Customer Reviews of Tanita BF679W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor with Body WaterCustomer Review: Tanita BF679W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor Summary: 4 Stars
Reliability or consistency in measurement is probably the most important factor when comparing home bathroom scales. The Tanita BF679W is a reliable scale. If one weighs with these scales and then reweighs a short time later, the results are the same or very similar. I have no basis for evaluating the accuracy of the scales other than to note that they tend to underweigh you by a few pounds when compared to professional scales in doctors' offices.
In addition to weight, you get a reading on percentages of body fat and total body water. Other reviews have suggested that these readings may not be accurate, but they are at least useful for observing the amount and direction of change for any given individual, particularly if records are kept. There is provision for storage and review of the data for two people for immediate comparison with previous readings.
The scales are relatively convenient and easy to use. The digital readouts are large enough to be seen. If weight only is desired, tapping a button on the base of the scales makes that possible. The only improvement I would suggest would be to increase the length of time the readouts are shown.
Customer Review: Good Scale for the price Summary: 4 Stars
Excellent scale- ever since I bought it, I've been losing weight since I can accurately tell how much I weigh. It's a MUST for weight loss. I weighed 176 the day I got it, I'm at 157 right now.
As for the water percentage, it's worthless- as long as you're over 50% (for a male), your fine. It's related to the body fat %. The body fat % fluctuates too much to be that great. It's a good rough estimate- but I go from 16-19% depending on when I weigh myself. I find that I'm 16% when I follow the recommended advice (don't eat for 2 hours and then weight yourself), but that's definitely too low in my opinion. I still got a small beer belly. 19% seems more accurate and I get that after I eat. But the body fat percentage has definitely gone down since I lost weight, so like I said -it's a good estimate, but don't worry about 3% fluctuations.
I think the key with this scale is to note your lowest weight (in the morning when you get up, just do the weigh only option). That way if that weight goes down, you know you lost weight! And it's amazing how many pounds you gain right after your eat (clothes weight about 2-5 pounds depending on jeans/pajamas,etc.)
Customer Review: Why bother? Summary: 2 Stars
I longed for a scale that could actually be accurate for once. I was frustrated with the ones that rounded to .5 of a lb because I felt like the number always fluctuated between 1-2 lbs. So I did what most of you do and read review after review. I thought this scale would finally be the one scale that made me feel like I was progressing. Well...it wasn't. I can stand on it once, get a reading, stand on it again 2 minutes later and have gained 1.5 lbs. So I think to myself, maybe it's my body water...but that number hardly ever changes! As far as the fat monitor goes, I don't trust it and didn't really think it would change that much, but that number fluctuates too. For some reason I don't think I can have a body mass of 20 one minute and 18 two minutes later. Another note, when I move the scale to a different part of my bathroom floor I can lose up to 5 lbs! Isn't that amazing!?!
Needless to say, my parent's scale that they've had since 1973...the metal one with the dial... is the most accurate scale I've used.
Customer Review: Excellent scale; useless bf% Summary: 3 Stars
I did a dumbbell test with this thing using 30, 35, and 40 lb dumbbells; both by themselves and with me holding them as I stood on the scale. This was to test both how accurate it was, and if that accuracy varied by the range of weight it was measuring.
It was never off by more than .4lbs, and since my dumbbells might be off by that much, that tells me this is a very accurate scale. Day to day it will vary by just .2 lbs depending on how I stand on it, so very good for tracking gradual progress.
Now as for the bf% monitor, that's almost useless. It is off by ~4-6% compared to the naval circumference method that I use, and while that doesn't sound like much, it has remained at the same bf% level despite the fact that I've lost 14 pounds since I got it. So, as far as tracking gradual bf% progression, it's less useful than a tape measure and a calculator.
So I'd give it 5 stars as a scale, but took away two for making us pay for a feature that doesn't work (for me anyway).
Customer Review: Wonderful scale! Summary: 5 Stars
Doctor said "lose 20 pounds". I got a copy of a software program called FitDay that does a superb job of determining how many calories per day I should eat to lose weight at a safe pace. It lets you log everything you eat and also keeps track of exercise, etc.
A good scale is essential to weight management. We traveled through Alaska for three months. I used FitDay to control my calorie intake and used the Tanita scales to monitor my weight. First time I had ever lost weight during a trip. I started at a little over 250 pounds. Now am 223. Shooting for 180. The Tanita scale matches what the "good" scale at my doctor's office shows. It really helps to know you are getting an accurate reading. Took the scale with us during our motorhome trip to alaska and used it every day. It is small enough to be portable and accurate enough to be of real assistance if you are trying to manage your weight. Totally happy with this item!
