EDITED TO ADD: I loved these vitamins when I took them. However, I have since learned that they *may* have failed in a test of dissolution/disintegration-- meaning they did not dissolve/disintegrate adequately when tested, which may translate into inadequate absorption of the vitamins when you swallow them! Which might explain why I didn't have any of the usual side effects I suffer with other vitamins -- constipation, icky burps, etc. I initially downgraded my review in light of this, but I've since reconsidered as it seems the report may have been unfounded. If I were certain of these test results, I'd downgrade it even further. But since I've only seen second-hand reports of one set of tests (at least one said it was a test by Consumerlabs, but I can't find reference to it on their site, which also requires payment for a full report), I'm hesitant to completely pan what otherwise seemed to be a good vitamin. If you're not absorbing it, however, it doesn't matter how good the pill is inside! I'm going to hope for now that reports of those tests were wrong, or that the test itself was somehow flawed, but I can't fully recommend these vitamins until I chase down the actual source of these second hand reports.
REVIEW AS PREVIOUSLY WRITTEN:
While I can't test the *actual* contents of these vitamins, the listed contents are exactly in line with what I want, and with basic prenatal vitamin recommendations.
So far, that's not different than most prenatal vitamins on the market.
Here's what sets these apart:
1) No nasty vitamin stink. These smell pleasant to me, and it's a very mild scent at that. They don't make me want to yak when I open the bottle, even with morning sickness full-on. They also do not taste bad (or really at all), going down -- vastly different than any other vitamin I've ever taken.
2) The dose is three pills -- now, at first this annoyed me, but here's why I like it: I simply take one with each main breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- which is easy for me even though I now eat about 5-6 small meals, because I still know which ones are the "standard" or "main" meal times. If I forget, I take the extra with dinner.
And if I do forget one pill, I know that I've gotten 2/3 of the dose anyway, which still provides more than adequate supplementation if I'm eating a good diet already. The main benefit of taking the dose in three separate pills is that I'll have better absorption and more even blood levels of the supplement during the day, which is important to me.
3) These have never EVER nauseated me. I do try to take them with food, as recommended with most multivitamins -- but other vitamins, even with food, have often nauseated me. And if I forget and take them a little distant from a meal? These have never, ever, made me sick to my stomach. A huge plus for me -- especially in an iron-containing supplement.
I recently ran out of these and had to take another brand -- big mistake! I received these for free as a sample, but am ordering more right now!
EDIT to those concerned about the calcium content, or lack thereof -- few (or no) prenatal multi-vitamins will ever be able to contain all the calcium a pregnant woman needs, as it simply takes up volume. So extra supplements, and/or good dietary intake of calcium (and vitamin D), is essential.
