk around the neigborhood, or just taking an extra lap around the supermarket and parking your car a little farther a way.

Customer Review: Best I've seen--and a bargain!
Summary: 5 Stars

When I signed up to participate in a "count your steps" program, I searched at retail stores for a reasonably priced pedometer. All I found were ridiculously priced ones at specialty "running" shops or cheaply made over-priced ones at major retailers. My physician recommended Omron, and I decided to search at Amazon. I was favorably impressed with the look, the price and the reviews of the HJ-151--especially the price! It was half what I found it listed for at other sites. I like its compact size, the clip is sturdy (it fell off my waistband once or twice due to "operator error"), it was simple to program and has useful features like the 7 day memory, automatic set to zero at midnight, and moderate step count and mileage as well as standard step count. I'm glad I ordered 2 because my friend was thrilled with the one I gave her as a gift. I highly recommend this pedometer for the non-professional, average walker interested in improving daily step count and overall walk totals.
