As the name implies, the gargle's ingredients are simple. So, why does gargling with salt water relieve sore throat ailments? The answer isn't as simple as you'd think. Sore throats hurt because they are inflamed. Usually, the inflammation is due to a viral or bacterial infection, such as the common cold or streptococcus. However, sore throats may also be related to allergies or physical injury to the throat. In each case, an inflammatory response has been triggered.
