Customer Review: Don't Waste Your Money

I've bought 6 or more of these heating pads -- one for myself, a few years ago, and others for friends and relatives.
My original heating pad finally gave up the ghost (the switch went) and I bought what was supposed to be the same pad to replace it.
I've used the pad for more than a month now. The cover is thin and harsh and inconveniently larger than the pad under it. The old cover was soft and was closely bonded to the pad, and the plastic underneath was soft and flexible so that the pad adjusted to body contours. The plastic -- the real pad under the cover-- of this pad is thin and stiff -- if you need to bend it around a sore shoulder, forget it. It will stand away from any part of your body you're not lying on. I suspect the heating wire coverings are thin and stiff too -- I can really feel them through the pad when it's in use.
The original pad heated up in moments and held its temperature, and the different temperature really were different.
The new pad, set on high, takes 20 minutes to heat to something less than lukewarm, and can hangs on barely detectably warm for another 20 minutes to an hour or more -- when it suddenly heats up to the frying point and hangs there for a few to several minutes, then back to barely warm. The one other temperature grade I tried never got beyond barely warm before the pad turned off.
Oh yes, the automatic shutoff (very important to prevent fire). The old pad turned off, reliably, when the time it was supposed to stay on was up. This pad turns off in an hour or four or anything in between.
The cord is board-stiff and seems inadequate for the current -- it often gets way too warm.
All in all, a shocking and shameful degradation of what was once by far the best heating pad ever. Yes, it cost $50 until a couple of years ago (when I bought the most recent gift pad). And it was worth it. This one might be properly valued at the $5.97 I paid at Big Box about 3 weeks before I got this Sunbeam pad (in a sudden emergency). The Big Box pad works slightly better, actually -- at least it doesn't suddenly start frying.
Shame on you, Sunbeam. Why do you think anyone would buy a Sunbeam product after this kind of degradation and deception?
