Customer Reviews of Sonic Boom SBB500ss Sonic Bomb Loud Plus Vibrating Alarm ClockCustomer Review: It works! Summary: 5 Stars
Well I'm 16 years old and the hardest thing to do every day is wake up and get to school. I had a "regular" alarm clock for a long time which did absolutely nothing. I then decided that, eventually, I may NEED to get up on my own! I scoured the internet and, of course, Amazon.com had what I wanted (at the cheapest price after doing research).
This clock does exactly what it says; Set the alarm for any time and the buzzer will "shake" your bed and the very loud alarm will scream you awake! You can set whether or not you want the buzzer and the alarm to go off, just the buzzer, or just the alarm. You can also adjust the tone and volume of the alarm, which I thought was cool. The big button along the top is your sleep, the 2 rollers on the right are for the volume and tone, and the 2 sliders on the left are to select what you want to go off and the brightness of the clock display. Everything works great, it's easy, it's fast, and, most importantly, it wakes you up! No matter who you are, I really REALLY doubt you can sleep through this.
Some cons would be it is indeed a *very* simple product. There is only 1 alarm as opposed to the seemingly new norm of 2 or more. IT DOES NOT HAVE A RADIO. Not that you really need it for a device like this. When they made it they had one concept in their mind: Wake people up. No fancies, just wake them up! Which works...
Now after about a week I started just hitting the switch as soon as it went off and drift swiftly back to sleep. So I suggest after that first week put the clock somewhere out of reach so you have to get up to turn it off. It will still wake you up.
The cord for the shaker is nice and long, and the shaker itself rocks. It's very small but shakes like crazy! If you've ever sat in one of those vibrating chairs (not a massage chair with the rollers, but one that shakes very rapidly and violently) it's like one of those shrunk down into one tiny little ovul container.
Overall a very good product! I haven't had it for a really long time now so I'm rather curious as to how long it will last.
*UPDATE*
I have now had the alarm for many months now without a single problem. It hasn't broken and everything continues to function properly.
Customer Review: This will wake you up Summary: 4 Stars
I've had a history of sleeping through alarm clocks. This past summer I lived with a few other people and they would come into my room in the morning and yell at me, because my old alarm would wake them up but I would sleep through it, despite the fact that it was positioned right next to my head.
While I do not believe this alarm reaches 113 decibels or that it is louder than a jackhammer, I will say that it is much louder than your standard alarm clock. The vibrator works very well and is guaranteed to wake up even the deepest of sleepers. You can put it under your mattress, which will cause the majority of it to vibrate, or you can place it against a solid object which will cause a loud vibrating noise. I opted to keep mine under my mattress.
Many people have posted that their units burned out or that it kept time incorrectly. This is because they failed to look at the directions. In the directions that come with the alarm clock there is information detailing a switch on the backside of the unit. It is labeled 24hrs 50hz, 12hrs 50hz, and 12hrs 60hz. This switch not only controls the time format(12 hour vs. 24 hour), but also controls the tuning of the internal electronics. In European countries, 24 hour time format is standard, and wall outlets alternating current runs at a frequency of 50hz. In America, most people use the 12 hour time format, and our electrical outlets operate at a frequency of 60hz. What this means is that if you have this switch in the wrong position, you run the chance of damaging your unit, and you will notice that the time will not be accurate(it says this in the manual).
The only thing that keeps this alarm from getting five stars is the face that I can't use the 24 hour time format. I live in the US but work on a military base and have become accustomed to the 24 hour time format.
tldr; This alarm will wake you up, just make sure to read the manual or you run the risk of incorrect time and a fried alarm clock.
Customer Review: Best Alarm Clock I've Ever Used Summary: 5 Stars
I used to have a problem with getting up in the morning. Sleep deprivation due to classes made me immune to any kind of audible alarm. Even with a 100 decibel alarm blaring in my ear for an hour, I would still be deep asleep. I saw this clock and figured I'd give it a try. It works perfectly - I have not slept through this alarm once.
I keep the vibrating pod under my pillow, and it feels like there is a jackhammer on the other side of the pillow when the alarm goes off. I keep the siren turned off so I don't annoy my roommate (the siren is extremely loud and obnoxious).
Pros:
* The vibrating pod is extremely effective and will wake even the heaviest sleeper.
* The siren is obnoxiously loud and annoying, and is a good compliment to the vibrating pod.
* You can choose to use the siren only, the vibrating pod only, both or none.
* The display is large and easy to read.
* There is a backup 9V battery (not included) that will keep your settings intact when the power source is unplugged.
Cons:
* The snooze is 9 minutes, which is a bit long. There is no way to change it.
* You have to set the correct voltage before plugging it in. It wasn't a big deal for me, but I have read accounts of others 'frying' their clocks because the voltage was set incorrectly.
I highly recommend this clock. If you're a college student who has a hard time waking up, this will be the best $25 you ever spend.
Customer Review: Definitely worth buying if you're a college student! Summary: 5 Stars
I had done a lot of research and tried to find an alternative to my basic alarm clock, which I was letting go off multiple times until it finally dismissed them all. I ended up coming across this and actually came across a friend who is half deaf that had purchased this product. He had great reviews on the product so I decided to buy the alarm clock. Overall, it's been great! My roommate no longer hates me in the morning =] The vibe is actually pretty loud, I know that my roommate can sometimes hear it across the room, but it's very faint (especially compared to a ringing alarm). I had read several things about the alarm quitting if the settings were not accurate. I made sure to read the directions carefully and have yet to experience any problems. I sleep with two pillows- one regular and one heavy feather pillow on top. I put the vibrate part under my regular pillow and have no problem feeling it. Another plus is that the cords are very long so if you aren't very close to an outlet, that helps. I know I kept the twisty ties and tied up the excess to make it look a little neater. Once again, I definitely recommend this product. I actually signed up for an 8am class and made it there on time everyday compared to oversleeping too many times to count the previous semester. I am an extremely heavy sleeper - slept through an earthquake and tree falling on our house and this does the trick if that tells you anything! :)
Customer Review: No more sleeping through class Summary: 5 Stars
I don't have any hearing disabilities, but I AM a heavy sleeper, and before I got this I could easily sleep through fairly loud alarms.
Not anymore. I've had this for 6 months and I haven't slept through it ONCE. Of course, at 107 decibels (volume adjustable), it's loud, but if you don't want to wake the neighbors the vibration disk (under your pillow) is FANTASTIC. I will warn you, it WILL scare you for the first couple of days, but you quickly adjust. Not only that, but it flashes yellow lights when the alarm goes off! Only a video will do it justice- google "Sonic Bomb" and you'll find some good examples.
I haven't had any issues with build quality, alarms not going off (it's a hard switch, not soft- so it's easy to see), etc.
Minor cons: Wish it was atomic (self setting with time), must make sure that switch is in the right position (if you put it on the 12h 50hz switch and you're running on 60hz US power, you're going to be several minutes off within 24 hours), somewhat bright screen, even when the switch is in the "low" position. No timeout on alarm (make sure you disable the alarm is off when you leave your room for more than a day, or you're going to get your neighbors busting down your door to turn it out)
Fantastic alarm, highly recommended for any heavy sleeper. It's well priced and I can't thank Sonic Alert enough for making it.
