Customer Reviews of Philips Norelco 8140XL SpeedXL Men's ShaverCustomer Review: An all around great razor Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this razor to replace an older Norelco I had. After reading the reviews on here this one sounded like what I wanted and was at a price I was willing to pay. I was a bit surprised by it as it is much quieter than my old one, which is nice early in the morning when I'm trying to be as quiet as I can so I don't disturb my wife. The razor is a bit deceiving in that it doesn't seem like it's putting out much power, but it cuts right through my whiskers with ease. I find it a bit tougher though cutting under my nose than I did with my old one, but I think as I become more comfortable with this one that will change. It, like my old one, is extremely easy to clean which is another big plus for me early in the morning. Overall, the razor isn't as heavy as my old one, so it's easier to handle. The three independent heads make it nice shaving on the chin as I'm getting closer shaves now than I did with the old one that didn't have the independent heads. I would definitely recommend this razor for those looking for a good shave at a price that won't take your breath away.
Customer Review: Very satisfactory shave; Not a substantial improvement over 2 blade models Summary: 4 Stars
This is my 2nd Norelco and I am satisfied with it. My previous Norelco was a 2 row blade system which I had bought in 2001 used for 6 years. There was nothing wrong with my old shaver, but I thought this shaver would be a substantial improvement over the 2 blade system.
The good news is that this shaver is overall better than the older 2 blade system. The most significant improvement is the battery life. This shaver uses Lithium Ion batteries which lasts me about 2 months with a single charge (my old shaver lasted about 3 weeks). When you travel, chances are you will not need the recharger.
The bad news is that the shave, which the 2 blade system did beautifully, is not substantially improved over the 2 blade system. This is not necessarily bad since the 2 blade system was a very good shaver.
If you have the older 2 blade Norelco, you may want to keep it and change the blade once every two years. If you are looking for a new electric shaver, this shaver will give you a beautiful shave in a short duration with a very long battery life.
Customer Review: What mood are you in? Summary: 4 Stars
Not as close as a blade, but usually it's less trouble to just run this thing over my face than do the whole set-up for a blade shave. If I've been shaving every day, a touch up takes no time at all, BUT, if I go an extra day, the time it takes to actually get a clean shave seems like forever, going over the same areas over and over again. After all is said and done, this my choice among electrics. My solution to the weaknesses of an electric shaver: 1/When casual shave is all that's needed, and I've shaved a day before: Electric only. 2/When I've shaved the day before, but want to be soft as a baby: Blade only. 3/When I've let myself go for two or more days: Twice-over with electric, to cut down on times the blade runs over the skin , then finish with the blade. The dual technology takes less time than either alone: The set up on electric cutting down on how much hair gets stuck later in the blade, and the blade often finishing a section with only one pass, rare on electric. I also believe that alternating keeps the skin from getting too sensitive to either tool.
Customer Review: Good features for medium duty requirements, but 7xxx series might be a better value Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned this for a year and am quite pleased with it. But, if I were to buy again, I would probably go with the lower-cost 7xxx series. There are a few more features on the 8140XL -- the charging stand and full charge LED -- but basically Norelco makes a decent electric shaver. Upsides:
1) One significant benefit is the LONG time before the battery needs to be recharged -- perhaps a combination of using a good battery and low power requirements. I have taken it on a week-long business trip without bringing the charger.
Downsides:
1) $45 for a set of replacement blades is high. However, after a year, the original blade set is still adequate.
2) A "needs charging" LED would be useful.
Note that my shaver gets relatively light usage -- my beard is not overly thick, and I use a Gillette blade after not shaving over the weekend -- a blade gives a much quicker and better shave on a couple days' growth. This Norelco gets used Monday-Friday. Overall, I'm happy with this shaver and am glad to see Norelco back with a quality product.
Customer Review: The Best Shaver I have ever owned Summary: 5 Stars
I am 65 years old and have owned several electric shavers throughout my life but this is by far the best ever. I've had Schick's and Braun's and they have always given me a burn and I was not satisfied with the closeness of the shave. I have owned several older Norelco's, and with the floating heads they were comfortable, but still electric shaving wasn't close enough especially for formal outing, but I would use it for work. Over the years my batteries became weak so I decided to upgrade to the 8140xl. What a difference! Light as a feather, great improvement in the floating heads, comfortable enough to make shaving a delight, and a much closer shave. The water cleaning (though I still Prefer the old fashion way & clean with a brush), charging stand, looks and feel etc. are all additional perks, but the real quality in this machine is the close shave and comfort of use. Hats off to you Philips, I have no idea of how you can improve upon this shaver. Also, have been using it now for almost two weeks on a single charge and still going. Fantastic!!
