We recieved the Thumb Guard 2 weeks ago and my 5 year old has quite the thumb completely! She was a true addict, sucking all day long every day. The guard is nice and soft silicone. This size was actually too big for my petite 5 year old. I should have ordered a small as she weighs less than 38 lbs and is about 38 inches tall, therefore she was able to wriggle her thumb out but we kept putting it back in. I did have to lay down with her at bedtime to make sure she didn't take her thumb out but she was able to fall asleep in under 10 minutes. It took about 12 days for her to no longer suck. For two nights, I painted her nail with Mavala while she was sleeping in order to remind her not to suck when she woke up in the morning. MAVALA Stop for Nail Biting and Thumb Sucking So far so good. We are planning the celebration party and she couldn't be more proud!
**A huge word of caution though. We did this in the summer with constant pool swimming, beach trips, and hot days. She got a couple significant blisters underneath it. Oddly she said they didn't hurt, so I think they were a reaction to the moisture and silicone. Bandaids and Neosporin helped.

I was a little skeptical about this product since a lot of reviews said "your child has to want to quit". My 6yr old did NOT want to quit sucking his thumb. We'd tried every bribe under the sun, this guard was the last resort. It worked great. The first night was hard, he cried himself to sleep and I even caught him with the whole thing in his mouth while he was sleeping, but after that first night he was fine. He's a very active 6yr old boy, this hasn't hindered his play at all. He can do everything like normal. Lucky for us it's his left thumb and he's right handed (not sure how that would go if he had to write with that hand). He doesn't even really notice it's on most of the time, no kids have bothered him about it. He's had it on almost 3 weeks now, we're going to stop wearing it in a few days. My husband and I both think after a few days of wearing it the habit was broken. I just really want to be sure before we take it off for good. The paperwork and video it came with recommended 4 weeks at least. I feel confident when we take it off at 3 weeks he will not suck his thumb anymore. Great great product! I ordered this item for my 5 year-old daughter who has been a thumb-sucker her entire life (I even have a sonogram picture of her sucking her thumb!). We had tried rewards, punishments, bad-tasting polish, nothing worked. Until this device. She has not sucked her thumb now in about a week - with the true test being at night before she goes to sleep.
The pros - it's flexible and the child can do most things normally. It's not overly comfortable, but it's not horribly uncomfortable either. The straps adjust easily.
The Cons - my daughter figured out how to create suction on the device simply by pushing it down around the base of her thumb fairly quickly. I then made a modification to the device (which I am not going to list) and solved that problem immediately. The other thing I didn't like was it became discolored after only about 3 days of use. It started out clear and then turned a yellowish brown for seemingly no reason that could not be washed out - it's like the plastic itself was permeated. Plus, with normal wear and tear the top got a few cracks in it. So if you are looking for something that is going to look o.k. for a full month - this probably isn't it.

My daughter is 4.5 years old and had sucked her thumb since birth. She recently became very self-concious about her habit. She couldn't understand how the other kids at preschool were able to just close their eyes and go to sleep without sucking their thumb and she asked if I could help. We tried a few different versions of the bitter nail polishto no avail, so I did a little research and found the thumb guard. I was hesitant to order it due to the price but am so glad I did. She wore it round-the-clock for two weeks and after that she wore it to bed for just one more week. She told me that she didn't need it anymore after the three weeks and since it was her decision to stop sucking her thumb, I felt confident that she was ready well before the reccommended six weeks were up. She has not sucked her thumb in 2 months. One downside to this product, at least with my daughter, was that it left her skin raw in a few places. I remedied that by placing band-aids over those spots on her hand after I had washed the thumb-guard and before it was re-attached. This product has been most helpful. Our daughter has been a thumbsucker since in the womb and we have tried numerous other techniques to get her to quit. All of which resulted in stress and fights.
The thumbguard ended all that. She liked being able to pick the color of her band and it wasn't too much of a struggle to get on. The first night it was hard, but when we combined wearing the thumbguard with a reward sticker chart it was a breeze.
It is clear, but whenever I cut it off, I would put it in a kitchen cupboard with the bands. We never lost it and she didn't try to hide it because she wanted her special rewards (ice cream, date with daddy to Taco Bell, money for coloring books. )
I wish we would have found it before starting Kind. as I would have had her wear it all the time, but since she had started school, we have only had her wear it at night.
The only negative, I wish there would have been more bands.
