Customer Review: Trust the negative reviews
Summary: 1 Stars

Update 4-11-10 If I could give this product negative 5 I would!!!

It died again after plugging it in and the blue light went out indicating that it was fully charged. I began to shave my head and guess what? Yup, you guessed it. The red light came on and the blades stopped moving. I threw it in the trash and will never buy another Remington product in my life. CHEAP I am so disgusted with this thing I could scream. To emphasize my 10 yr old plus Wahl clippers still work to this day!! If you buy this product after reading ALL the bad reviews, that is your fault! Shame on Remington for selling such a worthless piece of

Update 11-21-09 I was suprised to find that Remington was willing to warranty this product without a receipt. They asked me for the date code under the sliding sideburn trimmer. They sent out a replacement at no charge. However, the replacement worked for about 2 months and then it seemingly died as well. I was amazed that a forceful tap into my palm to jostle the internal parts actually brought it back to life. One of those one in a million things. It has worked since and I guess I will continue to use it until it dies again. This is obviously a trouble prone product. It also takes very very long to charge. Sometimes over 24 hrs. Good customer service from Remington but not a very good product.

First I will say I have been trimming my own hair for the last 15 yrs. I have been very happy with this product until it recently went from working just fine to not taking a charge at all!! The battery just died with no warning. I have only had mine for about a year. This is completely unacceptable since my corded/battery operated Wahl trimmer which is over 10 yrs old will still take a charge with the original battery. Of course I can't find the receipt, so in the trash it goes. I DON'T TRUST THE FOUR YEAR WARRANTY STATEMENT! I dug out my owners manual and it says two years. Maybe they have upped the warranty since a year ago, but I don't buy it! I used mine to bald my head, but after reading all the other reviews, it makes sense to me that anyone with the desire to maintain some hair length will not like this clipper. The problem is that there would be no way to accurately keep the clipper the same distance from your head even with the attachment on. This is a very long, curved blade and when you are trimming flat spots on your head you are much closer on the ends of the blade than you are on the middle. Try it at your own risk if you want bald. Stay away if you want to maintain some length. I will go back to using my old trusty!!

Customer Review: Hair's the buzz
Summary: 3 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The first thing that you should know about this clipper is that it's called the "Shortcut" for a reason, the reason being that it only works if you want a buzz cut with your scalp showing.

The second thing is that you should read the instructions before using it. It comes with the "balding comb" attached, so if you decide to charge it and start clipping, you're going to end up with a buzz cut.

Pros:

1. It comes in an easy to open package that you won't need a chainsaw to open
2. It includes two combs, a cleaning brush, blade oil, a charging adapter and an instruction manual
3. It's compact and easy to hold
4. It doesn't come with a bunch of different sized cutter attachments, as it uses a 5 position zoom wheel to set the length of cut you need
5. It has a pop out trimmer for around the ears and neck area
6. It has a warning light to tell you when it should be recharged

Cons:

1. It takes about 16 hours for a full charge
2. As mentioned above, it comes with the balding comb already attached, and unless you read the instructions first (or this review) you won't know that the adjustable hair length settings only work with the adjustable guide comb. If you need to trim longer hair, you MUST change the comb first.
3. It doesn't work well with the adjustable guide comb. It hardly looks as though it's doing any cutting at all, but in a very short time you'll find that the hair clogs up the comb, necessitating removing the comb and cleaning it out before continuing. (The comb is curved inwards at the top, with horizontal bars, and these trap the hair, clogging the blades)
4. It takes much too long to get the job done.
5. The pop out trimmer works, but is tough on tender skin.
6. The location of the "on" button makes it much too easy for accidental starting while popping out the trimmer or changing the combs.

I wouldn't recommend this for anything longer than a buzz cut or complete hair removal. For longer hair that just needs a quick trim, there are better clippers available.

For buzz cuts - 4 stars
For longer cuts - 1 star
Average - 2.5 stars

Customer Review: Doesn't replace my wife's hair cuts, but not bad...
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
As part of the Amazon Vine program, I recently received a review unit of the Remington Short Cut Clipper. Being somewhat "follicly challenged", I thought this might be a quick and easy way to keep my hair trimmed to its shorter length without having to beg and plead for the wife to give me a hair cut. Generally speaking, it works pretty well. I probably should have started out with a setting of 2 rather than 1.5, as 1.5 is quite a bit shorter than I normally go...

The idea here is that you can cut your hair with the same motions you'd use to brush it. The cutting head is curved, so you have more surface contact as you move across your hair. There's less of a chance for gouges and bald spots. There's also a pop-out trimmer on the top that you can use to get hairlines cut properly. After the initial charge, I started brushing away to see what would happen. In the course of about five minutes, I was the proud owner of a haircut that wouldn't be out of place on a Marine base after six weeks of basic training. My wife came in and went over a few places where I hadn't gotten the same level of cut and/or couldn't see. We both agreed that her hair cuts are better using a trimmer with a #2 attachment.

On the plus side, it is tailored for the short-all-over hair styles, and it works well in that niche. It's best to make sure you're standing over a sink or on a towel to catch some of the hair that falls. The style of the attachment does catch a fair amount of the hair, and you can simply pop it off to empty it out every couple of minutes. On the down side, it can leave some uneven patches on the shorter settings if you don't happen to have a perfectly spherical noggin. I have a couple of small bumps on my head that have less hair than the surrounding territory now...

This won't replace my wife's efforts, as her results are better. But with a higher length setting, this could be ideal for those 3rd week touch-ups to keep from waking up with strange parts in my hair. And if you're the type that goes for the nearly bald/razor stubble look, then this would be ideal for getting and keeping your hair (or lack thereof) at that perfect length.

Customer Review: Fast and Flawless, Astonishingly Easy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was skeptical when I bought the Short Cut, apprehensive as hell the first time I took it to my head. No more. This thing is amazing! I used setting 3 on already short hair from a barbershop visit (my last, I think) 2 1/2 weeks ago. In 2-3 minutes, my hair looked exactly as it did when I last left the barber's chair: Really short, cleanly cut, even all over.

Simple. Flawless. Even (dare I say?) FUN. I ran it slowly and steadily back and forth from front of head and down the back, then back the other direction, then ear to ear over the top, then back the other way, then along each side above the ears. You can use this baby about every 7-10 days (takes all of 2-3 minutes) and keep your hair exactly the length you want in perpetuity with nary the need for another time-consuming barbershop visit. Absolutely amazing. Now I'm thinking about going to a 2 and see what happens. I used setting 1 to trim the lower regions of my neck in the back and this seems to have worked well.

It seems that many of the gripes in this review section are from people who tried with little success to cut through long hair with it. The SC just is not designed for this. What it IS designed to do is keep already short hair short, or shorter.

What I did, and would suggest, is to visit the barber one more time and get your hair cut as short as you want, then when it just starts to get too long, go over it with the SC.

But, jeez, I just don't see how anyone can screw it up.

Update, 8/1: I found that the best way to get a quick, even cut is to wash your hair, let it dry completely (about 3 minutes with super short hair), THEN use the short cut. This way your hair is straight up all over and doesn't have a chance to get flattened anywhere on your head. Also, just spread a sheet of newspaper over the wash basin; this catches almost all the hair. Just fold it up and toss when you're done. I've also done my cutting over the wash basin itself which seems to catch just about all the clippings. Then you just take a folded piece of toilet tissue, wet it lightly and scour the inside of the bowl. You get about 90% on the first pass, then use a dry sheet to clean up the rest. I'm really surprised at the some of the problems reported in the negative reviews. The whole process is about as simple and efficient as is realistically and reasonably possible.

Customer Review: just what I needed for very short haircut
Summary: 5 Stars

This Remington Short Cut Clipper is just what I needed for a very short hair cut.

Before getting this about 3 weeks ago, I had been trying to cut my own hair with straight edge electric clippers, but wasn't able to give myself an even cut, and it was a big 10-minute precarious effort. About a month ago I tried to give myself an even closer cut with the other clippers and ended up with galges, which I would could repair only by completing shaving my head. That was entertaining to be completely bald one time in my life, but there was no way I was going spend a big chunk of time shaving my head with a razor every day or two. So, I Googled around to see what others do for very short hair cuts, and found almost no up-to-date advice. Luckily, I stumbled upon the Remington Short Cut Clipper at Amazon. For the incredibly cheap price ($30 not even counting Amazon's discount), I figured it was worth a try.

This turned out to be one of the satisfying consumer products I've purchased in recent years. I can now give myself a close cut, as close as I want, but also at more moderate close lengths, in just a few minutes. The result is an even cut, unless I incorrectly dig the clipper into some spot on my head. Don't do that.

I also use the clipper as a great beard trimmer, although such use isn't advertised. It works better as a beard trimmer than the straight clippers I had been using.

The handle shape of the clipper is ideal, in my opinion. A few days ago I saw another competitive clipper that was held sort of like a hand-held sander. I can't envision that as being as convenient as comfortable for the hand as this handle-shaped clipper.

The only negative I offer here is not strong enough for me to reduce my 5-star rating. It seems that the device is somewhat unforgiving about being fed a charge regularly. Sometimes I have to wait a day to clip because I forgot to reconnect the clipper to the charger. Keep it charged.

This is the first Amazon review I've ever written. I felt compelled to pass my high rating of the Remington Short Cut Clipper to others that might have been where I was 3 weeks ago, wondering what to do once the hair grew back from the bald starting point I had arrived at because of the little disaster using another far inferior clipper.
