I bought these speakers because I had been looking for a replacement for the uncomfortable, but high-quality, headsets I had been using when I slept. The obvious news--the quality doesn't come near that of the $150 headsets. However, there is no comparison in terms of sleeping comfort. I find the stereo speakers to be quite adequate for use when going to sleep. My husband is ecstatic that I'm not shutting out the world with my music when I go to bed, my ears are happier because I'm not causing them any pain, and I joyfully go off to never-never-land without any obtrusive wires dangling off of me. I use the speakers with my ipod, which I have plugged in to a charger, so I can play music throughout the night and wake up to a fully charged mp3 player. I'm happy as a clam that I purchased this product.Customer Review: Excellent solution!

I listen to meditation CDs when going to bed. Headphones are uncomfortable so I use the regular stereo when I'm by myself and can close the door. But that's not always possible. When trying these out, the other person in bed could hear the speakers slightly. However, when I actually put them on at bed time, he had no idea. If you can turn them up loud enough to place your ear on your pillow between the speakers, it is really excellent! But even if you have to keep the volume lower, you can put your ear right over one of the speakers and hear just fine. I think that might have been the problem with the other person reviewing this. If you don't have the volume up loud enough and you put your ear between the speakers, you really can't hear it. But move an inch either way and you're golden! I use a pillow speaker every night to help me fall asleep. My beloved Sharper Image speaker has served me well but has become frayed at the connection and is soon to die, I'm afraid. So I am searching for a replacement. This isn't it.
After a few nights of use, something is going wrong with the connections ... it reminds me of when I had my headphones plugged into my Sony Sport Walkman and the connection would get all wonky and I'd have to pull the jack out and blow on it? Remember those days?
Anyway, so with these, if I jiggle the pillow or my head about a bit, the connection comes back. I haven't even pulled it out to investigate, but I assume this performance means the connections are not long for this world. Poo. The search is still on for a good pillow speaker.

So, I have used pillow speakers for over 20 years. Mostly used various Radio Shack speakers. After a year or two the wires would break and I would have to buy another one. No big deal when they are under $10.
This speaker is really two stereo speakers in a enclosure. The enclosure keeps it from sliding which I find very useful. My only speakers would be on the floor in the morning on occasion. Also when it would slide it would stress the cable.
With this speaker, I tuck about 1 ft of cord into the enclosure to releave stress at the speaker and so far the cable stays put. This should help with the wire breakage. Time will tell.
The sound is also much better than the Radio Shack version.
Overall, worth it. A+

This product has been such a godsend. I have suffered from insomnia for years. Having a radio or mp3 on is helpful but disturbs my husband's sleep. I found these pillow speakers about a year ago and have been using them nightly since then, including when I travel (they actually pack quite well). I can now listen (when volume is turned up) or have background noise (when I turn it down) and my husband doesn't hear a thing. I don't find them hard under the pillow and in fact don't feel them at all.
Like others have reported, the volume with some devices can be a little weak (so only 4 stars not 5), but I found the Koss VC20 was an inexpensive and useful solution, enabling adequate sound amplification as well as adding volume control.
