Customer Reviews of Organic Buckwheat Pillow - Queen Size (20" x 30")Customer Review: Been Using Buckwheat Pillows for Over 10 Years Summary: 5 Stars
In my experience, no other pillow can compare to a buckwheat pillow. These are heavy pillows that can be shaped perfectly for sleeping, and because of the buckwheat hulls, your skin can still breathe. They're the best.
I love my queen size pillow, the subject of this review. It's long and quite heavy - lots of buckwheat husks. And that's important because the pillow I'm replacing, a buckwheat pillow, served for many years but lost more than 50% of its volume over time. That's a lot of loss, probably an unusual degree of volume loss, but these pillows lose volume the more they're used. That's because the husks rub against each other and polish themselves. In the beginning the volume loss was good because the husks moved more freely and this allowed me to shape the pillow as I wanted. Eventually the pillow got too small in volume to provide optimal head support.
The queen size pillow that I got is so big that volume loss won't be a problem - maybe ever.
I saw on websites that one can maintain their buckwheat pillows. Just get some more buckwheat and add it in over time. Seems economical.
Another product that is similar is a coir mattress. Coir is a strong material fibers from coconuts. One advantage of using coir is that it's free of bacteria and fungal spores. Coir mattresses are very comfortable. Here's one for babies: Natural Mat Coco Stokke Sleepi Mattress.
Customer Review: Pleased with pillow Summary: 4 Stars
I have been using this pillow for nearly two months and have been quite pleased with it. I had been searching for a pillow that would provide support for my neck, shoulders and head. Unfortunately, the memory foam pillow I bought was too unyielding and I frequently woke up with neck and shoulder pain. The foam rubber pillow I have is getting old and no longer provides enough support.
This buckwheat pillow is "adjustable" in the sense of my being able to shift the filling around to create the right amount of support in the right areas for my use. It is a large, heavy and noisy pillow, making it somewhat awkward to arrange, but once it is positioned properly it's very comfortable.
Although it is described as queen-sized, it required a king-sized pillow protector and king-sized pillowcase. I left the filling in the original thick fabric it comes in, and simply placed it in the pillow protector and pillow case, possibly accounting for the need to use the king-sized protector and case. As others have commented, removing some of the filling can make it easier to arrange and shift the remaining filling around. I removed a gallon-sized zip-lock bag of the filling to make it more comfortable.
It took about two nights to adjust to the noise of the shifting hulls and to learning to position the filling for greatest comfort. I'd recommend this for those with neck/shoulder pain who have had trouble finding a comfortable pillow.
Customer Review: Way too big! Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the QUEEN version when the twin version turned out to be a travel size pillow (I do use it on top of hotel pillows). Anyway, when the pillow arrived, it was HUGE! The pillow had to have weighed 20 pounds. When I slept on it, my neck was in excruciating pain.
I contacted the seller and they told me to to remove some of the hulls. I removed some of the hulls and now the pillow is very lopsided and my neck is still not getting the support.
If you have a small to medium neck, I do not recommend the QUEEN size of this pillow; they put too many hulls in it.
I have just ordered a standard size from Target.com that I hope will offer me the support I need.
Note: I have been a buckwheat user for at least 10 years. My previous buckwheat pillow became gross due to an inability to wash.
Edited to add: (09/19/2008) I ordered the standard size from target.com (also on this site) and I have literally slept like a log for the last two nights. Yes, the pillow with the proper number of hulls sleeps like a bag of cement, but it molds to your neck and head so perfectly that your body will not want to move during the night. I awake in the exact same position I went to sleep in. I highly recommend that this manufacturer get the pillows adjusted to the proper size and hulls prior to shipment.
Customer Review: Takes a while to get used to. Summary: 5 Stars
Read a lot of reviews before purchasing this pillow. Other reviewers comment on how fast the shipping was, but took over a week to recieve. This aside I am growing to really like this pillow. It is unlike any other pillow I have owned previously. It feels like a one of those small bean bags that I used to play with in elementary school. It is not soft by any means, but very supportive. I can anticipate this pillow lasting a very long time without ever losing its' ability to support. I have had this pillow for over a month now and am starting to miss it when I go out of town for business. If you can give it some time to get used to, this is a very good pillow for those who go through pillows often. I have had shoulder surgery and had problems staying asleep and waking up not sore. I find this pillow is staying firm and helping with my restless sleep.
UPDATE...I just purchased a second pillow for my wife because she keeps taking mine. I bought her a new extra firm pillow a week ago, but this did not pacify her or thwart her attempts to steal my pillow...so I finally stopped whining about the price and ordered another one. I know these pillows will pay for themselves because I purchased 2-3 standard pillows every year, but these won't need to be replaced anytime soon.
Customer Review: The last pillow I will ever buy! Summary: 5 Stars
About every 2-3 months I have to buy a new pillow. I'm a side sleeper and I tend to put my arm under the pillow and craddle it against my head. I don't know if this or my slobber is causing the pillows to go flat in 2-3 months. I started using 2 pillows and the end result felt like I was sleeping on 2 copies of the Sunday newspaper. I was spending $100 a year for pillows so I figured why not try this buckwheat thingy.
First off, the pillow weighs 15 pounds, Im guessing. When I first laid my head on it, I thought it was too stiff and not very comfortable. After a few nights of using it and understanding how to "carve out" a spot for my head to rest, I have to say this pillow is the BEST pillow I have ever used.
My wife thought I wasted $60 (including s&h) and was an idiot. She also said the pillow is "too loud" since it does crinkle when you move it around. I have yet to wake up do to the "loudness" of my pillow and neither has she. However, she has quickly converted and whenever I goes to bed before me, I find her using my pillow.
Its only been a month, so I don't know about the longevity of the pillow, but so far, I am totally satisfied by the quality and comfort. Fits easily in to a queen pillow case and is A+ overall.
