Customer Reviews of Revolutionary, Patented SLEEP MASTER Sleep Mask

Customer Review: Good for overall comfort and light protection as long as eyes are closed.
Summary: 4 Stars

I've now used 3 different masks hoping for optimal comfort and light blockage. The Sleep Master was by far the most comfortable fit for me compared to the Tempur-Pedic Sleep Mask and the Mindfold Black out Sleeping Mask as long as I planned to keep my eyes closed.

My goal for a sleep mask is to assist in catching 1-2 more hours of good sleep in the summer months when early morning light starts streaming in about 5 AM through a window in my bedroom that is nearly impossible to adequately drape without undo financial expense. Otherwise I am a relatively easy sleeper. I don't expect to wear the mask through the whole night -- just slip it on if I am sleeping lightly or not at all in those final hours. I am most interested if work-related issues cut my available sleep options down to only 4-5 hours and these are further hampered by summer light. Thus my experience may be different than those who routinely need a full 8-hour mask.

I think that one of the most difficult issues in sleep masks is that having differently shaped faces is going to influence whether we are personlaly satisfied or disappointed -- particularly if the expectation is a total blackout of external light. Its hard to get something to fit well enough without being uncomfortable and intruding on sleep while still providing extreme "black out". Also, the longer we are exposed to low light, the more sensitive we will beocme to just a few stray photons.

That said. This mask excelled for comfort as long as my eyes were closed. It was optimized for sleep and relies on closed eyes somewhat to minimize awareness of external light. It might shift a little with sidelying or leaning against an airline window but not markedly enough for me to interfere with nasal breathing or create sinus pressure. It might allow more light leakage after moving around some during sleep (particularly at the bottom and around the nose, but so far this has not been a major concern to me.

If I planned to use it for meditation, I would need to adjust my expectations some -- it doesn't accomodate eyes open as well ss the Mindfold or Tempur-Pedic. However, its lighter weight and silkier feel against the skin are an advantage if one meditates with eyes closed. Thus willingness to make some adaptations might make it a favorite. For persons who wear a mask for other purposes, such as simulated experiences of visual impairment, for holotropic breathwork sessions, or a migraine phase with photosensitivity in which complete blackout might not be unnecessary, I think this model could work very nicely.

SUMMARY

What I liked best about the Sleep Master was a fairly moderate price, excellent comfort, and quite decent light blockage. Ordinarily I would also like the sound dampening feature of the retaining strap. This would likely be a plus for many other users. (But it becomes a bit of a hinderance for me on call nights, because I do want to hear my phone well...so on these nights I wear the Tempur-Pedic.) If 1/2 star rankings were permitted I would rank it as 4 and 1/2. I didn't rate it as a five-star product because I still wish that it was possible to have my eyes open without scrapping my eyelids, and a bit more light blockage.

Unfortunately, none of the masks I tried were completely satisfying for comfort and blackout, despite being on the moderate to higher end of the price range for this type of product. I suspect it is inevitable that no single mask will optimally fit both men and women across all levels of fitness and facial contours. Making more customer-specific masks may be possible, but these could then be harder to sell by mail when understandably there is a no-return-if-used policy due to hygeine policies.

Customer Review: Unlike Neoprene Eye Masks I Tried In Past This Does Not Cause Allergic Reaction
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best sleep mask I've ever had.

The one I used, before sticking with this one, was made of black neoprene which after three weeks of nightly use made my eyes swell and my face develop a rash, so for three more weeks I had an itchy, red, puffy facial problem, which as my son would say, was a bummer, Dude.

I've been using the Sleep Master eye mask nightly, for the past two years or so, and it causes no problems. The coverage is terrific, it can be adjusted with Velcro strips in back, it keeps more light out than the neoprene one I had, which didn't cover enough, let light in from around my nose, and also fit too tight around my brow area.

I let my husband borrow my SLEEP MASTER eye mask and use it when I am lying beside him reading in bed with a bedside lamp on and he has to get up early for work. When I turn out the light I nudge him and he gives it back to me. The nice thing about how the SLEEP MASTER is made is that my husband wearing it does not stretch it out and make it too big for me, which is because the material is not stretchy--you use the Velcro closure for tightening and loosening it. (Big Duh Here: I guess I should be generous and buy my husband his own mask.)

This SLEEP MASTER eye mask does NOT block out noise--as some reviewer claimed--not for me, anyway; and it isn't made to block out noise--it's an EYE mask.

For noise blocking, I use Howard Leight Max Lite uncorded ear plugs, bought in bulk (500 at a time) via a shop whose rear end rhymes with Hey!. I wear earplugs every night because my husband doesn't just snore, he snorts and chokes (he has sleep apnea), and otherwise makes disturbing sounds I can't identify and sure don't want to hear.

The SLEEP MASTER, though not made of silk, has a silky feel, and that feels great against my skin. I'm sensitive to fabrics, textures, all sorts of things, and I love, even need, how with the SLEEP MASTER, I can roll over from lying on my back relaxing before sleep, to sleeping on each side, throughout the night, without being aware of the mask. (Aside from the allergic reaction I had to the neoprene eye mask, I was always aware of its fabric being a bit puffy, a bit scratchy, a bit too tight in places, and that's just too many bits.)

In nearly two years, though it is of course stained, using it at the end of yoga sessions for the Corpse (or relaxation) Pose, and of course, every night for sleep, I have not had to wash it. The SLEEP MASTER is a paradox: it's delicate (that's why it feels so silky), so I wouldn't launder it, though others might try and succeed at it, but it's construction is tough enough to have lasted this long for me.

There is everything soothing to me about The SLEEP MASTER, except the price which is a bit much, but I sleep so easily using it, and it lasts so long, that it's worth the price--and more--to me, though maybe I shouldn't admit that last part online where retailers or resellers might see. (Gee, you think...)

Customer Review: Best mask I have ever tried!
Summary: 5 Stars

As promised after trying this new mask for a few weeks I am writing a new review.

First of all I would like to address the worst review of this mask which apparently people are marking helpful. The lady she got mold in her mask after 4 days of wear which made her allergies flare up. Absolute rubbish. She goes on about her favorite mask being closed cell foam or something like that and provides a link to it. I suspect she knows the seller of the other mask. I actually ordered the other mask she speaks of when I ordered the black version of this mask several years ago. It was no where near as good or comfortable as this mask. Secondly I also have allergies to mold and have never had a problem with this mask and the materials of the mask are clearly written on the card that came with the mask if she had bothered to look. There is no foam in it. The inside is cotton.

The mask I had from a few years ago was the Black model which they no longer sell. The only real problem with that mask was that if you sweat the black could bleed a little on to the pillow case. I finally got around to reviewing the mask a few months ago and stated that was the only problem. At that time the owner of the company emailed me after reading my review and appologized to me for the problem. She said this was a probelm with their supplier and had switched to the blue material for this very reason and was sending me a new blue mask to replace it free of charge! Now that is good customer service since I had not even contacted the company with a problem.

After trying out the blue mask for several weeks I can tell you that there is no longer a bleeding problem and I have no hesitation in giving this mask 5 stars. It is more confortable and blocks more light than any other mask I have tried. It is true that a very small amount of light may get in around the the bottom of the nose but I have never tried any mask that did not do that. It is very minimal with this mask however, better than the others I have tried.

Don't expect the sound muffling feature to be of much use. It will block about as much sound as pulling the blankets over your head. If you want to block sound use ear plugs. The free ones included with the mask are my personal favorite and I order them 200 at a time. (different manufacturer) Together this duo is unbeatable if you have to sleep during the daytime. I also black out my windows since I am a shift worker and have to often sleep during the day.

The mask is also hand washable and I recommend you do wash it fairly regularly to avoid getting dust mites in it, just like you would with your sheets and pillow cases. I actually wash mine in the gentle cycle and have not had a problem. Just make sure you close the velcro strap first or that can fray the outside if left open.

In conclusion I would say you really cannot go wrong with this mask. Great mask. Great customer service. What more can you ask for?

Customer Review: SON WITH SLEEPING DISORDERS SAYS MASK IS "ADEQUATE"
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my son as he has very serious sleeping disorders. Mostly circadian rhythm problem. We have tried just about everything over the years. Dr. said best room temperature for sleeping is 68 degrees. We do that. In fact, I do that for myself too and it does make a difference.Sleeps some during the day so black out room. Unable to do that right now. (Thus sleeping mask is needed). Bought him a Tempurpedic mattress (this helped greatly and worth every penny. Also bought him the Tempurpedic pillows and he says he will never sleep with any other kind of pillow now, he loves them). We tried several of the cheaper copy cat kind but they were not the same, unfortunately. Dr. said, "make sure he has plenty of light during waking hours". Dr. prescribed a light machine but insurance wouldn't pay for it because in New Mexico, they say, we have plenty of light. Wrong. Not if lots of trees and one small window with northern exposure. Bought him machine for "white noise" rainfall, etc. If room is too quiet, it is difficult to sleep. That made big difference too. Sprays lavender (aromatherapy for relaxation) on his pillow. He takes Melatonin tablet at time to sleep. These help too. Whew, it's been a job! LIGHT is biggest remaining problem, other than sleeping with 4-5 toy poodles (which remains unchangeable), so I bought the mask. It was more expensive than most, but then it is a patented design and there is more to it. I bought 2 other masks, one for me. The other to put in freezer for sinus headaches. He tried them and the nose areas let in too much light as he has larger nose than me. This mask, he says, feels better, only lets a tiny bit of light in at bottom nose area. He likes it too because it covers his ears and gives him a "comfy" feeling and drowns out louder unwanted noise. He still sleeps with a pillow over his head which he has done since a child and he still will not stop it. I thought the mask would help him stop that but it hasn't so far. Also, I thought when it said the mask interior was cotton fabric I thought that meant the inside side was cotton. It is not . It is all a very soft satin, inside and outside. I guess they meant the interior inside the mask that plumps it up. No big deal though. he uses it and likes it and that is something! The first night he did the velcro too tight and his ears were sore the next day. He has fixed that problem by not attaching it so tightly. While it does not bother him too much that there is no space to keepthe mask from touching his eyes inside, it would bother me, thus, I chose a different, less expensive mask. I am wondering for 'fitful' sleepers if a fabric other than soft, slippery satin would be better to keep the mask in place with less movement and sliding down? Just a suggestion. The seamstress, designer in me talking. Being a young man of few words , and slow to get excited about many things, my young son says this mask is "adequate". That is a good review from him.

Customer Review: Inferior Design, Worst Sleep Mask Ever Purchased
Summary: 1 Stars

I've used sleep masks for many years, some good, some not so good, but this one is, without hesitation, the most poorly designed sleep mask I've ever had the misfortune to own.

The problems I've faced are:

1) The rough side of the velcro that holds the mask closed faces your pillow, so if you do not have every last part of the velcro covered it will stick to your pillowcase if you lay on your back. When you go to move it "rips" off the pillowcase it has become stuck to. This noise will probably wake you up; if it doesn't the fact that the mask, which has become stuck to your pillowcase, twists on your head as you roll over and no longer keeps the light out as the nose cutout now resides on your temple will wake you up. I would imagine that only those people with small heads can have the velcro completely covered, if your head is normal or on the larger size, you'll have a significant amount of velcro showing and not only be awakened, but ruin your pillowcase, as this sleep mask has done mine.

2) Because of its design, in order to keep the mask on the entire night as you sleep, you have to velcro it pretty tight to your head. I've had several masks that are like that and usually it's no big deal, but because of the poor design of this sleep mask, if I make it tight enough to not fall off or spin around my head it pushes against my eyes fairly hard and when I awake my vision is blurry for usually more than 30 minutes and my eyes hurt because of the pressure against them all night long.

3) The assertion that the mask muffles noise is simply ridiculous. Unless you strap the mask so tight to your head that your eyeballs are being shoved backwards into your brain, you will notice absolutely no sound reduction. Even when you have the mask as tight as it will go, it still does not reduce noise in the least. This is a false assertion and was one of the main reasons I purchased this sleep mask, only to be very disappointed.

4) Finally, the ridiculous assertion that this mask helps us "ladies" keep a lovely hairstyle as we sleep, is laughable. The direct quote from their website is this,

"And, for you ladies, we've all heard the saying 'Nothing looks better on a woman than a good night's sleep.' Sleep Master actually keeps your hairstyle in place during sleep! Wake up, take off Sleep Master, and you are ready to go...No bedhead!"

Sleep Master's assertion only holds true if flat on top, with a band of squished hair across the middle of your head, then flat at the bottom is a hairstyle which you covet. This sleep mask hardly helps you maintain your out-of-the-stylist's-chair hair style while you doze, like it asserts.

Please give a great deal of thought before wasting your money on this sleep mask. My suggestion would be to stay with a more tried-and-true model, for this one is a complete fallacy from start to finish.
