Putting it politely, this thing can wake the dead. The tone and volume are adjustible and set (im)properly can sound roughly like a cross between nails dragging across a blackboard and a cat being fed into a meat grinder. Combine the bed shaker and a volume control that can be turned up to an ungodly level and you're not going to be the most popular person in the dorm...but you'll never miss an 8am class again. Just don't turn it on on weekend mornings.
For normal sleeping people, the volume can be turned down and the bed shaker disconnected.

We got this alarm clock for our 88 year old dad for Christmas. He sleeps without his hearing aid, so is quite deaf. The Sonic Boom alarm would wake the dead! The large display of numbers is great for the elderly who often don't see well, especially since he sleeps without glasses, too. The only problem with it is that the buttons for setting the alarm are very small to see and too difficult for dad's 'bear paws' to be able to set it for himself. If Sonic Alert fixes that problem, this clock becomes the 'user-friendliest' wake-up call for elders.Customer Review: I could sleep through anything!

Finally, an alarm clock that can wake me from the dead. The bed shaker works well by itself. If you're really tired, the added sound alarm can be tuned to your favorite annoying pitch and then adjusted from gentle to robust volume. The visual display is clear and large enough to read with bleary morning eyes. The only inprovement would be to add a second alarm time. The population of AD/HD folks who need to wake to take meds and then wake again in an hour or so to actually get going would really be helped by that feature!Customer Review: SB 300 Used as a silent alarm

I get up earlier than my wife. We're both heavy sleepers. I've had the alarm-snooze-button circus going for years. She used to sleep through it, but doesn't anymore and it was driving her insane. So I got this unit and set it to vibrate only. I have the little vibrating thingy on my side of the bed and I can carry on with my snooze button circus without bothering her! Only complaint is the unit itself is too big and too "tip-py". I wish it was smaller and on a much more stable base. Anyway, it solved my problem.Customer Review: still can't wake up

This clock is wonderful for the medium type sleeper. My son can NOT get up on his own with ANY type of alarm clock including his ipod connected to an amplifier! I bought this clock to try. It initially does wake him him, however, I should have gotten one with a "dual" alarm. He forgot to put the sound on once and only used the vibration system under his pillow. It did wake him, however, he went right back to sleep. The sound is very loud and I can hear it in the other room. Just not good for the sleeping dead!
