Customer Reviews of Smooth Awayâ"¢ Hair Removal System - As Seen on TV

Customer Review: Great for finer hair & less sensitive skin...great exfoliater too!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm really happy with how well this product worked for me! Easily removed hair from my arms, legs & face after first attempt.

Pros:
=======
1) Convenient: now you don't need to shave only in the shower or have to apply lotions/cremes when out. Perfect for removing sporadic patches of hair. I love using mine in front of the TV and for quick touch-ups.
2) Painless: is not plucking and no sharp edges. Smooth texture gently buffs away hair...which it probably is doing because it's like a very very fine sandpaper.
3) Gentle: I bought Smooth Away largely in part for removing embarrassing peach fuzz on my face but wasn't sure if I would have adverse reactions. Threading & facial razors would give me small razor bumps and even a bit of small pimples. So far none with this product.
4) Exfoliates: my skin is much softer after use. I didn't even know I needed exfoliation on same areas until after I used the product. ...so I even decided to use it on areas of my face that didn't have hair to remove!

Cons:
=======
1) Pads probably last for 2-3 (both arms or both legs) uses max and constant refills might get pricey. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5.
2) Best for taut areas of skin.
3) I haven't tried it but would probably advise against using on underarms or bikini areas.

Usage:
=======
I followed the directions exactly, using small circular motions 3 times each direction and on dry skin hair. Found it lifted hair rather effortlessly with new pad and just slightly more force for used pad.

Disclaimers:
My hair is fairly fine to medium in coarseness. Not sure if this would work for thicker hairs. Also, the length of my hairs were short 1/8" to 1/4" inch (directions say hair should not be longer than 1/4" and I can see why)

Bottom line, try the product if you really want to despite the negative reviews. However, it may not work for everyone or maybe even the majority of the people based on the ratings. In my case I'm so glad I discovered a new favorite product :) If you're not sure you want to spend the money, you can try it for cheaper on eBay (make sure to get the original) or at Bed Bath and Beyond for about $8 with a coupon. Careful though, as I did read some people experienced redness and burning! So if your skin is sensitive beware. My skin is acne prone but luckily I didn't get any pimples or redness.

Hope this review helps.

Customer Review: Works if you are really, really patient
Summary: 4 Stars

I used to use these things a long time ago before this company marketed it. I bought them out of the Vermont Country Store magazine and I believe Sally Henson even has a version from awhile back. Anyway, here is my take on it: Do not use until "all the hair is removed". You will give yourself an abrasion-type rash...akin to dry shaving. Use it a little each day, literally the three circles back and forth that it states and then put it down! Use it on your face as you would an exfoliator, then put it down! I think it is hard for us to stop, especially when the product tells us we don't have to, and then the rash is so insidious...creeping up on you, perhaps not until you have put the lotion on...ouch! If you have sensitive skin, perhaps you feel this after you shave anyway, or right when you get in sea water? Why would it be any different with this product? Use it sparingly and gently (do not apply a lot of pressure)...or perhaps between waxes to break down the skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs. I think though, you will find if you increase the usage to a level where your skin has adjusted you will do fine with the product. I will say though, I don't know if it faster than shaving...but certainly more convenient! I have used it on my face and got "the rash" but then I decided to do it more gradually and now I am able to do it better. Something you may not think of but if you use any product with retin-A or a retinoid, your skin will naturally be much more sensitive as that is an exfoliant, too. Same with alpha-hydroxy acid as it thins that top layer of skin to remove the dead cells. So you are setting yourself up for pain, embarrassment, and disappointment. You need to factor in your skin creams/regimen not just if your skin is "dry and clean". Perhaps this is why others have been injured? If you use it responsibly, it should work well for you and also prevent further hair complications...those who suffer from ingrown hairs and perhaps even keratosis polaris (bumpy, red, plugged hair ducts) if you use it carefully, as it would help from the outside of the follicle, you may just find it improves the appearance of your skin. Good luck and buy it here as it is WAY cheaper than at any other drug store -- I don't think it is worth the retail $9.99 price.

Customer Review: It works... once.

Short Review: Do not buy. This is not the hair removal product you are looking for. *Makes Obi-Wan hand gesture*

Long Review: I had seen this on TV and threw the BS flag at it, but thought what the hell, I'll give it a go since it was a gift (my mom got one for each of us). Being a Greek girl I am no stranger to hair... dark, OMG LOOK AT ME!! hair... and having my arms tattoo'd I'm always shaving them. So it was with a bit of hesitant hope that I tried this product.

BZZT. Failsauce. Thing doesn't work well at all.

Oh, it works at first, yes. I read the directions thoroughly and went step-by-step with extreme care, following every step perfectly. As I began to rub, I got very, very excited - it was working! Not only that but my skin felt great. Yes, it leaves a white film on your skin but one wash and that goes away and leaves you with smooth, hairless, baby-booty skin. Sounds great, right?

Well it would be if the pad would last beyond the first use. The pads are essentially sandpaper downgraded into something skin-friendly. They have no lasting power whatsoever. So unless you plan on buying enough replacement pads to wallpaper your entire home, don't bother. Seriously. By the time I did both arms the pad was spent. Maybe I'm a freak and have stone skin like The Thing from The Fantastic Four but really, I doubt I'm the problem here.

Also, a word of warning to anyone wanting to try this on their face: Don't. I used the little one on my upper lip and it did nothing. I also tried using the bigger pad on my wannabe sideburns; it, too, did nothing, and then I guess I got a little ticked off and started to rub too hard because about 10 minutes later I had a severe case of red face disease. That was unshiny and burned for days.

Sigh. Back to the drawing board.

Customer Review: This thing is magical!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I see that people gave this product a terrible review overall but I can't say that I aggree at all!!!
I was skeptical and left the box on my counter for weeks before I finally gave this thing a try. I hadn't shaved for over a month so I was sure that this would just be another reason that this product wouldn't work.
So I sat down on my couch and started smoothing away. And OMG this thing is like MAGIC!!!!! All my hair was gone AND my legs were so soft that all I wanted to do was keep rubbing them.
Not sure if I have special hair or if the length of my hair made it work better, but I just can't say enough good things about this product thus far!
Now I haven't used it on my lip or underarms; so I will see if that is a totally different experience. But for my legs I can't say that I have ever used anything that is better at getting my legs hair free along with the BONUS of having the softest skin on earth afterward.
But don't take my word for it. If you know someone who has one then ask them their opinion and ask if you can try it out for yourself. Not every product made is awesome or perfect or works for everyone on the planet. So don't just take my advice, which is way extreme of most people's reviews on Amazon, or go by what the few others have written negatively about this product. Try it out and see if it works for you. I know that Nair doesn't do a thing to the hair on my body but that doesn't mean that it doesn't work for anyone.
Trying is believing, weather it be good or bad.
But, again, I have to say that this is AWESOME and hope that I will always have access to purchasing new pads because I never want to have to shave in the shower again!!!!

Customer Review: OK, but not for everyone
Summary: 2 Stars

I got the 2 for 1 deal off the TV and my mother was dying to see if it worked so I gave one set to her. She raved about how well it worked and admitted "it's not as close as shaving" but she enjoys the fact that she can remove her hair while watching TV or whatever else she wants to do (given that she has a free hand to "smooth away").

My mother has thiner, lighter hair than I do, so I figured it worked for her but wouldn't work as well for me. I tried it about a week after my mother did and was surprised that it did get rid of MOST of my leg hair. However, if you are one of those people who's hair grows in in all different directions (as mine does), it does not make your legs feel smooth when touched. Immediately after I used it, I touched my legs in a downward direction and it felt smooth enough; but going in an upward direction, my legs felt as if I had shaved them yesterday afternoon (very slight stuble). Also a note to people with dark body hair: you will still have those dark "dots" where your hair is under the skin (as you do with shaving, but more noticable). This product does not make and keep your legs "smoother for longer than shaving," I used mine last night (a little over 12 hours ago) and my legs already feel like fine grit sand paper.

I think this product would be ideal for someone with thin, light body hair who is not as concerned with their body being smooth so much as their body appearing hair free.

Like I said, my mother (redhead) loves it and has already asked me about ordering replacement pads; but for me (brunette) is not worth the money and effort.
