Customer Reviews of Philips Sonicare HX6932/10 FlexCare RS930 Rechargeable Electric ToothbrushCustomer Review: Fantastic brush, but with three nitpicks. Summary: 4 Stars
Fuzzy Wuzzy's Summary:
**** Recommended with warm fuzzies.
I love how this thing cleans!
The UV Sanitizer adds a high-tech functionality to the whole package, even though I cannot vouch for its effectiveness. I have always alternated between two manual toothbrushes, thoroughly rinsing each brush after use and letting each totally dry in between use, and I never had any issues with hygiene from contaminated brush bristles (heck, doorknobs, public drinking fountains, kitchen sink sponges, and shaking peoples' hands can carry far more germs.)
***** Excellent 5-fuzzies feature ratings:
***** The unit's design makes it easy to clean off toothpaste residue, there is not much vibration in the handle, and given the vigor of the brushhead's action, I do not mind the "bumblebee on steroids" sound of it. All of the different cleaning modes are highly useful for different users. It has a nice sleek look to its design - this is the toothbrush that George Jetson would be using before he starts his 3-hours-a-day workdays.
*** Not-so-good 3-fuzzies feature ratings:
*** My first minor nitpick is that the brush should remember the cleaning-mode setting that you used last. I always use its MaxCare setting, a nice mixture of teeth cleaning and gum massage. And so instead of just applying toothpaste and turning the unit on, I have to first move the setting down to MaxCare each time before turning on the brush.
*** My second minor nitpick is that at $170, the brush is a bit pricey for what it is. Yes, one could reason that it is worth the dental health benefits. But along with the $8 replacement brush heads, I image that Philips is making a tidy profit from their premium Sonicare model.
*** My one major nitpick is that I see absolutely no logic in designing the brush to have a non-replaceable battery (other than purely for Philips' marketing/sales purposes of planned obsolescence). In this age where too many people throw too many things away, and where our nation's landfills are increasingly cluttered with plastic grocery bags and plastic water bottles being thrown away, this is a disposable product that could have been designed to not be disposable. I would have the same major gripes if Black&Decker designed their rechargeable cordless string trimmer and cordless drills such that I could not replace those batteries and I had to throw away the entire string trimmer or cordless drill after the battery could no longer properly recharge, or if Motorola's cell phones did not allow you to replace its lithium battery and required you to buy a new cell phone after its battery wore out. The cylindrical shape of the toothbrush would be perfect to use with two high-powered (and widely available and inexpensive) 2700mAh NiMH AA rechargeable batteries that one could insert into the barrel of the body, without too much added bulk added to the handle.
Fuzzy Wuzzy's Conclusion:
This toothbrush works great and my teeth always feel awesome after using this!
Customer Review: If you're going to get one, GET THIS ONE. Summary: 5 Stars
I've been a Philips Sonicare fan since I got my first electric tooth brush for aprx $100 (on sale!) at Bed Bath & Beyond in 1997! My Series E toothbrush is still going strong and I have never had a single problem with it. I have traveled with it, I have dropped it a thousand times, and for the past couple years I've shared it with my husband (the handle, not the brush, ew). I've used it for nearly 14 years every single day and I've had good oral health for years! I love it! But the overall appearance of my toothbrush was... kind of old, and gross. I was really sick and tired of cleaning the gunk off the base, and from the inside, and in between the dome and the brush stick. UGH! So gross, so done.
I considered getting the Philips Sonicare Essence 5300 Power Toothbrush because of the price. But then I read the review "Pay more for the better design" by College Jane and I decided to go for this one, the Philips Sonicare FlexCare Rechargeable Sonic Toothbrush with Sanitizer. "I" didn't really care that I got a sanitizer but I wanted THIS toothbrush - plus, it came with TWO brush heads. It was the best deal since I would've had to get extra replacement heads right away with the Essence 5300 Power Toothbrush. I love the multiple settings! I'd had oral surgery the week prior to ordering and I was excited to try their Sensitive mode (it's great by the way!). I love the thinness and how light it is! Not to mention how quiet it is. It makes brushing much easier and pleasant, especially when you have stitches in your mouth and can barely open your mouth. The GoCare is perfect after meals. My husband loves this upgrade as well. He started sharing my old one over a year ago and his oral health improved immediately! But his favorite things about this new toothbrush? How clean it stays, and the sanitizer. My favorite? How much whiter my teeth are! I can only hope this brush lasts me as long as my old one did (I'm storing the old one just in case). I do not like the reviews that complain about loose brush heads and dead units within the first year. They don't make 'em like they used to, I guess.
UPDATE: Dec 2010
A couple of months ago the toothbrush stopped charging. It made a vibrating/pulsating morse code when I put it on it's base to charge. After a week it was dying, and the brushing power was only getting weaker with use. I called the warranty number (1-800-682-7664) and they sent me a new handle (with a new brush head and travel charger included). Super easy. Still, it sucks that I had problems so soon after purchasing it. This can't be a good sign. I hope this one lasts longer...
Customer Review: Oral B vs. Sonicare Summary: 5 Stars
A few years ago - in my quest to find an electric toothbrush per my dentist's instructions led me to stand in front of the products meticulously comparing one vs. another, did it do this that and the other, price point, etc. Oral B won for 1 reason, price and I had a coupon at Costco and their replacement heads were cheaper. That was a few years ago. I was under the impression that all electric toothbrushes were created equally. Although my teeth's health improved, there are still issues. My last cleaning was very intense at the dentist.
My Oral B is almost dead - it's been 2 years, the battery will hold for a couple of days, but not over a week like it used to. The search for the next toothbrush started.
Surprisingly, I didn't have a hard choice with picking Sonicare. I see the demo/advertising whatever at my dentist. I also knew I wasn't happy with OralB - because my teeth didn't feel clean, and I knew that it was definitely not getting into all the contours of my mouth.
My first use with my Sonicare
I felt like a light bulb exploded in my head. It was ridiculous how clean my teeth felt, as if I just had them cleaned and polished at my dentist. How is that possible with only 1 session? Was my Oral B that bad? Maybe this was a fluke. A few more days went by, my teeth stayed with that smooth clean feeling. It's been a few weeks and I'm hooked.
What's so different about it - the brush head for one. Oral B has a circular head, it spins with use. With the Sonicare, it oscillates back and forth, mimicking real tooth brushing motion. There are contours of the brush so it gets between the teeth. The bristles are stiff to clean my teeth but gentle enough to get into the gums w/o causing bleeding. Oral B brush heads were rough and painful.
This product is great for small mouths, hard to reach areas/crevices and for sensitive teeth.
I like that it has options for sensitive and regular or whitening. I like that it's timed so I know I'm doing the right amount. The toothbrush will shut itself off after 2 minutes. It'll be good for kids too, so they're not doing a swipe and say they're done.
I'm very impressed with this product, very glad I got it and can't wait until my next dentist appointment. I've had it for a few weeks and notice not only are my teeth cleaner, but they are truly whiter.
UPDATE:
I've had it for a few months - went for my cleaning and my dental hygienist noticed my teeth/gums were improving. She asked me what I did differently and told her I switched toothbrushes. HA!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE my toothbrush!
Customer Review: A small price to pay for a clean, beautiful smile Summary: 5 Stars
This is the second Sonicare toothbrush I have used in the past few years. The first one I had was an older model but gave similar results. I used the previous model for almost 2 years while I had braces and for each of my semi-annual checkups at the dentist, the dental hygienist was amazed at how clean my teeth were even with braces. The previous model ended up breaking as the buttons got corroded, and stopped working, but given how well the toothbrush worked at cleaning my teeth I decided to give Sonicare another chance.
I've now had this model for almost a year and a half now and it looks like Sonicare really worked to improve their quality. After using 3+ times daily for 1.5 years, I have not noticed any wear on the buttons and am confident this will last.
In addition to an improvement in quality, the flexcare model uses the smaller, ProResults brush heads. Previous Sonicare models required a large replacement head that I always thought was a huge waste and very environmentally unfriendly. The ProResults brush heads use what looks like half as much plastic. It would have been nice if Sonicare passed some of the materials savings onto the consumer, but the replacement heads seem to be about the same cost from what I remember.
I also really like the addition of the UV Sanitizer. I've read research that this may be more of a gimmick than anything else, but nonetheless I like the ability to "quarantine" my brush head away from whatever germs may floating around in between brushings. Additionally, the two brush head holders in the sanitizer make it easy for two people to share the Sonicare and have their individual brush heads. This is one way you can offset the high cost (relative to a normal toothbrush).
I am 100% satisfied with this Sonicare and I recommend it to all of my friends. I also bought one for my father recently and he has nothing to say but good things as well.
I have always believed there are good things to spend money on and products that improve your health definitely fall into that category. I continue to get great feedback from my dentist and the Sonicare is the main reason. It makes perfect sense to proactively take good care of your teeth/gums in order to prevent future issues. Not only will any dental work as a result of poor dental health be much more expensive than this toothbrush, but there's always the chance that whatever damage is done cannot be reversed. Do yourself a favor and buy this toothbrush now to save yourself a headache (or toothache) later.
Customer Review: i'm a convert! Summary: 5 Stars
ok, so i lucked out and got to try this out free as a bzzz reviewer. but that doesn't change the fact that this is an amazing gadget. here's why:
1. it looks pretty. this does not rank high on my list of necessary attributes of my toothbrush, but i just had to say it. and now the fact that it is, makes me happy.
2. it's easy to use, despite being packed with features. won't bore you with the details (which you can read above in the item description), but really, you have just enough options not to overwhelm you, but to suit your every dental hygienic need (short of a root canal or cavity filling, but you shouldn't need them if you keep using this thing). the 2 week "ramp-up" program that gradually increases the power for the 1st 2 weeks you use it is pretty cool.
3. it sterilizes your toothbrush heads. i keep reading those gross articles that talk about the bacteria growing on toothbrushes and flying through the air from flushing toilets and i had to just not think about it. now i can think about it and say, 'ha ha--i gotcha! die a terrible uv death, you bastards!' to those nasty, nasty microbes.
4. it's fun to use. which means i'm now a thorough brusher. ok, so i NEVER in a million years thought i'd use an electric toothbrush b/c i thought it was a stupid idea. but this thing makes me actually want to brush, and even gets me to brush for an entire 2 minutes each time! my dentist would approve. now if they could only do something like this for flossing...
the only drawbacks i see are:
1. i totally agree with the whole messiness issue. toothpaste spit goes flying everywhere unless i keep my mouth closed and even then, i drool. guess it gives philips another reason to invent something i didn't think i needed--a toothbrushing shield/guard to protect my mirror from all those annoying toothpaste spit spray dots. i just make sure to change into my day clothes AFTER brushing. hint: ALWAYS always *ALWAYS* turn off the toothbrush BEFORE removing it from your mouth, unless you want the 'snow-covered' look on every surface in your bathroom.
2. it's slightly more cumbersome to travel with. but i don't do much traveling anymore w/2 small kids. and even if i did, i could just bring a regular toothbrush and leave my new treasured toothbrush safely at home.
3. i guess i'll have to buy refills. which i'm sure will cost more than the 2 buck ones at the drugstore. but did i mention my toothbrush is now pretty?
