Customer Reviews of Philips Sonicare HX3351/02 Xtreme Battery Operated Toothbrush

Customer Review: Cleans great; poor design
Summary: 2 Stars

Although I am definitely on the 'Sonicare' bandwagon in so far as this product's ability to clean my teeth--it does a great job--this model brush is made quite poorly.

The battery compartment (the e3000 uses 'AA' batteries) on mine, regardless of it having an o-ring on the door, seems to be continually wet inside, with the negative (-) terminal on one of the AA-cells rusting after only two weeks use. Philips acknowledges this is a problem but offers no solution.

Also, there are many small crevices in/around the nameplate on the side, and a large gap under the nut for the brush-head that accumulates 'gook' on a daily basis. Philips advises that this is probably 'mold' and the brush should be 'disassembled and air-dried' after every use. It takes longer to do this than to brush my teeth--

Again, while this is probably one of the best ways to clean your teeth at this point in time, and an economical way to try one of the products that normally start out at $64e (and up), there is no reason why the e3000 shouldn't be made as well as the better units, or hold up to water/daily use as well as some of the $9 Crest electrics we commonly see.

Customer Review: Delecate, But Good
Summary: 4 Stars

I used to have a Sonicare a long time ago. You know, the VERY expensive plug-in one. Yes, it worked like a dream (just like they say). My DDS could tell the difference. But having another thing to plug-in in our tiny bathroom was a hassle and after about a year the charger was mucked up beyond control. Most embarrassing! Years went by and new dental problems arose. After going through the joys of a root plaining, I was looking for a new Sonicare. I saw this one and loved that it was battery operated and had a smaller head. I didn't need all the bells and whistles on the other models. Just the auto-timer.

The first one that came died in 2 days. WAHHH! Amazon kicked butt and sent us a replacement right away. We've had the new one for a month now and it's still going strong. I think the first one was just defective.

It does go through batteries pretty quick, so I highly suggest you get re-chargeable batteries. My DDS noticed a difference within the month. It's totally worth it, and a great price! It ends up being cheaper than the disposable electric brushes we were using.

A good family brush for all ages. Easy to use, even for kids.

Customer Review: 3 months later and no problems!
Summary: 5 Stars

Had I read these reviews before buying this, I probably wouldn't have purchased it. But I had been looking at the much more expensive Sonicare toothbrushes after my dentist recommended Sonicare after I asked. I didn't ask if there was a certain MODEL that he recommended, so I assumed I'd have to pay from $40-$150 for a Sonicare. When I saw this one for $30 at Target, I figured I didn't have much to lose.

I've had no problems with any of the other problems mentioned and have been happy with how it makes my teeth feel super clean and has even cleaned this spot that even my dental hygienist couldn't get. It turns off automatically after 2 minutes, so I know that I'm brushing my teeth longer. One thing that takes getting used to is NOT removing it while it's going...you'll splatter toothpaste all over yourself! :D Another plus is not having your tummy jiggle like it does with a manual toothbrush!!

The only negative is that it goes thru 2 AA batteries about once a month, but the directions said that it lasts about 60 brushes per battery change and that's about right. I've started using rechargable batteries and have had no problems.

Customer Review: Great first time electric toothbrush!
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this about a year ago and it was my first electric toothbrush. I wasn't sure if I'd like using an electric but the combination of a low price and great ratings persuaded me to buy it. I have to say it works very well! At my dental checkups the dentist always comments that I don't have much plaque on my teeth and since I've started using it, I have had few cavities. I'm not sure if the toothbrush is responsible for that or not.
One of the best features is that it has a two minute timer, so that I always brush for the amount of time that dentists recommend. It's gotten me into the habit of brushing that long even when I'm using a different toothbrush. My only complaint is that it uses regular AA batteries. I find that the batteries generally last somewhere between two and four weeks, but after a few days the speed of the brush head slows down quite a bit. I tried using rechargeable AAs, but they don't deliver enough current to make the brush run.
Because of the low price and the ease of use, this has been a great electric toothbrush to start out with. I think I'll be getting a rechargeable one in the near future though.

Customer Review: Just what I needed.
Summary: 5 Stars

When my old Sonicare Advanced died on me I wanted to get another but did not want to lug around another charger during travel nor have a cord cluttering the limited counter space both in home and in hotels. This thing is a great compromise as I keep AA rechargeable batteries on hand and ready for my cameras, anyway.

After about a month of use I am very satisfied with it.

PROS:

Oscillates as good or better than my old one.
Still on the original batteries.
I brush during my shower and the inside of the battery compartment is bone dry.
Cheaper than the rechargeable units.
Comfortable size.

CONS:

Marketed for teens? Pbbbllt. It can and should be used by everyone.
Doesn't come with a travel case.
Doesn't have the Quad Pacer® feature.

If the oscillating action seems weak, make sure the brush head is inserted correctly (bristles in line with the button) and the collar is on tight.
