Customer Reviews of Philips Norelco 8140XL SpeedXL Men's Shaver

Customer Review: Great shave with a light touch
Summary: 4 Stars

Those new XL shaving heads make a huge difference. The additional blades they added change the whole feel of the shave for the better. The shave is a more friendly shave. The heads almost feel soft against your face as you're shaving. For years I have used Afta pre-electric shave to cut down on irritation but I find with this razor it's no longer needed. It is very quiet and I must agree with another reviewer that it sounds like it's on low power. It's not. I thought that the new heads would shorten the amount of time I needed to shave but that wasn't true. It took just as long. Go figure. I would have given this razor 5 stars except after I got it I realized that it does not have a low battery indicator. That was an unwelcome surprise. The 8150XL or 8151XL does.
ADDITIONAL REVIEW AFTER TWO MONTHS OF USE: Other razors wind down slowly when running out of juice. Not this one, it goes from full speed ahead to dead in three seconds. When it does that, turn it off and then back on. It seems to have another 30 seconds of shaving when you do that. I don't know if this was an accidental or intentional design but that little trick is not in the manual.

Customer Review: Smoooth Shavin'
Summary: 5 Stars

"UPDATE after a few weeks of ownership: Still love the smooth shave. Suprised at the very light pressure that is required to get such a smooth shave. Also works well on a two-day growth. Norelco is the state-of-the-art in electric shaving."

Original review:

I first bought a Braun SynchroPro 7505, then the 8140XL. The Norelco 8140XL shaves closer. The Braun 7505 is well made, feels good in the hand, is made in Germany, is noisier, shaves evenly, but never close enough.

The Norelco 8140XL feels light, slightly flimsy feeling, but is much quieter than the Braun. It is made in Holland. The ON/OFF switch is right where I want to put my thumb while gripping--poorly located switch. Initial charge 4 hrs, 1 hr charge time after that. Battery life is good. Can be used with cord. SHAVE: smoooooth, better than an older Norelco 885 model that I used for years. Requires only light to moderate pressure on face and actually shaves me faster than the older Norelco or the Braun. Replacement heads HQ9 are easy to find (at Amazon and other on-line and retail stores). Overall, recommended, this is the one I use now.

Customer Review: Pretty good, but not great...
Summary: 4 Stars

I researched and researched and then I researched some more and eventually selected the 8140. While I do like the unit, it does not shave as close as a blade. It is quicker then shaving with a blade, easier, there's no mess, etc. The unit is also exceptionally quiet compared to other electric razors I've used in the past. It's lighter then I would have expected. The new head design is also more advanced then Norelco's I've used in the past and it does a better job in tough spots like your chin. I have no intentions of returning the unit and I will continue to use it happily, but it does not shave as close as a blade. The good thing is that when you come home from work with that 5-o'clock shadow, you can spend less then 60 seconds running it over your face to get a quick clean up. Lastly, it's a nice looking shaver and having the ability to clean it under the tap is great. I do recommend this product.

UPDATE JANUARY 2009 - I've been using this razor at least 5 times per week since originally posting this write up. A charge still lasts a good two weeks. I've replaced the blades once. I'm still very happy with this unit.

Customer Review: not as good as my older norelco 6826xl
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought a braun syncro, after I had my older Norelco Quadra for a few years. While the Braun was good, I still preffered the rotary shave that my Norelco gave me.

I let 2 more years go by and decided to get another Norelco, I still have my old one but I dropped it and cracked the head where it latches, it's still useable though.

Anyway, This Speed XL does not feel as solidly as my older Norelco and it is not as powerful. This gives me a very uncomfortable shave as it tends to pull my whiskers, it hurts a little.

The Braun syncro is a better razor than this one.

Although Norelco boasts to have a newer and better razor every year, they really aren't any better than the older models, and in my case it's not even as good as the older ones.

I can no longer stay faithful to one brand. I have read some very good reviews on some of Remington's foil shavers and even Panasonic, so maybe in two more years I will try one of them.
You just don't know which razor is best until you try them all... Unfortunately they are too expensive to try them all.

Customer Review: Not a razor, a hair puller
Summary: 2 Stars

I'll preface this review by saying I've used an electric razor ever since I started shaving. In fact a majority of my past razors have been Norelco rotaries. I had been pretty satisfied in the past; I've never had a super-smooth cut removing all prickles but never been disappointed really. That is, at least, until now.

I've used the 8140XL for about 2 months now. If I shave every day, this razor does okay, but not fantastic (definitely not as close a cut as all of my past electrics). The trouble comes when, for whatever reason, I have to shave day-or-two-old stubble. This razor, as others have pointed out, would much rather rip out two-day-long hairs than cut them. Suffice to say, after letting my stubble grow out a day or so, I now fear this razor and end up deciding to put off shaving for another day or so to give myself one more day, oh just one more day, without the pain one can only describe as a close-to-Gitmo experience.

To sum it all up, unless you're some sort of sadist searching for a replacement to your self-flagellation, stay away from this razor.
