Customer Reviews of Omron HJ-720ITC Pocket Pedometer with Health Management SoftwareCustomer Review: 10,000 Steps a Day led to 22 pound weight release in 10 months! Summary: 5 Stars
Hi, my name is Joe Tufo. I'm blessed to live in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. Last Christmas I ballooned to 207 pounds the heaviest I had been in my life. I committed to a change in lifestyle and began walking every day.
I purchased a pedometer at a local sporting goods store. The name led me to believe that it was accurate. It was anything but reliable.
I went to my favorite website (other than my own) Amazon, and found my Omron GOsmart, "the pedometer with a brain" March 15th. In the past seven months I have released, not lost - it seems that every time that I'd lose weight that I'd want to find it again - 22 pounds, which is the most weight that I've dropped in my life. I turn 59 next month.
I was so impressed with the product that I'm writing this testimonial, which is something that I rarely do.
The difference maker in the case of this product is the fact that I have my own accountability partner with this device. You cannot cheat because it records every step regular or aerobic, it measures the time that you walk aerobically, it measures calories burned, distance, and doubles as a watch.
The USB cord allows you to upload the data to your PC-based computer and monitor graphs (I would prefer to upload to my MacBook but it doesn't work on a Mac). To realize that I've walked 2,230,000 steps and 868 miles in seven months (it was broken for a couple of weeks in September and was replaced under warranty) is amazing.
If you're really serious I exhort you to make this modest investment in your health. It's made a big difference in my life and I'm confident that it will make a big difference in yours as well.
May God bless you exceedingly abundantly and may you achieve your fitness and health goals.

Customer Review: My New Buddy Summary: 5 Stars
My doc said it might be helpful for me to consider a good pedometer so that I could help the old ticker. That's med-speak for get a good pedometer so the pig valve can continue working. Off to the races to find one. Do you have any idea how many of these little goodies are out there? A bunch! Regardless, I settled on this one based on the reviews in Amazon. I am so GLAD that I did. This device is on my body somewhere during all waking hours and has been so since October 2008. The doc said that an initial goal of 3,000 steps per day would be good and it is. I am going for 4,000 and plan to increase as my conditioning gets better.
The software works well. The device appears to be accurate but how does an old fool determine the level of accuracy? Even if it were not spot on accurate it does not matter. It at least gives me a clue to my level of conditioning and is a positive reinforcer that at least works for me. When you download the steps you can see how lazy you have been or not. Every hour of every day is shown since you started using it. If you want to see the cumulative steps, they are there. As someone said, "What? You'v only walked 200,000 steps so far? Poor."
This is my second Omron device. I bought a blood pressure machine (I know they have a fancy name but I can't recall how to spell it or say it.) in 1994 and it still works as it did on the day that I bought it. I had it checked by my cardiologist a couple of weeks ago and it was spot on to his measurement comparison. My plan is to buy the companion machine that goes with this device so that I can have an historical record of my pressures. If it were not for running a constant high blood pressure, in spite of medications, I would not consider the purchase. But...
Bottom Line: A little pricey but worth every penny. Buy a cheap one and you'll be buying another one soon. This is well worth the $30 or so dollars.
Customer Review: Neat Little Thing! Summary: 4 Stars
I actually didn't really see the point in pedometers in the past, but as I'm quickly becoming a Mehmetphile (Dr. Oz:), I decided to try this brand I saw featured on the Discovery Health series he co-hosts after looking at the extra features it packs. I'm acutally quite pleased with this little thing!
Pros:
*VERY easy setup out of the box
*Nicely sized display & clear (even upside down)
*The included software was easily installed and even easier to use for updating w/ new readings.
*Ability to set goals in the software was really appreciated (along w/ option(s) to download info)
*Fits well on the hip & can even be placed in a pocket or purse for discreetness (or if you just don't wanna run the risk of losing it)
*Auto-resets daily
*Length of time memory is kept
Cons:
*Software ver is Windows-only (no Mac love here:(
*It's supposed to go into a 'sleep' mode when no buttons are pressed for 5mins but I haven't seen this thing go down for a nap yet, which means that batt will likely be replaced sooner than the 6mo they claim
*It's small & light;may be easily lost if belt-clip fails
Overall, I'd probably give it a 4.5, only taking 1/2 away bcos it really ticks me off these days for product software to only include Windows versions when OS X can fit on an install disc too. If I'd been able to find this pedometer w/ a Mac OS X software version, I'd go that route for hooking this up to the laptop for quick uploads at night rather than wait the 'eternity' for my desktop to power up (which I don't use as much as the Powerbook). Also, the potential battery replacement issue since this thing's been on non-stop since I put the battery in. Of course, this type of battery is really cheap & easily found in most stores, so if neither of my 'cons' will bother you much at all, then consider this a 5-star rating :)
Customer Review: Have been wearing it for more than 6 months Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to replace a cheap pedometer that was given to us for a 10,000 Steps a Day Challenge. This specific model was recommended to me. It has been money well spent.
It is very accurate on the treadmills, stair steppers and ellipticals I have used it on. I usually wear it on my waist or at the top of my front pocket. I have worn it in my pocket a few times and it appears to count accurately in that as well.
I like the fact that it tracks not only aerobic steps but also aerobic minutes. This is helpful to see if you're meeting your 30 minutes a day of exercise, or how much you need to catch up. The nice thing is that most of my time on ellipticals counts towards aerobic minutes/steps as does the faster walking I do on treadmills.
I had to replace the leash after about 8 months of use because the plastic clip broke. Rather than buying one of theirs, I replaced it with a baby pacifier leash with a metal clip BooginHead Pacifier Holder, Blue Green Stripe. I wish I had done that sooner.
As for the software, that is what makes this worth the extra dollars compared to the Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer. Since I also own the Omron HEM-790IT Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor with Advanced Omron Health Management Software I can correlate my walking with my blood pressure. The nice thing too about the software is that you can EXPORT the data to a file for use in other systems or customized tracking worksheets. For geeks like me, this is pretty cool. I don't think I would still be wearing it, if it weren't for the data upload capability.
Customer Review: Buyer Beware - Data Transfer quits working Summary: 1 Stars
I have owned the Omron HJ-720ITC for several months. Liked it so much I bought my wife one. Suddenly, the data transfer quit working. I have tried downloading a newer version of the software, that did not fix the problem. I have written Omron and have yet to hear back from them. I will not pay the $10 shipping since it is nearly the value of the product. The memory is full, but the unit so far can still be used as a pedometer. I would not recomend this product since the feature you pay the extra price for is the ability to download your data.
Do not purchase this product.
From Nathan Price a Fix !
I had the same download problem, and after fiddling with the pedometer for a couple of hours I figured out the basis of the problem and was able to fix it. Being a software engineer, I figured that since it copies each day's data to memory once the clock clicks over to 12 AM, there must have been one day somewhere that had corrupt data. The download would always reach a certain percentage and then fail and as more days were saved, the percentage went up slowly. Unfortunately, Omron does not provide a mechanism to clear the internal memory inside the pedometer, which it really needs to do. The reset button on the back does NOT do this. The software on the computer has nothing to do with this problem. It is completely internal to the pedometer itself. In any case, to fix the problem, I just started setting the clock to 11:59 PM, waiting a minute and doing this quite a few times until the corrupt day's data was pushed out of memory. It holds 42 days, so eventually the data will be erased. Well, it fixed the problem! Of course, when the download finally worked the data was all screwed up. Then I just exported all the data to CSV, opened it up in a text editor and fixed the screwed up days, then re-imported the CSV file using the software.
