Customer Reviews of Swash Steam It Out 10 Minute Clothing Tumblers, Single Pouch (14 Pack Bundle)Customer Review: High-fallutin' dryer sheets, but better than I expected Summary: 3 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
(This is a review for Swash "Steam It Out" 10-minute clothing tumblers, pre-moistened freshness sheets. I'm clarifying this because there are multiple Swash products.)
I jumped at the opportunity to try these because I'm slow about taking things to the dry cleaners, and loved the thought of extending the wear of my silks and woolens before they'd need dry cleaning.
I suspected this wasn't a good match as soon as the package arrived: I did not like the smell. This is even before actually opening the packaging... the package smells to me like something in between a dryer sheet and most detergents.
I also erred in that I misunderstood what this product is. I think it's really a lot like a dryer sheet; the extra is that it's moist. (The tagline for this product is informative: "wear it again. we won't tell." Thus, if you use these in a standard dryer, you get not only the scent-coverup function of a dryer sheet but also some of the benefits of steam. But I really don't need the latter as I already have a steam dryer.
Instructions:
Once you open the package for an individual sheet, you get a folded handi-wipe type thing that seems to have some alcohol in it. I'm guessing about that because it's not listed on the ingredients, but maybe that's the "preservative". The instructions don't say so, but I'm pretty sure you should unfold the sheet. And then into the dryer you go, along with about five articles of clothing. (The instructions say 1-5, but if you put only 1 in, I'm not sure it's going to tumble very well.) 10 minutes of drying time.
Results:
Okay, my beloved readers, I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be pleased with the smell, but for you, I grabbed a couple of silk sweaters that needed to go to the cleaners, a turtleneck sweater than I usually machine wash, and a couple of pairs of jeans and followed the instructions.
The scent after "freshening" was not strong at all! Much less offensive to me than the in-package scent. The dry-clean sweaters came out well, and yes, I think I could get another wear out of them. Jeans are also fine, but they were mostly filler for the dryer; they'd been worn but I wasn't aware of them smelling bad. (Unlike the previous reviewer, I often wear pants two or three times before they go in the wash.) The turtleneck, however, which is a synthetic of the sort that holds onto smells for anything, is still holding on. Didn't seem to help the turtleneck at all.
My hands, however, still carry the stronger scent, which is ick to me, and my laundry room is the same. Of course, many of you are using similar scented laundry products, so will not be bothered by this at all. (My laundry detergent is BioKleen, with a faint citrus scent... I just don't like heavily scented things.)
Pros:
1. Will impart a faint "just-laundered" scent onto your clothes, if'n your usual "just laundered" clothes smell like dryer sheets or fabric softener. Depending on how skanky your clothes were to begin with, this just might work for another wear before washing/cleaning them.
2. I am comfortable using this on my knit silk and woolen sweaters, skirts, and dresses.
Cons:
1. I'm not sure this is actually any better than just "freshening" with a regular dryer sheet.
2. I would not use this on silk blouses that are not machine wash (generally, the shiny silks do not launder -- they'll lose the shine and often their vibrant color).
Note:
This is not actually cleaning your clothes. It's just making them smell better. (And the dryer tumbling might get some wrinkles out.) It is not a substitute for dry cleaning or a proper washing.
Cautions:
1. Don't go throwing your dry-cleanables into the dryer willy nilly. Some fabrics do not like heat, and some will not like the combination of heat and moisture that this represents. I think if you wouldn't consider hand washing the item, you shouldn't use this product with it. (From the extensive information here on the Amazon page: "Not intended for tricky garments (like silk or velvet) or those that should not go in the dryer.")
