Here are two things Phillips will not tell you about their Sonicare toothbrushes and heads.
1) The collar that holds the toothbrush to the handle will disintegrate in a couple of months. That's what prompted this review, because they would not replace mine after it fell apart two weeks after purchasing a replacement.
They manufacturer these things to disintegrate so you will continue to buy replacements - planned obsolescence. However, I suspect their China supplier is skimping on the plastic specifications and they fall apart in weeks instead of months. (Do you think China would really do that?)
2) UNPLUG your base until you need to charge the toothbrush. If you charge it up overnight, then unplug the base, the toothbrush will work for four brushings per day for about a month. Then, when it signals or stops, plug the base in to charge it.
This method will allow your toothbrush to work for five years or longer. If you keep the base plugged in all the time, these NiCad batteries develop memory and will stop functioning after 18 to 24 months.
A bonus, if you travel a lot as I do, you don't have to pack the charger. Just make sure it's topped off and you're good for a month's vacation.

I just got a replacement for my similar model Sonicare. After about 10 years of use, the off/on switch wore out. I gave this one a five star rating based on the lifespan of my old one. The brush has done an excellent job for me. I have a terrible tartar build up problem. Before I got my Sonicare, I had to get my teeth cleaned by a hygienist every 3-4 months. Since I got one and started using it with Rembrandt toothpaste, my visits have dropped to twice a year with one half the time in the dentist chair.
Use is much easier if you put a little toothpaste on your fingetip and rub it on your front teeth. Then you can start the toothbrush before you put it in your mouth without consequence. This is easier for kids, too. I actually turn mine on, and hold it under a stream of water low in my sink before I put it in my mouth. It softens the bristles a bit. I leave the brush running, move it away from the water, give it a couple seconds for the drops to shake off, and then put it in m mouth. I leave it running the entire time. The brush does have to be off before you take it out of your mouth, of coure. Finally, just a little dab of toothpaste does the job. Saving money on toothpaste cuts the bite of the brush cost.

I had been using one of those $5 battery toothbrushes for years. I always brushed 2 min in fact I had a route I walked my house so as to brush long enough turns out I was brushing 3 min. LOL Now with this toothbrush it times the 2 min for me, I still walk. My teeth feel so clean just like I came from the dentist. One big thing I noticed Is I floss after brushing and there would always be some little somthing that the floss caught. Now there is NOTHING from the floss. AMAZING.
I highly recommend this brush. It was a great value and I wish I had gotten it sooner. I'm a fanatic about keeping clean teeth and at my last checkup didn't even have to have a cleaning as there was no plaque or tartar to clean. I cannot wait to see what my dentist says this time.
My only con to the product is the packaging. If you have bad arthritis in your hands you may have trouble getting the package open. Inside the box the unit is sealed in that hard molded plastic. very hard to cut open and then the sharp plastic cut my hand. traditional cardboard dividers would have done just as well. I just mention this as if you are alone with no one to help you it can be difficult.

I compare using this toothbrush with just having my teeth cleaned by a dentist. I originally bought a Sonicare for my husband and it worked so well we bought the extra heads and we share the same base. Now he is traveling so much that I want my own base. It is several years old and still brushing very well, neither of us having any complaints. In fact, we were both so happy with the results, that I bought my father one as well. The next time my dad went for his usual cleaning, the dentist was amazed at how clean and nice looking his teeth were. As a daily coffee drinker, my dad would have bad coffee stains on the inside of the teeth, that the dentist would have to work at to remove. Since he got the Sonicare, cleanings are much more pleasant and less work. For smokers, the Sonicare will remove stains if you use it on a regular basis. It's truly amazing what this brush can do and it's worth the money. I don't think it matters which particular model of the Sonicare you get. Sure it sucks that the battery can't be replaced but if it lasts you for approx. 4 years, isn't that worth it? Even though there are more advanced power toothbrushes out there, my family has had this model since it first came out several years ago. Our dentist recommended it when my husband had problems with his gums. We all received better dental checkups on our next visit. The product has a two-minute timer that lets you know every 30 seconds so you can switch to another area of the mouth. This makes sure you are brushing for at least two full minutes. The brushes come in a set of two each with a unique color band. You can purchase another set of two brushes in two different colors so a family of four could each have their own color to avoid mixup. The brushes easily screw on and off the unit and can be placed in a stand until the next use. The main unit comes with a charger/stand. The entire product is compact and can easily be packed for travel. We recently purchased another Sonicare - same model - when ours died because we had just purchased replacement brushes. We would recommend the Sonicare to anyone considering a power toothbrush.
