Customer Review: Handy dandy magnifier

My heart goes out to the person who doesn't understand that *all* reading magnifiers, fresnel or otherwise, require some distance in order to bend light to the benefit of the reader. Holding a lens right smack up against a page won't do diddly for you. Sorry, but that's just the laws of physics. Granted, that these babies are made of flexible plastic can be a negative for this particular task, but there are still quite a few tasks for which these light-weight, almost-paper-thin wonders are well suited:

- If your boyscout thought your 3" round magnifying glass was a handy-dandy solar fire-starter, wait till he tries focusing 8-1/2 x 11" of concentrated sunlight at a 1/2 inch dot. That's 12x the solar power, mind you. Those bugs won't know what hit them.

- Wanna do long-range flash photography? Make a DIY "Better Beamer". (google it)

- Poor man's projection TV (these were popular back in the '70s)
