Customer Review: Warning - "flushing" doesn't really describe it

Different people can react differently, and apparently many people have no problem taking Slo-Niacin. But I just wanted to warn others as to what *can* happen, since it took me completely by surprise. I had been told that niacin can cause "flushing," which I took to me some redness of the face. What I did not suspect was that one day (about 3 hrs after taking the pill) I would be sitting in my chair and my back would start to feel as it was on fire. Soon afterward, my entire body, from head to toe, was red and burning. It felt and looked like the worst sunburn you've ever had, only more so. It tingled and itched; my skin was hot but my body was cold and shivering. I was so scared that I went to urgent care. They had me chew a couple of aspirin, and whether because of the aspirin or on its own, it went away after about an hour. If I had known that all of this was a possible side effect, I wouldn't have freaked out so much. I didn't even know for sure that it was the niacin -- that was the doctor's opinion -- because I had been taking it for two weeks without a problem. I thought I might be having some kind of mega allergic reaction to god knows what. We speculate that there may have been a defective pill that was not "slow release," and perhaps that is why I was able to take it for two weeks without a problem. So, my beef with Slo-Niacin is its failure to fully disclose possible side effects. For all I know this is otherwise great stuff, and for most people this kind of side effect would not occur. But be prepared for the possibility.
