Customer Reviews of Slow Fe Slow Release Iron Tablets 90-Count Box

Customer Review: About the packaging...
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using these iron tablets for a few months, and while I feel better, I do not have blood results back on their effectiveness. I do want to discuss the packaging since so many people complain about it, even if the product inside may be worthwhile.

This package is similar to the over the counter Claritin -- individual blister packs in sheets with a perforation between doses. With 2-3 bends, the package can be torn (I won't use the word "easily", but it's not too hard either). I've used scissors on it when I've been in a hurry and had them handy. Taking the pill out of the blister pack, they're normal paper backed aluminum. If you don't use your thumbnail to lift up the corner of the paper so you can pull it back, you're probably going to have a hard time getting to the pill. Lift the paper out of the way, then punch the pill through the aluminum foil and it's done. All said, this probably takes me 15 seconds before every meal -- take a sheet out of the box, bend bend tear one side, bend bend tear the other, lift the paper, punch the pill through the aluminum, discard the wrapper and put the rest back in the box.

I've never had stomach problems for what that's worth, but then again I'm a meat-eating male with an iron deficiency, so my body is coming from a strange place to begin with.

Customer Review: Very good product
Summary: 5 Stars

I am iron deficient and quite close to anemic. Other products were very bad on my stomach but this one has been great.

The only weird thing is that I've been more hungry since taking it. It's strange. I'm not sure if it's speeding up my metabolism because I have more energy now. It might be a combination of me working out more as well. I'm not sure.

For me, though, the slow release has given me more energy. I used to need a nap/coffee nearly every four or five hours. I haven't napped or had as much coffee since starting to take it. At one point, it got so bad that I need five cups of coffee to wake up.

One drawback is that I've had so much energy I cannot get to sleep as quickly as before. Sometimes I stay awake for an hour or so before I'm able to sleep. That means I only get about 5-6 hours of sleep. I've needed to drink a little coffee every morning to get going. Last weekend when I was able to sleep a little longer, I didn't need the coffee. I woke up alert and fine.

I haven't taken the iron at the same time everyday. I'm not sure if that changes the potency. I do take it with orange juice as the Vitamin C helps with the absorption. I highly recommend this product.

Customer Review: Great product (no complaints!), *horrible* packaging
Summary: 4 Stars

My wife was recommended Slow Fe as a pre-natal iron supplement.

After getting over the mild surprise at the cost of this in our local grocery store, we soon found out Costco - and Amazon.com - carry it at far more reasonable prices. Amazon's subscribe and save beats Costco prices, as with many other products.

We have no complaints about the product. It was recommended by our Ob Gyn, and my wife has not come across any noticeable side effects.

Its the packaging that I rate a 1 star. My wife refuses to open these packages, and passes on the task to me. I have no idea who made these child proof designs - children, in fact, may just be persevering enough to wrench these blisters open, adults on the other hand face quite an ordeal. At least I did, every day.

I ended up with a "batch mode" - when my wife gets a new box of Slow Fe, I sit with a box cutter and open up the entire lot. Takes about 30 minutes of focused cutting. I put them all in a medicine container, and we are good for the next 90 days.

What a company! To come up with a product that is this well received, and not pay attention to any of the consumer complaints about the packaging!

Customer Review: Much better than when I last tried it ten years ago!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have chronic iron deficiency anemia, and I always need to take supplements. I tried Slow Fe nearly a decade ago and couldn't tolerate it. Instead, I took Ferro Sequels, which was a slow release ferrous fumarate, I believe.

Well, I was in a pinch at the drugstore, and decided to give Slow Fe another try. See, I can always find Slow Fe on the shelves, but few stores near me stock Ferro Sequels, making it increasingly rare to find.

Now, they do say 'new formula'. So I'm not sure if their active ingredient has changed over the past ten years or so, or if my body simply tolerates it better now, but I've been on them for a week (twice a day is my dosage) and I'm just fine. In fact, I've decided to go with this brand, and subscribed to it today.

Moral of the story is: if you tried it years ago and it didn't work for you, might be worth giving it a second chance.

Oh, though I agree the packaging is terribly! Honestly, can't we get a bottle? Please?

Customer Review: Fabulous product, HORRID packaging
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the only iron product that many people--including me--can tolerate. It is substantially more expensive than many other iron preparations, but I don't mind paying extra to avoid the awful side effects associated with those. (AMAZON'S PRICE, however, was better than my local Wal-Mart or CVS.)

I DO MIND VERY MUCH that the manufacturer ignores customer reviews that talk about the terribly inconvenient packaging. Why should loyal customers who are willing to pay more for the product be subjected to trying to wrest these tablets from the packaging? Perhaps people with small children or mentally incompetent people in their households prefer such packaging, but why can't a plastic bottle be made available to the rest of us?

Thanks, Amazon, for friendly pricing. Boo-Hiss, Novartis, for your ongoing disregard of your customers' preferences.
