My husband has taken Knock Out numerous times and all it has done is what it's supposed to - knocked him out and given him a full, uninteruppted night of sleep.
I, however, had a frightening experience with it. The first time I took a full pill, I slept for fourteen hours. Given that I have three children and a working husband, this was not an ideal effect. So the next time I took it, a couple of weeks later, I took a very small amount of the pill - about 1/5 of a full pill. I fell asleep fine and didn't feel like I was being drugged - just normal readiness for bedtime.
About three hours later, at 2:30 a.m., my three-year-old woke up yelling for something to drink, which happens every month or so. After hearing her on the monitor, I staggered - literally - into the kitchen, unable to keep my balance. As I was rounding the corner to their hallway, I misjudged my location and crashed into the pantry door, which was slightly ajar (it's a folding door). I hit it hard enough to cut the skin and bleed in two areas, and three days later the bridge of my nose is slightly swollen.
After finally making it to my daughter's room and taking her sippy cup to refill it, I stumbled to the kitchen and took out the milk. However, I couldn't seem to coordinate getting the cap off. I know I never did make it back to her room with milk, because in the morning the cup was still sitting on the counter, empty, and I vaguely remember falling asleep standing up at kitchen counter.
But the worst part was that after this happened, I stumbled into my bedroom and tripped on the laundry basket sitting in the hall at the entrance to our bedroom, then fell asleep for the next FOUR hours half-sitting, half-lying in the position in which I fell. My body's position was akin to how someone might be stuffed into the trunk of a small car. Needless to say, I was in a lot of pain the next day.
All in all, I consider myself fortunate to have escaped with relatively minor injuries. When I think of what could've happened - if I'd encountered any household items that are potentially dangerous, like knives, or if one of my children had needed me for something serious and I couldn't even manage to walk back to my bedroom to get my husband - I think I was rather fortunate. But the experience still terrified me - it had far more negative potential, and it *did* cause me some major physical pain/discomfort.
I'm not sure what ingredient it is that I reacted so strangely to. I've taken plain melatonin before and actually didn't find it all that effective, but never had any strange side-effects, so I'm assuming it's the theanine or valerian, or perhaps just a combination of all the ingredients.
Regardless - I feel duty bound to share my experience so that others can be warned. If you want to try this medication - and I know it can work; my husband and my mother-in-law have both found it really helpful from time to time - then by all means do so. Just know that it's possible you might not react well to it, and make sure that you are in a safe environment when you try it, preferably with another person around (and definitely don't take it if you have young children) and your spouse isn't around).
That's my two cents, for what it's worth. Proceed with caution.
