Customer Reviews of Swiffer WetJet Spray, Mop Floor Cleaner Starter Kit (Packaging May Vary)Customer Review: Makes more mess than it cleans Summary: 1 Stars
My mother bought one, then mysteriously passed the unopened box to me, asking me to try it and tell her what I think. Well Mom, and the rest of you... It causes more problems than it solves.
1. It leaves a smeary, dull film on my vinyl floors. The user manual advises using more solution. So I tried that...
2. The solution is strongly scented with a perfume I found obnoxious. More solution = a stronger, longer-lasting unwelcome smell, and yet my floors remain streaked and dull. I read that Swiffer offers a citrus-scented alternative, but that's only available in an antibacterial formula. Did you know that anti-bacterial agents are deactivated by contact with organic matter, a.k.a. dirt? They're for killing germs AFTER you've cleaned. I use them only for their intended purpose and only where they're actually indicated, such as on food-prep areas. Overuse of anti-bacterials produces resistant strains of bacteria and will not get your house clean.
3. I had to change the pad before I got through one room. Okay, I missed last week's mopping, but I don't keep livestock in the house... my floors were not excessively dirty. The pad is too wimpy. And refills are expensive!
4. I was very attracted to the built-in solution sprayer. But the spray is very attracted to my furniture, walls, and feet! I couldn't spray the recommended amount of solution around furniture and walls without getting solution on them.
5. I found the sweeper cumbersome to use. I like the mobility in the cleaning head, but the unit taken as a whole feels unbalanced. And I couldn't get the leverage I wanted when using the scrubber head. The spray button is positioned so that sometimes when I grasped the handle, I accidentally grasped the button and sprayed solution willy-nilly!
Finally, I shudder to think of the landfill waste this product produces.
I can say one good thing about the WetJet. It has a ring at the top of the handle for hanging. I like that... If I were going to use this product, and if a pad were still useable past one floor, I'd want to leave it in place for the next use, but I wouldn't store it sitting on the floor. I would hang it up to dry if possible.
Customer Review: I Need A Twelve Step Program! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, I admit it: I'm addicted to Swiffer products. I own just about everything they've come out with and am pretty darned happy with them. This item, the Swiffer Wet Jet, is my hardwood-floor-saviour ...but not without some issues.
First is that hardwood floors are a bit of a pain to keep up. They show dirt, grime and streaks readily, so you have to be willing to sweep, re-sweep, and mop on a fairly regular basis. If your floors are really dirty, then you'll be going through Wet Jet replacement pads quickly (something I've learned). The pads are great for what they are but once they get any significant amount of dirt on them, they rapidly become useless. They will streak your floors mercilessly and you'll scream in dismay at how terrible they look. Do not fret. What you need to do is sweep (I use a Swiffer Max Sweeper) ...and sweep well. What I do next is use the Swiffer Vacuum Sweeper (yes, I double-sweep ...I told you I was addicted!). Then, if the floor looks free of debri, I pull out the Wet Jet.
Now I need to get the floor wet. Really wet. So I put down a good layer of the solution by holding down the spray button for about 3 seconds. I start mopping. And I don't mean just lazily spreading the solution around on the floor. I get my back into it. Scrub. Scrub. I go over trouble-looking areas two or three times. I scrub some more. If my floors were really dirty, I change out the pad frequently to prevent streaking. After I've finished, I don't walk on the wet floor. I let it evaporate. The smell of various solutions is nice and not overly strong (at least it wasn't for me).
After the floor has completely finished drying, I look at the floor from different angles. See streaking? That's where the pad got too dirty and couldn't pick up the grime so I just pushed it around on the floor. I re-mop the trouble spots using the Wet Jet. And scrub. Scrub hard. Now I look again. I don't see any streaking or grime.
Mopping needs will depend on how much dirt is tracked into your home, so if you've got a high volume walk-in area, it'll need Swiffering more frequently than you might like. But I don't mind it. Like I said, I'm addicted.
Customer Review: Granted, It's Not As Good As Sex, But... Summary: 5 Stars
My first Swiffer Wet Jet finally broke down after three years of use, not bad for a product that you can buy here for $18.99, and usually find even cheaper in stores.
Since I live in Guatemala, I had to wait months for a new one to arrive. Now, I am the furthest thing from a "neat freak," (as mom would readily attest) but I certainly did miss it.
Although, only when I walked...
Even though I had to pay an extra $26 for shipping and customs, it was still an incredible bargain.
Not only are my floors finally clean again, but I don't procrastinate doing them like I did when I only had a useless old mop.
While waiting for the Wet Jet to arrive, once I did try smearing filthy putrid water from a mop bucket, and I swore never again. I just let my floors get dirty until the Wet Jet finally came.
The criticisms I have read here are ridiculous. People actually complained because they have to sweep the floor before they mop?
How lazy can one be?
I would hate to see the filth on their floors if they never even sweep before they mop!
Yes, the cleaner does spray out a few inches in front of the mophead. I couldn't imagine wanting it any other way. If you are trying to hit a particular spot, just step back a few inches, dude.
Duh...
It is best to first sweep with a broom, then go over the floor with the Swiffer sweeper which statically attracts hairs and fine particles that the regular broom misses, and then finish with the Wet Jet. Three passes, but mopping with the Wet Jet is just as easy as sweeping - no bending, no wringing, no mess.
Just put it to the barefoot test and you'll be amazed. Walk around before and after it dries, and you will cannot help but see and feel the difference on the soles of your feet.
I also have some allergies, but the cleaner doesn't bother me at all.
The only negative is that you can go through the floor cleaner quickly, and it is not cheap. However, the pads are hardly a significant expense.
Thank god I got my Wet Jet back!
Customer Review: Not That Effective Summary: 3 Stars
I received the Swiffer Wet Jet in college a few years ago. I still use my Swiffer, but not for any big jobs.
The Pros:
-The batteries last a long time. I've only had to replace the batteries once since 2003.
-The spray feature is nice because 1) you don't have to bend over since the spray button is on the handle and 2) you can control the amount of cleaning fluid you use fairly well. Don't you hate when you mop and soapy water covers the entire floor? That's not so much a problem with the Swiffer Wet Jet.
-The cleaning fluid lasts a long time.
-The Swiffer Wet Jet works fairly well between deeper cleanings.
-Unlike others on Amazon, I like the smell of the cleaning fluid. It's refreshing.
The Cons:
-The Swiffer tends to push dirt to the corners of the room rather than pick up the dirt on the pads. While the pads catch some of the grime on your floors, you'll need to remove the pad, get on your hands and knees, and wipe up the excess that the Swiffer pushed to the edges if you want a more thorough cleaning. Even though this is a hassle, I still think it's more convenient than mopping.
-The pads attach to the bottom of the Swiffer by velcro. The velcro stops holding the pads after about a year. At least it stopped working on mine.
-The cost of the pads and the cleaning solution really do add up after a while, although you have to expect that with any mop that you'll need to purchase accessories.
-Each pads gets used up really quickly. On my bathroom alone I use two to three per cleaning and I only live with one other person.
-I have long hair and I shed a lot, so the Swiffer just can't tackle that. If you have long hair or animals or a lot of kids, the Swiffer Wet Jet won't take care of all the hair and dirt you leave behind.
The Swiffer didn't live up to my expectations. I thought it was the lazy woman's solution to cleaning floors, but it turns out some work is required. Darn!
I'm off to purchase the Swiffer Sweep + Vac because it mops and vacuums.
Customer Review: Don't be fooled by the "black" pad Summary: 1 Stars
I used this on my tile floor -- granted, it doesn't say it's for tile floors, but I thought I would give it a try. The blackness of the pad was impressive.... at first, but then I decided to do another test. Taking a clean pad IN HAND, I squirted some of the solution onto ONE tile -- a tile I had already cleaned by the way. Oddly... there was some "dirt" there, but on closer inspection of that tile, I also saw a couple of little tiny black dots embedded in the nooks and crannies of the tile. Hmmmm. So.. using now, a clean rag, I sprayed the tile with "LA's Awesome", and made it squeaky clean. Took yet ANOTHER pad, sprayed the tile with the wet jet solution... and it was blackening once again.
I had noticed in the weeks that I had been using the wet jet that the grout in my tile was getting darker and darker. I finally got down on my hands and knees and did a really close-up inspection of my tile. Black streaks here and there. So... the wet jet wasn't picking up the dirt -- it was smearing it around and leaving it in the grout, and the nooks and crannies.
So, I cleaned my floor and scrubbed the grout with LA's Awesome and then did the wet white-papertowel test: A little water, go over the tile... it remained white.
I now have 'redesigned' my wet jet: I take a microfiber washrag, fold it in half, and stick it to the bottom of my wetjet. I then spray the floor (not with the swiffer solution) and wipe it with the rag. Peel off the rag and rinse it in the sink. And if you can't stand dirt on your hands, wear gloves!
I don't know what's in that swiffer solution but in my opinion it has something in it that reacts with the pad and makes it turn black, and makes you "think" it's doing something.
I take pride in having a clean house, as many shoppers do, and have no qualms about scrubbing my floor the old fashioned way -- on my knees! Swiffer has great marketing... but that's about it.
