Customer Reviews of Tanita BF680W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor with Athletic Mode and Body Water

Customer Review: Lovely
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved my old scale, and things seemed to be working, but I was suspicious that it wasn't always being completely honest with me. So, I did what you do, and started checking out the ads on Amazon. You know, just to see what was out there. The Tanita's parabolic curves and cool symmetry immediately caught my eye, and I could hardly wait to get her back to my place and into my bathroom.

Tanita wanted to know all about me right away, or at least my age, height and if I was, you know, athletic. I gave my data, and she said she's remember me as number one.

I immediately fell in love because she said I weighed 1.5 pounds less than my old scale. Oh, flattery will get you everywhere. She told me about my body fat percentage, and let me know with a knowing minus sign that not only did I weigh less, but my body fat was lower than average. Owing to Tanita's considerable knowledge, I also learned just well hydrated I was.

I've found the results were consistent, and the she is easy to read, even at the crack of dawn when the rest of the world is blurry. Visiting Tanita in the morning I just give her a little nudge with my toe, and she chirps cheerfully and greets me with my height and age - just like all my friends. While she's open-minded and has room for another user's preset, I'm going to keep her all to myself for now.

Customer Review: Accurate, a must-own if you're trying to lose fat
Summary: 5 Stars

I use the caliper method along with this, and the results are always approximately equal. This scale won't give you your exact bodyfat, but the number it gives you is pretty accurate, which you can tell just based on looking in the mirror and going on the net and looking at what different bodyfat percentages look like, and more importantly it will tell you if your bodyfat percentage is going up or down. When I'm dieting and exercising properly, the number goes down by small increments each time. When I'm stuffing myself and not going to the gym enough, the number goes up. The negative reviews are from people who probably didn't follow the procedure correctly.

The weighing scale is extremely accurate, and you should take that measurement in the morning after you've used the bathroom and before you have eaten. The body fat measurement should be taken later in the day, and you shouldn't be full or food or water.

One tip: don't use the athlete setting unless you are an actual athlete, because it'll give you far too flattering a reading. If you are an active person who goes to the gym three times a week and does weight training and cardio, that does not make you an athlete. If you play sports for a few hours five times a week, then you can probably use the athlete setting.

Customer Review: This is a keeper!

I've had other digital scales and never been satisfied -- can't read them, they don't work on carpet, not accurate, etc. I've had this Tanita BF680W for over three months now and I can attest that the other positive reviews are correct. Here's what I like: I can read the display even with my glasses off; the scale is rock solid accurate as measured against professional models at the gym; I was skeptical about the body fat monitor, but it IS consistent even if not as accurate as other types of measurements; I can have my own preset numbers and my wife can have hers, too. Others have said the batteries last at least a year. Can't say, but no problem so far.

Here's what you might want to do: the literature says this works on carpet. Maybe -- if the wind blows in the right direction. But, I have no problems because I took an unused piece of wooden shelving and placed it under the scale so it is on a hard level surface. Between uses, I simply slide it and the scale under the clothes rack in the closet with my foot. Works great!

Customer Review: Nice scale, but doesn't seem accurate
Summary: 3 Stars

I wanted an accurate scale to watch my weight on a daily basis and also my body fat. I already owned a Health o meter digital scale, but it does not show body fat or hydration. Although this scale was "kinder" to me in terms of my weight by about two pounds from my current scale, my current scale was more accurate to my doctor's scale, so I have my "doctor" weight and my "this is what you should be" weight by two pounds. It's weird though, sometimes both scales WILL match and other days they are off by two pounds. Doesn't make sense. I really don't know if I can trust the body fat percentage either. There are times when I'm at a 25% body fat at a higher weight and then it will show a lower weight two days later, but a higher body fat. So don't know what to trust or believe. I do like the hydration number though because I can at least tell if I'm carrying too much water weight or if I need to drink a lot more water. All and all, the scale is okay for the money.

Customer Review: Worthless for Body Fat comparisons
Summary: 3 Stars

As others have stated, Body Fat calculations on this scale vary widely from one use to the next. Even when stepping on/off/on the scale, in rapid succession, my body fat would change by as much as 3.5%, rendering the 0.1% increments worthless. The values were usually within ±2.5% of my hydrostatic body fat results but I bought this scale for tracking weight/fat loss progress. Having my body fat display +3.5% from one day to the next does me no good.

Weight on this scale appears to be highly accurate... rarely fluctuates and it matches my doctor's scales.

I can't tell if the TBW (water %) is accurate or not. On this scale, it was usually displayed as being around 37% (again, extreme fluctuations with back-to-back weighings). Another scale shows me at 30%. I have no idea which is correct.

Since I can't use this scale for the Body Fat functionality, and it's overpriced for a weight only scale, I will be returning it to the vendor.
