Customer Reviews of Rescue Remedy (20ml vial)Customer Review: Subtlely changes your awareness Summary: 4 Stars
I bought some of the pet formulation for my cat who has separation anxiety. It was recommended by our animal shelter. It may have taken the edge off for him (he is a little less standoffish and will climb up onto the bed with me), but overall hasn't helped much. He still howls and paws at the door when one of us walks to get the mail or goes out shopping.
The human formulation may contain the sugar-alcohol xylitol (found in sugar-free chewing gum), which causes hypoglycemia in dogs [...]. The dosage is so low here that I don't think it would be an issue though.
I tried 4 drops on myself right after I bought it, to see if it was all hooey. Wikipedia said clinical trials showed nothing, and it is from the 1930's; I'm thinking patent medicine. This happened to be in the middle of a workday, which gave me more insight. The effect was subtle, but part of my awareness was definitely missing. I was able to do my job (computer programming), answer questions, play foosball just as well. But I would forget what I'd been working on before someone's question. It put me more into the moment. I have an internal dialogue that is making plans and decisions; afterwards I realized that that had been missing. I was in the moment, like a surfer "going with the flow". I suppose if my job was stressful (it's usually not), it would have reduced my ability to worry. I'll have to try it as a study aid; it might help me to focus.
I met someone who took the drug Neurontin for an entire year for pain from a neuroma that grew after several toes were amputated by a falling object. He said it had affected the nerves in his brain too; he used to be really sharp and is now in a fog. Of course now we are talking a very powerful drug, but I'm hesitant to take anything that shuts off anything in my brain for a long period, herbal or not.
Customer Review: Good for animals Summary: 4 Stars
I initially purchased this to help calm my cat for the 1100 mile move he was about to go on. I was pretty worried, because he reacted badly to sedatives when he was neutered (was actually really hyper after he woke up and came home - took days for him to completely calm down.) So although a lot of animal websites recommend going to the vet for sedatives to help cats with traveling, I didn't want him to completely freak out like he had before. I got mine at Whole Foods and tried a little bit on him on the days leading up to our move. I didn't notice a real difference then.
When it came time to move, I dosed him with the Rescue Remedy. He was an absolute angel the first night of the trip. Didn't make a peep in his carrier, didn't try to scratch it apart. I was actually really proud of the little guy. The next two days that I used it while traveling, it took a while to calm him down - maybe an hour, but after that he was perfect. Fell asleep a few times, but mostly just sat in his carrier enjoying the ride.
I've read that it helps ease the anxiety for animals moving to new places or being introduced to new pets, but I can't really speak to that yet. I held off on giving him any of the Rescue Remedy once we were at our new home, just let him take his time getting used to the new place. There is another cat and a dog here - and when we finally introduce them I will be using it on all of the animals to help ease tension.
I've also used it on myself a few times. It's certainly not as potent as a prescription anti-anxiety med, but I think it does calm me down a bit. Not much, and it takes a lot to have any effect, but there is a slight difference. Like others have said, everyone reacts differently. I would definitely recommend for traveling with pets.
Customer Review: it's a toss-up Summary: 3 Stars
To be honest, I was very skeptical of this when I took it, but my stepmom swears by it, and I was into herbal remedies at the time. About four years ago I was facing taking my first driving test and was terrified that I was going to utterly destroy myself out there. I'd only had a week to learn how to drive -- I was 21, you see, and had been living in the city without a car. I put on a pair of sneakers and my stepmom handed me a glass of water and put the recommended dose in it. I continued freaking out about the test for a few minutes.
Once I got there, though, I was like a zen master. I don't know if it was just placebo (it seems like it simply must be -- see the "brandy" review below) or if it really did something for me, but I hadn't felt THAT calm in a long time. I even aced parallel parking, which I'd only had time to practice for an hour or two the day before.
So I guess the question is, are you willing to try it and see? :) I don't know that I'd buy it again. I guess it's like sinking a basket on the first try -- you don't want to go for it again, because you wouldn't feel like a winner if you didn't pull it off twice.
Customer Review: Not effective for my anxiety... Summary: 1 Stars
After reading all the wonderful reviews on this product, I became very excited in trying it. You see, I have been suffering from anxiety attacks for a few months now and I wanted to try something natural before going on prescription meds. I don't know, maybe my anxiety is too severe for this product but I felt absolutely nothing. I also tried Rescue Remedy more then a few times to give it a chance. I mean, I really wanted this to work.
To make sure it was not just me I gave some to my mother who is going through menopause and goes through slight bouts of anxiety as well. She told me it actually made her feel "jittery" and left a bad taste in her mouth. My therapist taught me some special breathing exercises that instantly calm me down. I'm going to do that instead, it costs nothing and is more effective. I'm happy that it's worked for other reviewers, though for me putting drops of vodka under my tongue would have had the same effect.
Customer Review: Pretty expensive way to buy brandy. Summary: 1 Stars
In a Google search for Bach Rescue Remedy shows there is no evidence that Bach Rescue Remedy is any more effective than a placebo:"Flower remedies": a systematic review of the clinical evidence." (Wien KlinWochenschr. 2002 Dec 30;114(23-24):963-6.).
Your money is better spent elsewhere.
Bach Rescue Remedy is a 5X dilution, which is 1/100,000 dilution.
You are buying a solution that is 99.999% brandy. In the 10ML size, you are buying about .00001 ML of cure and 9.99999 ML of brandy. Each 4 drop dose is made up of about ML ounces) of the remedy. ( Which assumes 15 drops per ML ).
Even if you double these numbers for a 20ML bottle, it's no bargain.
You'd be better off spending the purchase price on a bottle of brandy or a pound of gourmet chocolate -- whichever you find more relaxing
