Customer Review: Short Hair is In, Especially if you have as much out as in :-)
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have been thinking for quite some time to cut my hair real short, to counteract the ongoing thinness on my crown. Finally this Remington Short Clipper made me go for it. At first I was disappointed; inasmuch as my hair was shorter then I was hoping for. If you are looking to get 1/2" thick hair, you won't get it here. You're lucky to get 1/4". Going from long to short, you will need to go to about 1/8" first, and then let it grow in a little, and then go for the deepest setting.
It has been a couple of hours and I am starting to like myself with the thin top. With the fuzz on top that is left, I feel like I don't always have to wear a hat. This may sound odd, but I am seriously thinking of getting back into working out now. You know treadmill, and weight lifting. With the short hair I feel like I am in the service or something. It does give me a feeling of a desire to start to exercize again.
This razor is convenient because it is cordless. At first I was amazed at how flexible it is in terms of how deep of a cut you want to take. There are several settings you can easily change with the thumbwheel. It also comes with the balding safety comb; the one that extends beyond the teeth so your skin does not come into contact with the moving blades. You'll need to finish up around your ears with a pair of scissors if you are going for extra neat.
I did my entire head. If you keep going back and forth, causing the hair to stand up, it gets it all one length. This is not like the old barber shears that will bald you in a single pass. The hair gets caught in the safety comb, and with a light tap, or quickly pulling the long hairs out by hand it clears it for another pass.
I am sure this will be great for keeping a beard close for the winter. I used it on my moustache, and it doesn't do a very even job of it. I prefer scissors for my muzzy. :-)
Anyhow, I am glad that I have it. For the price it is a great unit. Just wish they had a medium length unit.

I have been using a set of power clippers with a cord for years to cut my own hair. It is fine but the cord is limiting and with standard clippers it is hard to get the back of your head. This cordless Remington Shortcut Clipper makes cutting your hair as easy as brushing it.

This is perfect for me for I keep my hair cut short as if I was in boot camp and this is what these clippers were designed for. These clippers come with two comb inserts. The one it is shipped with is the balding comb, so hopefully you read the instructions before using it like I did and do not find this out the hard way. The other comb attachment that combs along with it is an adjustable guide that is designed to work with the zoom wheel.

The zoom wheel and adjustable guide allows you to cut your hair to one of five different settings. These setting range from as short as one-eighth of an inch to as long as a half-inch in length. This clipper is not designed for hair any longer than that. I personally use the shortest setting, #1, and love it. The unit also has a built in pop-out trimmer that works well.

This light, easy to use unit worked well for me and I had no trouble with the battery not holding a charge. I actually do not keep it plugged in. I only charge it when the low battery light comes on. Though the instructions do say you may leave the unit plugged in for you cannot overcharge it. This is also very easy to clean.

The only problem I had with the unit was minor. The comb attachments are made of cheap plastic and are fragile. I almost broke the balding comb in half when I tried to remove it. Of course now the combs come out very easily. So just be careful your first time.

I recommend the unit and emphasis that you should read the instructions before using. It would be a great gift for anyone going into the military or just likes to keep their hair short.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This rechargeable clipper by Remington is a great idea, and works well once you get the hang of it. The design is unique and has some excellent features. The cutting area and guards are curved to better fit the shape of your head. It is also a wider cutting area than traditional clippers so you can cut your hair much quicker. It is comfortable in your hand and comes with 2 guards that fit over the blades. Additionally, the blades can be raised higher or lower by turning a dial on the body of the clipper. So there is quite a bit of hair length adjustment possible. The cordless aspect of this clipper is especially nice.

The instructions aren't especially helpful and I think their claim that it's fool-proof is a bit overstated. There is definitely a learning curve before you achieve excellent results every time. (I wouldn't use this for the first time the day before your wedding or something.) As suggested, you should start with a much longer setting that you actually want while you are learning. You can always make it shorter.

The curved shape is actually pretty good, but there are places on most heads that are not curved, especially around and behind the ears. That's where it's tricky and takes practice, but an even cut can be achieved. The pop-up trimmer is very nice and works well.

As mentioned by others, you can leave it plugged in between uses and you should. The charger does not work as an a/c adapter so you cannot use the clipper while it is plugged in.

There have been several comments about these units breaking quickly. After a few months, mine began to have issues with not turning on. I think the switch design must be poor because after juggling and whacking my unit, I have always been able to get it to turn on (eventually). Of course, I am expecting that one day, it won't power on anymore.

Customer Review: Inferior design.

A good single-purpose trimmer but inferior electrical components. And Remington knows it!

----- ORIGINAL 2008 REVIEW TEXT DELETED 24-NOV-09. -----

Purchased July, 2008.

UPDATE March 2009: One day I noticed the blue charge light failed to light up when I plugged in the SCC-100R for a charge. I was able to draw 150 ma from the wall wart with no voltage drop; clearly something was amiss with the battery circuits in the trimmer. I followed the procedure outlined in the manual and sent it in for warranty resolution. They received it on March 16 and on March 29 a new one arrived. It cost me $7.11, plus packaging and a trip to the FedEx depot.

Considering its almost 8 months of usage, two to three times a month, my original SCC-100R failed after less than two dozen duty/recharge cycles. I trust this was the result of substandard parts slipping under the QC wire and not poor engineering. I am hoping this new one will offer the years of service I've received and come to expect from my other rechargeable devices. Fortunately, the warranty is two years. If it happens again within this time frame, it's still covered but I won't be too wild about having to cough up shipping again.

UPDATE November 2009: After 8 months, the second unit has failed in the same exact way the first one did again after less than two dozen duty cycles! The electrical components are clearly inferior; rechargeable consumer products have been on the market for almost 30 years. What's Remington's problem?? It's going back for a second warranty replacement. So far I've spent $14 on shipping which is half the cost of the original purchase. Rating drops to ONE STAR.

UPDATE December 2009: Well, instead of a 2nd warranty replacement, I received a check for $34.99. And I'm out $14. This pretty well verifies that Remington does not have a working design available. The stub says, "Thank you for contacting us and we hope you will continue to use our products with confidence." I'm thinking... NOT! Not ever.

Customer Review: Clever

I have to say that I don't really like the bother of getting haircuts. I work very long hours as I'm the sole support for my family and I usually wait until I "have to go" and then I usually find one of those store front places like "Supercuts" or "Fantastic Sam's." The cuts from those places vary from pretty good to not so good.

In addition, I have been going bald for the last 20 years and now I only have a little tuft of hair up front and I finally decided that I had had enough and I asked the stylist to "buzz all my hair off." When she had finished I was surprised at how much I liked the look and how easy it seamed to cut it (it took her about 2 minutes).

Later that week I went to Walmart and found the Remington and I have to say that it is a cleaver product that works well. It is small and lightweight and cordless. It basically looks like a brush. It is strictly designed for short hair cuts but it does those cuts well and you can adjust your hair length by turning a little thumb wheel on the clipper. In addition, it has a push out trimmer that also works well.

You can actually cut your hair without a mirror and I tend to go into the tub to cut my hair and then take a shower to wash all the loose hairs down the drain when I'm done (the clipper in not waterproof).

Because it is a small unit it doesn't have the power to cut through long hair. When my son wanted a haircut "like dads," I first had to cut his hair down to size with traditional clippers and then I did the rest with the Remington. Several neighbors commented how nice his hair looked! In addition you have to occasionally "tap out" your hair from the cutting mechanism during a cut. Lastly, the power switch is easy to accidently turn off when you are holding the unit. All of these "complaints" are fairly trivial.

All in all, if you have a short "buzz cut" this device delivers at a reasonable price. Definitely recommended.
