Customer Reviews of Revolutionary, Patented SLEEP MASTER Sleep Mask

Customer Review: Not as good as hoped, but at least better than standard cheap airline type.
Summary: 3 Stars

This mask has a nice smooth silky feel, it is slightly on the heavy side which can sometimes make it uncomfortable if you blink or squint while falling asleep. The fabric seems to get rougher and start pilling as use goes on which I do not like much. The thing I like about this mask is it is very big and covers the eyes a decent amount so not a lot of light can get through from your cheek level or upper forehead like a standard cheap mask would. I also like that it is big enough that it hasn't accidentally fallen behind my bed. The design needs some small improvements and then I would give it at least 4 stars. The major major thing I dislike about this mask is that the Velcro on the back is very thick and it makes a lump right on the back of the mask that is uncomfortable against my skull when I am trying to sleep on my back on a firm bed, the lump is bad enough - that sometimes I get annoyed with 'wearing' the mask - and instead unfasten the mask and just drape it over my eyes (which means if I turn over in my sleep the mask detaches completely. The other point (though not as annoying) which really bugs me is if you toss and turn in your sleep the mask tends to slip off very easily, the fabric has part to do with this, and the other factor at play here is most likely the fact that the mask has no hard form to it so the nose divider tends to easily slide off the bridge of your nose and you end up with the eye portion of the mask suddenly on the side of your head! The company should really make the following changes: slim down the back of the mask so it has less fabric and less thick Velcro / is softer; find a slightly lighter fabric which is more durable and does not start to pill after slight friction (i.e. if I accidentally rub the mask against the exposed brick wall near my bed), add some form of rigid structure to the nose bridge, perhaps add some form so there is less friction with your eye lids, consider adding some concave form to the area of fabric that overlaps with your check bone - this would help keep out a lot more light, if I try going to sleep when someone else in the room needs all the lights on - I still notice light leaking in from the cheek area - just enough to bug me and keep me from falling asleep fast. All in all I am disappointed with the mask, as I looked at the ample glowing reviews here before buying and had higher expectations.

Customer Review: Great sleep aid--well worth it despite minor downsides
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, the effect of this product on my sleeping was instant and amazing. I have never used a sleep mask before, so I was a little apprehensive about wearing one, particularly after reading some of the criticisms below. I tried the mask for an afternoon nap the day I got it. It felt mildly odd when I put it on for the first time, but it was very soft, comfortable, and adjustable, so I got used to it almost immediately. I had a great sleep that afternoon and have slept beautifully ever since. (Not the case before I started using the mask.)

The mask really blocks out the light and the padding muffles sound well, but not completely. That's actually a plus to me, because it blocks out just enough sound to remove distractions, but no so much that I can't hear my husband, the alarm clock, etc. I suspect that if you used the earplugs that come with, you could really block out almost all sounds, if that's your goal.

It's also easy to slide the mask up and on your forehead and back down onto your face; you don't have to completely remove it or re-Velcro it to temporarily look or move around during the night.

Now, to the downsides. Because of the padding, the mask can get a little warm over the course of the night. However, in spite of being warm-natured and living in a warm climate (Texas), I don't find it at all uncomfortable. I don't even notice that it IS warm until I take it off--and suddenly my face feels cooler. So I'd agree with those reviewers who remarked on this point, but unless you are really, really warm-natured, this shouldn't be a dealbreaker.

Also, I did notice some of the black rubbing off on the pillowcases. However, the black washed out completely and the problem also seemed to diminish after the first washing of the mask. (I cautiously hand washed the mask in Woolite and let it air dry and that seemed to work well.) I'm guessing this is a problem of fibers rubbing off while the mask is new, but even if it's not, the improvement in sleep is well worth this minor inconvenience.

In short, if you're hesitating buying this product because of the problems noted in some of the other reviews, in my opinion the plusses far, far outweigh the minuses.

Customer Review: Best sleep mask I've found yet.
Summary: 5 Stars

Finally, a sleep mask that isn't like every other one out there and that's a good thing! I've tried many sleep masks over the years (currently have 4 different ones), searching for the perfect mask. I think my search has finally stopped -- this is the one.

I'm a side-sleeper, so many of the thicker/larger sleep masks get in the way, especially if I'm rolling over to switch sides in the middle of the night. This mask's wrap-around design doesn't have an edge to catch the pillow when I toss & turn. I was afraid that it was going to be too thick from the pictures, but it's actually not despite being well-padded. The wrap-around design also helps with this aspect. I also worried that I'd sweat with such a thick mask & living in the tropics. Not an issue. This mask breathes very well, much better than thinner masks I've used.

This mask's use of velcro instead of elastic is brilliant! I have a smaller head so many of the elastic masks would barely hang on and would slip off after I had tossed & turned a bit.

So, what would I change? Two very minor suggestions for improvement -- Some light does leak in at the bottom...that said, I don't see it unless I open my eyes and look as far down as I can. Not an issue, even when taking a quick siesta in the hammock on the sun-lit patio. The second is that the sound reducing properties of the mask are minimal. It does knock out some of the higher & mid frequencies. It'd probably be able to eliminate traffic noise at a hotel, but probably would only reduce the noisy air con or people slamming doors in the hall. With an audio engineering background, I'm not sure that they could design something comfortable and thin that could attenuate noise like earplugs or earmuffs could.

Take my "cons" section with a grain of salt, as these are very, very, very minor issues and in the case of sound attenuation, comes down to the laws of physics.

Customer Review: foul smell makes it virtually unusable
Summary: 1 Stars

I have no idea how others could like it. The smell of chemicals is so strong that I couldn't bear with it after 10 min. This is clearly a problem of the heavily chemical laden manufacturing process. The label says it is made in the US, but it makes me wonder. Certainly it looks and smells like Chinese made. In that case, this item probably would cost under $1 to manufacture and should have a retail price around $5. And if you ask me, I know what I'm talking about and I know how sub-substandard and polluted the Chinese manufacturing process is. It isn't a matter of Chinese's manufacturing ABILITY (you know they could put a man in space and make high-speed bullet trains that US currently can't); it's all about the standard, awareness and concept.

But made in the US? Can you prove it? I would expect something better if it is made in the US. Did they even check the manufacturing process? How about a smell test first? Do they realize this is put over one's nose? Heavily chemical laden. If I try to like it, my nose can't.

Other things about this product are okay. Not outstanding, but okay. Wearing is reasonably comfortable, although not superb. Light-blocking is fairly effective. It leaks light from the opening above the nose, but I wasn't expecting total darkness. The material is reasonably soft, but don't expect natural silky feeling. It is just artificial material that has a reasonable quality. I don't like its color, but that's subjective, and I don't rate it low for that reason.

And finally, I expect that some will hate this review. But please, if you don't smell, don't fault others because they can (unless your job is to watch out for this product here). I don't tend to write harsh reviews. Just look at the other reviews I wrote.

Customer Review: Major design flaws make this sleep mask of little value
Summary: 1 Stars

I found this product to work less effectively than a $3 sleep mask I bought at target. Here's why:

This sleep mask has no elastic band to hold it in place. Rather it has two Velcro strips on the material which you wrap around your head and attach at the back. What this means is that once you put it on it cannot dynamically adjust to your head should it move slightly in the night. The result of this is the mask slips up or down your head it does not stay tight. Like most people I have a somewhat spherical head, it is biggest around at my ears and tappers off towards a dome at the top of my head. I put the mask on and go to sleep. If my movements in the night cause the mask to move up a little it it is now around a part of my head which is smaller and it quickly becomes loose and basically falls off.

A simple redesign could alleviate this: On one of the two Velcro straps put a short elastic strap so that there is a little give.

The second issue is that it is loud! There is material covering your ears. The intention of this material is to muffle noise, but the material moves against my ears as I roll around and I hear a loud noise from the fibers in the cloth rubbing against my ears. A simple change in the material could make this quieter.

To resolve those two issues with the mask one has to wear the mask so tightly it can't possibly move. To wear it so tightly causes headaches and discomfort. Additionally if the mask is so tight it puts too much pressure on my upper nose that I can't breath properly.

In my opinion one is better off to consider a different product.
