Customer Reviews of Philips Norelco HQ9 SpeedXL Replacement Heads

Customer Review: Like a new shaver!
Summary: 5 Stars

Philips Norelco HQ9 SpeedXL Replacement Heads
I've been using Norelco rotary electric shavers all my life and this is the first time I've ever purchased replacement heads. What a surprise to find out it's just like getting a brand new shaver! My old Norelco was not performing as well as it used to and I wondered if it was time to upgrade to something "better" - whatever that might be. I decided just to save some bucks and try replacing the heads (just like they advise). Suddenly, all the little complaints I had about the performance of my old Norelco disappeared. I had a new shaver with the top notch performance I used to get. Try replacing the heads before you fork out big bucks for all the fancy, non-esssential "features" they now build into high priced electric shavers.

Customer Review: Replacement heads
Summary: 5 Stars

I attempted to review this item earlier, but couldn't find the exact price I paid. I guess I paid about a buck or so, more than I needed. No problem. I wasn't sure I had the correct heads because the writing on the back of my shaver was soooo small for these old eyes. I got the right heads and I figure I've saved $70 or so in place of buying a new razor of this quality, while discounted at Costco. Be sure and LOOK CAREFULLY as you disassemble the heads. It takes a bit of doing to get the new ones in place properly. I figure my purchase was well worth the effort. I hadn't realized how dull the two year old heads had become. They may have been older, because I don't recall how long I have had this razor. Amazon has been very good for my buying needs. I live in a very car congested area and it is a pleasure to buy on line with quick service.

Customer Review: Should be called Slow-XL
Summary: 2 Stars

Somehow Norelco actually made the HQ9 SpeedXL heads worse than the old lift-and-Cut heads. To make it look like the heads will produce a faster shave, they reduced the area of the outer ring to make room for two additional cutter rings inside the outer ring.

The problem? The inner rings have a slower surface speed than the old, larger area, outer ring. So you actually have a smaller high speed cutter area while the inner rings end up pulling your beard hairs when you try to shave as fast as your old Lift-and-Cut shaver.

Why can't you buy the old lift-and-cut heads to fit you new Smart-Touch shaver? Like all Norelco rotary rasors, each model uses a slightly different drive pin to make you buy the newer, more expensive, heads. Philips knows how to make their old products obselete so you will buy the new "better" stuff.

Customer Review: Long lasting, good value
Summary: 5 Stars

I will preface by saying that use an electric razor because I have to, not because I like them. I believe that a real razor delivers a closer and better shave. However, with that disclosed, these replacement heads are a good quality product. I changed out my first set at six months, but I'm still on my second set nearly one year since. I find that if I wash off the cutting heads after each shave I get a faster and better shave than if I do it less frequently (as the manufacturer suggests). Also, I tried oiling the cutting heads as the manufacturer suggests, and never did it again. It just creates a mess and causes the hair to stick and clump. I may have shortened their life, but I doubt it. In any case paying $25-$30 once a year is better than spending that much every three months or so for Mach 3 heads.

Customer Review: Excellent, exactly as the original, but pricey.

I like the fact that I can replace the blades, the replacement is exactly like the original one it came with; but it could be less expensive. One thing you might want to conseder to prolong the life of your blades is to purchase the Norelco liquid wash for the blades, it is inexpensive and does a good job in cleaning the blades; they feel fresh once cleaned. You can get the most out of the liquid wash by mixing the liquid with filtered water in the container that you are going to use for your razor. I have the Norelco cleaning machine, but if you dont have one you can use any container, mix the water with the wash in the container, then dip your razor machine on into the container several times until it is thourally clean. Then rinse you razor with freash water to get the soap out.
