Customer Reviews of Philips Norelco T980 Turbo Vacuum TrimmerCustomer Review: Overall a great trimmer with 1 exception Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using a Norelco beard trimmer for years. I bought the first T100 which used 2 AA batteries. I've seen the improvements over the years and they have definitely added to how well the products functioned. Right off the bat I'll tell you my exception. This beard trimmer was made in China. That might not matter at all to some and you are entitled to your opinion. But it matters to me and I was slightly disappointed to see that they are not being made in Austria anymore.
Other than that, I am impressed with this trimmer. The turbo vacuum system works great. I have not had to clean my bathroom sink even once. The self-sharpening blades no longer need to be lubricated with oil. Ever though this unit is slightly bigger than my last one (T990)it is not more awkward in my hands. Even the Accu Control System's flexing guide comb is easier to clean than the last one.
I do have to recharge the battery after 2 or 3 uses but it does have a quick charge feature that takes about 1 hour. So I can't really complain about that.
I have not noticed any problems with actually trimming my beard. The 9 lockable length settings have not slipped for me as others have reported (I am currently using a number 4). I have not had any problems with trimming under my nose but I have been used to using a Norelco.
Some trimmers are still made in the USA like Wahl but some of the features in this Norelco I have not found in other trimmers like the vacuum trimmer feature. If this Norelco was still made in Austria I would have given it a 5 star rating. But other than that it is a good beard trimmer and I am enjoying using it.
Customer Review: Sometimes progress sucks Summary: 2 Stars
The Norelco T-980 price was not much more than the cost of replacing the battery in my 10-year old Norelco Maverick T-3000 and I was excited about the addition of a vacuum feature. Be careful what you wish for! The vacuum does its job and sink cleanup is definitely faster. But the vacuum feature tends to obscure your view of the blade edge making it much trickier to aim the thing at your beard's edge while looking in the mirror. The vacuum must be emptied by using thumb pleasure to disengage one side of a rather flimsy, curved compartment cover that swings open on a hinge that looks so weak that I'm afraid it's just a matter of time before I accidentally break either the hinge or snap the cover in half. Equally delicate-feeling are the two sliding, plastic prongs used to hold the primary blade in place. Yet it must be removed each time one wants to use the smaller, more accurate trimming blade. And of course the trimming blade uses similar prongs to hold it in place. My older T-3000 had a self-contained trimming blade that slid forward with a simple thumb push whenever needed and then retracted just as easily. The T-980 is larger around and heavier than the older unit... enough so that I really miss the sense of control and precision I was used to. In short, the T-980 feels clumsier, less maneuverable, and less accurate. It takes longer to complete the job due to the hassle of changing the regular blade and the trimming blade. And it really tries my patience having to be so careful not to beak one of those delicate, sliding, plastic prongs or the vacuum-compartment cover. I'm really tempted to pay the $30 it will cost to restore my old T-3000.
Customer Review: Scares the cat, but Over all, pretty impressed Summary: 5 Stars
I am a firm believer in facial hair, but often try to avoid that shaggy look. The cat mistakes my face and starts nuzzling a little too enthusiastically.
I have trimmed with scissors, rasors, the old cip on guard trimmers and the grandfather of this trimmer which just recently died after 7 years of service (not bad Norelco!). Like its grandfather, the click adjustable guard is the single best reason to buy one of these trimmers.
It does struggle a little bit with longer bushy hairs (as most do), but works like a champ when keeping previously trimmed ones in check. Clean up is fairly easy, plus this one looks really cool.
The only thing I am not inlove with is, and that it has a super rechargeable battery which will have to be removed one day and recycled appropriately. Replacement batteries and recycling can be a challenge, and I'd almost rather just have a corded mode. Otherwise I totally love it.
The vacuum and turbo vacuum featured on this model are an interesting new rendition, and they do a fair job capturing most (not all) of the shavings. Admittedly though I have only used the turbo vacuum on my person as I cant imagine a situation when you'd want less suckage... except to make this more stealthy when you have a few beers and decide its time to shave the cat... having done so, the cat is now afeard of both the trimmer and any other vacuum noises. Even a long drag though a straw now makes Mitsy Boots nervous. My sink drain and my wife are quite grateful with the vacuum, the cat not so much.
Customer Review: Shavetastic Summary: 5 Stars
Purhased the shaver about 1 month ago. Owned a previous model that worked OK but had limitations that, for the most part have been resolved in this model.
I have a gote and need to trim my mustache from my upper lip regularly.
Pros:
Long battery life. I've had the unit for about a month and not had to recharge it yet.
Trimmer attachment is easy to install so I no longer have to bring 2 separate trimmers with me when I travel for business.
It looks cool. Not that looks of the shaver are important but it doesn't hurt.
Ergonomics. Easy to hold and use. Buttons placed in easy to use positions.
Turbo adjustment. Haven't had the need yet but it wil;l come in handy I guess for longer hair trimming.
Vacuum to suck up clippings. What can I say. Excellent. Not a gimmick.
Cons:
I wish they offerred a nose hair trimming attachment as well.
It is a slight drag to change heads. I wish they had a slide button to push up the thinner blade and would have sacrificed the vacuum for the thinner trimmer as it is used (in my case) for trimming hair that isn't long to begin with.
The hair collection compartment is OK. I clean if after every use but my old one had a cup that removed so I could empty it and this one has a door that opens so you have to hold the unit over the garbage can to empty and it is a drag as I blow out remaining hair instead of using the supplied brush so there is a greater chance the clippings will get on the floor as it is hard to blow it out and aim the refuse.
Customer Review: Hey! It Cuts hair! Summary: 4 Stars
This purchase was to replace a Wahl trimmer that died suddenly after a couple of years. It had done a good job but the feature I liked best about it was the built in vacuum. Stopped my wife from complaining about a trail of hair on the sink.
After a quick look thru the internet I soon discovered this vacuum feature was a rarity. Then I found the NorelcoT980 Turbo here on Amazon. It has the vacuum and a extra Turbo function that your first time you'll think it's going to pull off all the hair. Well it doesn't but the motor does get louder in turbo and I'm sure it also eats up more battery power. It's a well made piece of machinery that feels good in your hand. The heigh adjustment click in nicely. The cover over the blades ride nicely over your face but this is something you'll have to use the included cleaning brush to wipe out hair that will stick in it's nicks and crannies.
There is a second blade that is used for finer detailing like around your mouth. It works well and enables you to keep the hair out of your mouth. Funny thing about the attachments. The first few times you change them or remove the hair catcher they seem to be difficult to remove. But soon they pop off easily. Suppose it's just a matter of learning were to pull.
I do wish it came with a stand for the razor. It comes with a pouch that you can store a everything including the charger, but somehow I get the feeling Norelco though us guys with beards travel a lot. I don't and would have like a place to sit the T980 where I can grab it for a quick trim.
