Customer Reviews of Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard Natural Whey, Natural Chocolate, 5 Pound

Customer Review: I think I'll stick with this "natural" protein.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have tried a number of protein powders, including the regular ON Gold Standard Whey and the thing I like about this is virtually no after taste compared to the others containing more artificial ingredients, but then i've always been turned off by artificial sweeteners like splenda, equal, etc. It is a little more bland than the others and not that enjoyable with water, but great with fat free milk and an occasional banana, or strawberries thrown in the blender. Speaking of which, it mixes well in a shaker bottle, or blender. I haven't tried just stirring it with a spoon yet. The bottom line is, while it is a little more expensive than some others, the natural aspect of it will keep me coming back for more when this runs out. I have only tried the chocolate, but I am anxious to try the vanilla - which by adding fresh, or frozen fruit can make a variety of flavors.

Customer Review: No artificial stuff!!
Summary: 4 Stars

Whey isolate is 90% pure protein by weight and provides 24g of protein per serving. I like this version since it contains no suger or artificial sweeteners. Stevia is a natural source of sweetness, but this product does not go overboard with it. I mix mine with fat free milk, a banana, frozen blueberries, a squirt of extra virgin olive oil and a tbsl of ground flax seed. Mixing this with milk is the best way to experience the full flavor potential of this powder. On the rare occasion I mix it with just water, the taste is pretty good and it goes into solution easily.

Note that on all containers I tried, the seal under the cover was not completely sealed, but the outside seal wasn't broken so I never worried. I think this was caused by shifting of the powder during transit.

Price is a bit high, but that is my only complaint.

Customer Review: best i've found
Summary: 5 Stars

We love this protein for helping us eat in the zone, balancing our protein with carbs and fat. This is the least expensive way to eat protein by 'the block', per unit - way less than cheese, meat, cottage cheese, tofu, etc.

My husband is a professional athlete, and this is the only protein supplement he now uses. His body fat has gone down 5% more since integrating protein into his diet in this way! (It's now down to 6%)

We couldn't afford to eat this way without this product!

The taste is great, especially the chocolate. We really appreciate that it is sweetened with stevia instead of a fake sugar, which can give you lower GI issues. :( Stevia is the only sweetener that's been used for a long time without any side effects or risks!

Thank you, Optimum Nutrition, for making this excellent product!!!

Customer Review: Great Product
Summary: 5 Stars

My last purchase of this brand of whey protein was the non-natural vanilla. I found it to be far too sweet and, well, sort of synthetic tasting, in an unwholesome way. The taste of the natural chocolate is far superior. It tastes more or less like chocolate milk (make sure to mix this with milk, btw. I haven't tried the chocolate kind with water, but it was a struggle to finish the vanilla when mixed with water), except slightly less sweet.

Taste aside, does this product help to build muscle? This is hard to say, as I've only been working out for about six weeks. However, about a month ago I purchased two twenty pound dumbbells. At first, I could barely do four reps of bicep curls. The other night, I was able to break twelve reps. Now, is this because I've been using this product? It's hard to say, but I'm sure it has helped.

Customer Review: Contains MSG
Summary: 3 Stars

I got this based on the claim that it was all natural. It is, kinda, about as natural as hydrolysis anyway. The "whey peptides" are hydrolyzed protein. When you hydrolyze protein containing glutamine you get MSG. No thanks. The online information may not mention that the protein is hydrolyzed but the product label does.

EDIT: Changed to 3 stars because the whey peptides are the 3rd ingredient and this product only contains 4 grams of glutamine per serving, only some of which would be from the whey peptides. MSG is a natural & necessary neurotransmitter which only fries brain cells in excessive amounts. Still I think I'll be mixing this powder with another to limit my exposure. People with MSG intolerance need 3 grams or more to notice it and AFAIK they're a good gauge of which restaurants to avoid.
