Customer Reviews of Tanita BC554 Ironman Glass InnerScan Body Composition Monitor Elite SeriesCustomer Review: Real Motivation Summary: 5 Stars
The challenge when using the TANITA BC554 is figuring our WHEN to get readings. As all readings come about through an electrical charge running up one leg and back down the other, anything and everything that might influence that signal will have an effect.
[...]
Once you log the VELONEWS data and start taking readings "properly," you're set to go.
Now I have to tell you, the BC554 has motivated me (and my wife) like nothing ever has. Even if you "fight" with the readings, you will find yourself thinking carefully about fat% and visceral fat, about bone density and the % of muscle your have, etc.
Frankly, I've yet to experience anything as motivating as this unit for (a) general health and (b) prepping for a triathlon.
Yes, we have given our unit a name... "Sadie"... short for "Sadie Stalin the Sadistic Scale"... but we love her.
And are far healthier as a result.

Customer Review: Tanita BC554 Ironman scale Summary: 5 Stars
I did not realize I had not reviewed this. This is an awesome scale and for the first year I used it daily to keep all my body composition stats. Not only could I see and feel the difference in my body, but the scale gave me the numbers to show the improvement.
I was training for a marathon and this along with a food diary I kept help me shed 20 lbs of fat and lean out to 9% body fat. I was in great shape.
After the marathon, I took the winter off (not completely, but the workouts were much less intense and the diet was much more enjoyable) and gained almost 15 lbs back. I did not use the scale much then, but when I went to start my training again the scale would only read weight. I cleaned the contacts, but no luck. I called Tanita and explained to them it was only a year since I'd had it and they replaced it.
Now back in shape and the scale is still working fine.
Customer Review: Ironman scale packs a lot in a stylish package! Summary: 4 Stars
I can't verify the dead on accuracy for anything but the scale function, but you can easily use the other values to reference progress in your diet or physical fitness program. It's easy enough to program, but you will need the manual the first time through. Subsequent use is simple - just touch your "personal" button (the scale can track several people), wait for the pound display, and step on the scale. Various things can affect the fat readings, such as putting your hands on your hips, touching something else while it's scanning, and state of hydration. I don't think you should live or die by the numbers, but you can tell if things are getting better or worse over time. Some day I would like to have all the measurements done in a doctor's office and then compare the results with this scale. Would recommend - especially if you're into useful gadgets.
Customer Review: Rock solid, great features Summary: 5 Stars
NOTE: I bought this almost two years ago (see Amazon verified purchase link)
I had a Tanita I bought in 2000 and I loved it. It seemed to last forever until my housekeeper drowned it. I tried to buy a cheap replacement (the name escapes me, see my other reviews) and TOTALLY regretted it. I paid the extra money for this after reading the reviews and based on my previous experience with the brand.
Almost two years later I'm 100% satisfied with this scale. it's attractive, functional and sturdy. I haven't done the research to see what options are out now - maybe there is something newer/better. But this works perfectly for me and I expect it will continue to do so until my new housekeeper has a brain fart.
I highly recommend this model and the brand.
Customer Review: Excellent for trend analysis with a life of a year or two max Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased my first scale and really enjoyed it. It was mainly used for trend analysis. I enjoyed it so much that when my daughter needed a scale I bought her one. Within a year or so the display went out. The unit appeared to be functioning, just the display was not working right. I changed batteries with the other scale with no luck. I was upset that I couldn't get Tanita to replace so I used my daughter's scale when she stopped using it. That worked well for another year or so until the display went on the fritz in that unit as well. Great unit during it's life cycle. Good for trend analysis. Expensive to use especially since the units don't last more than a year or two. I'm purchasing a less expensive scale that will provide me the information I need at a lower price point.
