Customer Reviews of Omron HJ-303 Pocket Pedometer

Customer Review: Works Great
Summary: 5 Stars

This pedometer works great for my casual use, while I can see where it may not meet everyone's specialized needs. I field tested this during a week at Disneyworld where it was fun to see how miles and calories were burned after a week of intense walking. 33 miles, go figure!

Positives: Slim design makes it a no-brainer for throwing in your pocket or bag so I'm more apt to take it with me; very transparent to just have on you. It works in any position, so again, transparent to use. I also don't care about lap timing, so if your only concern is about daily results, the automatic reset at 12am is nice. There is a "trip" feature if you want it, though. I was a little confused by one reviewer who said it "shuts off" but that's not entirely true--just the display times out. This thing works as long as you're moving, which is fine for me (save batteries), as I don't care to micromanage my hourly progress, personally. Just click a button to bring up the display again.

Cons: Again, for my purposes, not many, so check the other reviewers. Biggest pain was cutting through the blister packaging. I hate that stuff with a passion; dangerous with a knife or scissors to open. It would also be nice to have downloading of stats to software like Omron's high-end device, but it only takes a few seconds to put my daily results in a spreadsheet once every few days (7-day history is stored).

Bottom line: If you want a device that is accurate and small enough where you can just throw it in a pocket and forget about it, this is for you. The nice design and simple, versatile operation means I'm carrying it every day. High accuracy, nice usability, and low-hassle take-anywhere design make this perfect.

Customer Review: Nifty, but make sure you need a pedometer better than the HJ-112...
Summary: 4 Stars

The Omron HJ-303 GoSmart Tri-Axis Pocket Pedometer is similar to the Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer, but it "works in any position at any angle."

It must be how I hold it in my pocket, but it gives me the same information my HJ-112 records: steps walked, miles covered, calories burned, "aerobic steps" (moderate, continuous walking), and a seven day memory. So there may be someone whose HJ-112 doesn't read accurately. Is this because it is in a purse? In a fanny pack? Tied to a shoelace? I don't know. The HJ-303 is slimmer, but those step totals for both models are the same for me. That's really a good thing, because I'm very pleased with my HJ-112. I am equally pleased with the HJ-303. So... unless you NEED your pedometer to "work in any position at any angle," I'd suggest choosing the one that you can get for the best price.

Since I have both, I've calibrated my original HJ-112 for a running pace, and the HJ-303 for a walking pace. I'll run 3 miles, and the pedometer will record about 2, so having both gives me an accurate distance total.

Now if I can just get these darn things to record my bicycling pedal strokes as well..

Customer Review: Works well - except for determining 'moderate' pace.

This is the third pedometer I've owned. I had an older Radio Shack one that was just plain inaccurate, you could hear the pendulum moving back and forth as you walked. Then I bought the Omron 121 that is sold here, and it was fine, except that you had to keep it in line with your stride. I lost that one, no idea what happened to it. I bought this one so that I could throw it in any pocket and still have it work. I just leave it in one of my cargo pockets and forget about it. I've tried comparing the distance read to a handheld GPS that I have, and it's pretty close. (That's of course more dependent on the length of stride that you set.) Where I have a problem is it computing calories burned off of a moderate pace, which it measures separately. My GPS measures average MPH as well as time moving and time stopped, and I really can't figure out how this pedometer comes up with the calories burned, when compared to the GPS figures.

A good thing, I washed this thing in my pants pocket, forgot about it. Luckily I drip dried my pants, but I found the pedometer a couple of days later, not working, with the window all beaded up with moisture. I took it apart (only 6 easy screws), and let it sit for a week. Put it back together and it works like a champ.

Customer Review: Not for measuring multiple distances
Summary: 3 Stars

OK, first let me fully disclose I've never owned a pedometer before. I assumed they were all roughly the same.

I only purchased it as a backup for my hiking GPS so I can reasonably accurately measure distance if I need to fall back to a map and compass. Turns out it is poor for that purpose.

It is nicely constructed. Doesn't feel cheap and the belt clip device is secure. I picked this model, in part, because it is supposed to measure steps even if in a backpack and it appears to me to be capable of doing that.

The description says it monitors # steps, distance, calories, etc. What is missing is that the 'trip' function only resets a step count. Every thing else resets at the beginning of the next day. So if you want to measure the distance for the leg of a hike, you will have to multiply the steps by your stride. Not exactly something I want to be regularly doing while hiking.

If you just want to measure your daily stats it probably does well at that.

But, for me, this will end up in my box of useless gadgets and I now I know to specifically look for a 'hiking pedometer' will allow me to measure and reset distances walked.

Customer Review: Excellent and accurate for me!

I had another Omron pedometer in which the battery stopped working after a month. I took a chance and went with this one hoping that it's more elevated and expansive features would be worth the money. So far they have been!

I love the different functions and especially appreciate sleep mode. It has kept a very accurate count of my steps today (I do about the same everyday so a shift would be noticable) and it matched the elliptical machine too (which the other Omron didn't). I have not tried it in my purse but its been fine so far in a pocket, clipped to a pocket (almost vertical to the floor) and clipped on my waistband.

I appreciated it came with a holder AND a strap with clip. This makes me feel much more secure about my investment. It was easy to set up right away. I used a dull pencil to push the button and it worked fine - because as an urban apartment dweller I just don't have a forest of "thin blunt sticks" to use to start this thing!

Edited to add: I've had this on in the car several times and it does not add any steps. I'm not sure if it's because I live in a very urban environment but I did go over railroad tracks and through potholes.
