Customer Review: Better than I thought they would be

For some reason I thought that this pillow speaker was totally flat so that you could put your head on it without something poking into your head. When I received this and felt the two speakers I was at first disappointed, thinking that it just wouldn't work for me and would be uncomfortable. Having said that, I'm happy to report that it DOES work, and the sound is so good that it doesn't have to be directly under the head to hear quite well. I usually sleep on my stomach with my head turned to the right and put the speaker under the pillow at the edge where it doesn't interfere with my comfort. My husband can't hear it and I'm comfortable. Formerly when I would listen to the radio at night, in order not to disturb my husband, I had to make it so low that basically I couldn't hear it unless I put my head almost onto the night table where I have the radio.
I've used the other type - the hard plastic round speaker that goes under the pillow. For me, that type is completely unusable because no amount of pillow adjusting prevents me from feeling the speaker. Putting it on or along side the pillow didn't work well either. It was either so loud my husband was bothered by the the sound, or so low I couldn't hear well. This is a much better solution.
Just to be clear - the speakers in the Pillowsonic are fairly,but not completely, flat. Maybe they protrude an inch or so but because they work so well it isn't necessary to have the speaker directly under your head. And they work just as well if you sleep on your side or back.
As for the quality of sound - it's pretty good. I usually listen to talk radio and thus far I have no complaints. And when I listen to music at bedtime, it's always classical and again, thus far it's fine. This product is about helping you fall asleep - you can't nor should you expect superior tone. For my purposes, as long as I can clearly hear, I'm happy. When I want great sounding tone I listen to my stereo and that's during the day, not when it's time to go to sleep. If they hold up for even 6 months I'll be happy. Of course it would be better if they lasted for years, but from what some of you have reported, they don't last nearly that long. In the meantime I'm very pleased. I can listen comfortably to the radio at night without the sound bothering my husband. That's all I wanted.

As there are plenty of reviews on this product, I will not be redundant. I recently contacted Amazon regarding an increasing loss of sound for my PillowSonic due to a deterioration of the plug connection. Amazon put me in touch with the manufacturer, which does offer a one year warranty. They were receptive, concerned, polite and responsive and I had a replacement in a matter of days, with no hassle. BUT THE BEST NEWS is that they have IMPROVED the plug connection and are now using a superior plug which will not break down so easily. There also appears to be an improvement with the interior connections, but I am not about to open this product and risk damaging it for a review. Don't you love a company that actually listens and improves the product in response to customers and/or reviews? FYI: I use an iPod and have increased my volume by 100% using the iTunes program. Just click your song(s), audio book, playlist, etc. in iTunes and highlight the desired selections. Right-click and select "get info". Under the "option" tab you will find a volume adjustment tool at the top of the box and just drag the arrow to increase or decrease your volume. ALSO, on your ipod, you can adjust the volume limit. Under "Settings" choose "Playback" then "volume Limit" and you will see a volume control icon that you can adjust. I primarily use this to limit the volume from accidental increase. There is a subsequent lock option that I have accidentally found, as it does not always appear, but find it unnecessary. Now I am ready to order another PillowSonic for travel! I bought these with the specific intention of using the iPhone sleep app pzizz, which plays both music and speech audio. Unfortunately, you cannot hear the speech at all!
To make sure I wasn't losing my hearing and just couldn't hear it through my pillow, I put my ear directly next to the pillow speaker and STILL couldn't hear any speech! Then I unplugged the pillow speaker and yes, the text audio was playing. So it wasn't just a matter of the speech being muffled through my own pillow--there was simply NO speech coming out at all!
I thought that was very strange (since the music was just fine) so I tried a random song on my iPod and I was able to hear that words were playing--but it was definitely muffled through the pillow. Granted, if you were listening to music through your pillow, you wouldn't be listening specifically to the words, but rather just the music piece as a whole...but if you want to hear the words, you're out of luck. Again, I put my ear directly to the pillow speaker to see if the words were any clearer--and they weren't! They were REALLY garbled. I thought maybe it was just a bad connection, but playing with the headphone jack did nothing. And that wouldn't even explain why I couldn't hear ANY words at all in the pzizz app.
My last trial was a podcast, which is all spoken. And even with my phone at full volume, the podcast was SO quiet directly next to my ear that there was NO way I would be able to hear anything through my pillow.
I sooooo wanted to love these, but they're going back. If you just want to hear things like your thunderstorm or rainforest music, they would work fine. But if you want to actually LISTEN to what is being said, forget about it.

This product is essential two very flat speakers, but not that different from those in your headphones, inserted into a rectangular pocket of foam. There are hard pieces in the pillowspeaker, but there is enough foam in front of it, that you can sleep on it comfortably, as the back of the speaker just presses further into your pillow.
I cannot use this underneath my pillow as I have a temperpedic memory foam pillow - its just too dense to hear the speaker well even at the highest volume - but a regular pillow would work much better.
However, I put this right on top of my pillow and put my ear on top of it, it works great, I tend to keep it at the highest volume and just adjust the distance of the pillow to my ear depending on how loud I want to perceive it, the speakers do not have a volume on them (that would be a nice feature). I've slept on this every night for 7 months and no visible wear or tear has appeared.
The only drawback is that the pillow has two plastic tabs similar the small end of a plastic tag holder that holds a price tag to your new clothes on the front, and that scratches my face, I cut it off though with no apparent reprocussions, I'm not sure what purpose they served, perhaps to hold wires in place.
Overall, this is exactly what I was looking for as I need to listen to something to fall asleep, but with kids and husband often sleeping in the same room, I don't want to play it on a regular speaker.

I looked into buying this product because there was a little problem with my folks in the bedroom. Each wanted to watch different shows before bed. I had a bright idea to put two TV's in the bedroom, similar to what I had seen in hospital rooms where there was two people in a room trying to enjoy different TV shows. I put one TV on either side of the bed mounted to the wall to minimize disturbing the other person. I bought two pillow sonic speakers and tried them out. I did read the mixed reviews on the product, but still felt it would meet my needs.
My mother, who is a light sleeper with good hearing found the pillow speakers to work perfectly. She could watch her show and not disturb my father with the noise. For anyone who can hear fairly well, I give this product 5 stars.
My father, who is slightly hard of hearing, found it manageable to hear his programs and not disturb my mother. He does find himself putting the speaker pillow on his chest from time to time because he can't get the volume loud enough to hear all. His very nice 19" flat screen TV just doesn't deliver enough volume in the speaker when it's under the pillow. For a person a little hard of hearing, I give it 3 stars.
Over all I am very pleased with the results. Most of the time both people are able to watch their shows and not disturb each other. For the price and the functionality, this is a really good set up.
