Customer Reviews of Philips Sonicare FlexCare Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush with SanitizerCustomer Review: Mixed Review, But Definately Worth Keeping... Summary: 4 Stars
Well, I'll ignore the fact that I found the two pack with an extra handle at Costco for $[...] more than I paid for this just three weeks after I got it for the purposes of this review, that has really pissed me off...
That aside, I had mixed feelings about this toothbrush. I have used the disposable electric toothbrushes in the past, but nothing close to this. So for anyone thinking of this as their first electric toothbrush, give this one a try for a few weeks. I found out that they have a 30 day money back deal direct from the manufacturer (check to make sure it still applies before buying), so I figured I had nothing to loose. I arrived at this one after at least 20 hours of reading reviews online and comparing models, so I'm positive that I got the best one on the market.
My first brush: As I held the device in my hand and the toothpaste slid off (I guess I should have listened to the person who said to turn it on only once it is touching your teeth), I couldn't help but wonder if this device could take tar off a roof with how fast it vibrates. And indeed, it took what was basically tar off my teeth, but it made my teeth, gums and tounge numb when I was finished. I brushed for about 60 seconds (using a clock with a second hand to make sure I did 15 seconds in each quarter of my mouth) just to be sure I was following the recommended useage for this first time. I almost returned it right then and there because of how numb my mouth became. To understand why I didn't, you'll have to know a little about my mouth: My dentist says that I have a plaque problem. In fact, over the years (because I moved from place to place) I can remember four different dentists telling me that I should be brushing more and flossing more and coming more often. I go once a year, I brush twice a day, and I floss every few days. I have never walked away from a dental cleaning (even a "full mouth debridement" that I had a few years back which took an hour) without being able to still feel ridges at the edge of my teeth where there was still plaque built up (that's right folks, I can feel my plaque with my tounge because it is so hardened on). Ok, back to my story. As I put the toothbrush head in the UV sanitizer and replaced the handle on the counter, I noticed that I couldn't feel any plaque! In one minute this has done more than any toothbrush I've ever owned, more than flossing, more than a full hour of horrible deep cleaning by a dental hygenist, more than four different dentists (and perhaps more when I was younger) could do. This took all of my plaque away! I have a cleaning in a few weeks, I'll try to remember to update this after the cleaning to tell you what my dentist has to say.
So why four stars? Well, for two weeks my mouth felt numb after each use, which would have dropped my rating to two stars when balanced with the excellent results. But after two weeks that started to fade and now I only feel a little tingle. So I bumped it up to four stars because if you stick with it you'll get used to it and not feel it as much.
What other features does it have? Well, the UV sanitizer was a great deal for me because I have always used one with my regular toothbrushes and I would have had to get one to fit whatever brush I got. The sanitizer works great and I give it five stars without complaint. The only thing I can't comment on is its longevity, since I have had the cheaper ones break a lot, but hopefully this one is made well and will last long.
Then there is the charging base. This uses a new technology that I read about last year after CES which send electricity to the device just from being within less than an inch of the base top. Try it, hover above and it will charge! This is not only cool, it also means no metal to corrode in your bathroom. The travel charger works the same, but my complaint there is that a lack of weight will cause you to need to position the cord carefully when putting the travel charger down or you wont be able to use it. Also, the travel case doesn't hold the charger. However, for short trips I'm going to bring a cheap disposable electric in a travel sanitizer so I don't risk my expensive toothbrush so that isn't a problem for me.
The "deluxe" travel case is a joke, being that it is made from canvas and very cheap, I give it two stars. However, I didn't expect much so I wasn't dissapointed.
The brush head is smaller than I am use to. This was annoying at first, but I got used to it. If it was larger, it would be harder to fit into smaller curves around the gumline. Since it does the brushing for me (I just move it slowly back and forth, less than 50 strokes does my whole mouth), this isn't a problem at all now. The pro brush head is also designed well and it cleans great. I will continue to use that head.
Now for the two complaints that I have aside from my initial reaction of numbness: First, the battery is one of those that you have to use up before you charge. That isn't a problem, except that they should have put a charge button on the charger because I have to store it next to the charger instead of on it when I don't want it to charge. The second complaint is that the programs (which I haven't figured out yet) clear whenever you stop using it or if you don't turn it on for three seconds. This means that you have to find your setting, move the brush quickly to your mouth, and turn it on, all within 3 seconds. And the next time you use it, the brush has reset to its default. Apparently they put money into designing these program modes but they don't want you to use them. I just ignore them because of this.
All in all, everyone needs this toothbrush! I hope that dentists start to recommend it and readers start to buy it. I can't say enough about it! Of course, there are major flaws and if another brand comes out with something better I will be quick to switch, so they really need to put in some more R&D to improve these few flaws before someone else comes out with a product that does...
