Customer Reviews of Sunbeam Health at Home King Size Heating Pad with HeatSense Technology, Grey

Customer Review: What makes it good for me, may make it bad for you
Summary: 4 Stars

I'll explain my review title, this heating pad is constructed with about 13 wire type heating elements that are all arranged traveling down the pad widthwise in one direction. What this does, is make the pad curl very nicely in one direction, which it curls up lengthwise due to the way the cords are all running widththwise. The cords are rather stiff but do soften up a bit once it gets hot.

This works perfectly for me because I wrap this thing around my calf and achilles tendon and it'd work great for wrapping around an arm or a leg. The pad doesn't curl up widthwise very well, but like I said, that could be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on how you want to use it.

It gets hot enough for me, but I can imagine that for some it would not be hot enough for what they want to use it for. I'm not some kind of wussy when it comes to heat or anything just to clarify, but I'd say that the pad reaches a nice therapeutic level of hotness. Overall, for me I really like this pad and am very satisfied with it.

One thing that needs to be mentioned though, is that the entire surface of this pad doesn't heat up. The last 2 inches or so on each side lengthwise and the top and bottom inch going widthwise do not contain the heating wires and do not get hot at all. You can see clearly in the photo of the item where there are rumples, this is where the wires are and the smooth parts of the pad contain no heating element at all and do not get hot. So it's not a full 18 inches that you're getting when it comes to heating surface.

Customer Review: Sunbeam malfunctions
Summary: 1 Stars

I have had to purchase 4 of these heating pads in the last year and a half or so, I will not purchase another. Some sort of a problem develops with the controller. When I try to turn it on, the light just blinks and the pad does not heat up.
In October 2009 I purchased the fourth one. I was very careful to keep my receipt this time. Today it has quit working. After trying to work with Sunbeam to replace the third unit last October I decided to purchase the fourth. Other things were going on and I did not have the tim to try to deal with it. I should not have to take a 6 month old heating pad in for service. Does this seem absurd to anybody else? Well, there obviously is something defective with these heating pads so I will not purchase another one. Hopefully, I can get the two that I still have repaired or something. Otherwise they will end up in the trash like the first two did.

Sunbeam had me go through a reset procedure with the third that did not affect the operation of the pad. They also asked if I had used an extension cord or power strip with it. I had and told them so. Evidently using an extension cord with these can cause damage to the unit.

I am on my way to the store now, and definitely will not purchase another Sunbeam!!

Customer Review: Excellent right away
Summary: 5 Stars

Great size, easy to operate, very comfortable even warmth right out of the box. Even comes with a case that can be used for travel. Soft gray large pad that is a perfect size. Highly recommended so far. I have read of some failure/breakdown of various pads. There can be defects in anything but look at the numbers. Our heating pads are used almost every day so time will tell soon if it is unworthy of 5 stars, and I will update, but we usually get about 2 years out of a pad with almost daily use, and then some wire breaks down. At $31 for this, it only costs about 4 cents a day, not including electricity, for 2 years; 8 cents a day for one year. Worth every penny. When you think of what it has to do, the pressure and the flexing of hot electrical wires, it is challanged. For those that complain about longevity I suggest a non-electrical heating pad, but you will get gel, microwave, cloth breakdown eventually, as well. Stick with a name brand product, and buy from a reliable company, such as Amazon or Costco where they really want you to be satisfied, and allow returns. Also, fast shipping with Prime, and 1 day for only $3.99. No, I am not associated with any retailer; just a consumer.

Customer Review: I love it...
Summary: 5 Stars

This heating pad is great because it is not plastic with a cloth case. I don't like the plastic heating pads that come with an outer cloth cover. They get way too hot and start out far too cold. They also come out of that cloth cover (constantly) and have rather sharp edges on them. This one is really nice because it is all cloth. When you need to clean it, just toss it into the washer and dryer (after you've removed the power cord of course). I use my heating pad all of the time because I have cold feet and a bad back. I use it in the bed to warm the bottom of the sheets before bed, and I use it throughout the day to relax my back muscles. It has four heat settings with an auto turn off after 2 hours. I've owned four of these so far (because of the near-constant use). They last me about 2 years each which is a LOT of hours of heat!

Customer Review: Terrible, awful, very bad product
Summary: 1 Stars

I gave this one star only because zero stars is not an option.

The heating area is 11 x 9. King Size it is not.

The first three heat controls (warm, low, medium) are very low. The high is super hot.

You cannot successfully adjust the heat unless you are looking at the control, because there's only one button and unless you look at it, you can't tell where you are in the cycle.

The things turns off too soon -- but it doesn't really turn off: The heat goes off, but the pad is still using electricity.

Worst of all, the cord twists and turns back upon itself so tightly that it's probably not safe. It's a real hassle to get the cord straightened out.

This is a terrible product. I'll be careful about buying any Sunbeam product from now on.
