Customer Reviews of Taylor 5599 440 Pound Tempered Glass Body Fat-Body Water Scale

Customer Review: funny => "Taylor: Leading The World In Accuracy"
Summary: 2 Stars

At Costco, I bought a very similar scale to this one (same brand, same deal). All about the box, there is promise of precision and functionality. I gave it a try.

Firstly, I'm actually trying to gain weight. My normal weight maybe 143-6, but I was a true 160 not many months ago, standing 5'10.5". So when I got the scale out and eagerly jumped on it after eating and working out through the week, I was shocked to see my weight 136. In terror, the week continued as I ate and ate, and I saw my weight go to 131. Looking in the mirror, I knew things were wrong. I examined the scale, I had had it on a small bathroom rug. I tried moving it to a more level surface. Just like that, I gained 8 pounds. I then read a bit more into the device, and realized it uses some pseudo-science that requires you to have your socks off. So, I obliged, my weight went down. After a hard day of work one day, I was 146 like normal. That's a 15lb, one week variation. Afterwards, I went to McDonalds of all places and ate a massive meal, something I do only very rarely. I came back and had lost a full 4 pounds. Comical. I'm convinced that the four feet of the scale are part of the weighing, and moving it *between 12" tiles* changes readout. Also, whatever reason the scale requires you to keep socks off, whether it reads your body temp or voltage or vibration/pulse in your feet, it is nonsense. Unless your metabolism/heart rate stays DEAD FLAT (dangerous, emphasis on dead), I expect this scale will vary widely. My variation is plain outrageous. The extra star (from a 1 star) is for me deciding to use it with socks off against my will. When during the day do you have socks off? After a shower, when you're wet/heavier. Or before, when you might rather not hassle with a cold glass scale. As an experiment I might blow-dry my feet and see what happens, or arc a battery across a foot, just to see its function before I plop it onto the return desk.

It's a pity, the scale looks very nice compared to most, esp the costco version.

Customer Review: Great for BMI readings for muscley individuals and as a regular scale too!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this scale for a couple of months and love using it to calculate my true BMI. I've also read that the method it uses for calculating is highly accurate (second to a $400 procedure involving an MRI type machine). Because I've lifted weights for many years of my life, I understand I'm going to be heavier due to the dense muscle, and the BMI output provides me with an accurate reading over the typical BMI calculation which simply uses height and weight. I've watched my BMI and weight go down in concert with one another and it is truly encouraging!

I also have a Wii Fit and it uses the simple calculation to figure out my BMI. This would be truly disconcerting if I trusted the Wii Fit's figure because I understand that muscle weighs a lot more than fat. The Wii Fit shows my BMI at over 29% and says "that's overweight" plumping my poor Mii into a larger body frame, all while she twists about looking at her larger proportions. I only shake my head because I know my REAL scale shows it at less than 23%.

You can also save the settings for up to four people so useful for a family, although the manual states it is not accurate for individuals under 10 years old.

If you want your true BMI reading and a great looking scale, this is the one for you!

**Update July 8, 2010

For quite some time, I've been dealing with the occasional "Err" message when I've gone to weigh myself. And now, I can't get on the scale without it saying "Lo". Sometimes, it will flash my weight for a second before it reads "Lo" - and sometimes, the scale will show that I've lost 3 or 4 pounds out of nowhere and I start to panic that I'm dropping weight way too fast. Then it will correct itself and its back to normal weight again.

I've been EXTREMELY frustrated with these messages and think that maybe "lo" means low batteries so now I'm on the hunt to replace them. I haven't reduced the star rating because its possible the batteries simply need to be replaced. We'll see!

Customer Review: Err1 - Defective after 1 month
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought the Taylor 5599 scale at local Target retail. It seemed like a decent scale for the 1st month, until it suddenly started displaying Err1 whenever I stepped on it. My previous Counselor brand scale worked perfectly for 20 years. The Taylor 5599 manual says Err1 indicates over 440lbs is on the scale. I can assure you I weigh far less than 1/2 that. From other reviews, it seems I'm not the only one to get the Err1 error. I tried removing the batteries to reset the electronics, with no luck. The scale has a lifetime warranty, so I called Taylor's customer service number (866-843-3905) and spoke to someone. There was no easy resolution to the Err1 error - perhaps a spring broke was the diagnosis. They would replace the scale if I'd send it to New Mexico...at my expense, of course. I might get a new one after 3-4 weeks (they blamed this delay on a backlog, and UPS - who can deliver overnight if you pay for it). They would not cross-ship me a new unit while the defective unit was in transit. The manual says NOT to return it to the retailer, presumably so the retailer doesn't know of the defective units they're selling. Despite this, I took the scale back to Target who readily exchanged my defective unit for a new one, without the original packaging or receipt. I've just validated the new scale works. My hope is the quality of the new unit is better than the last, but only time will tell. In the end, the scale looks nice and my hope is the new unit provides years of accurate weight measurement, but I'm not betting on it.

Customer Review: Very Nice!
Summary: 5 Stars

Very nice scale! I highly recommend choosing this scale over many others of a like kind. All the advertised functions work very well & it is able to accommodate larger individuals who weigh up to 440 lbs.

Over all a super nice scale at an affordable price!

Well done Amazon!

I have never even once been left disappointed in buying anything through Amazon.com & people need to understand this. If you do buy something through Amazon & something does go wrong they are super fast to see you 100% satisfied.

"Never fear buying anything here @ Amazon.com!!!

E-Bay: for example is ten thousand times more trouble if something goes wrong and 9 out of 10 times you'll be trying to see yourself satisfied @ E-Bay for at least two months before everything that can go wrong is made right & mind you that is only if you know the system like a master user & as we all know that's way to long to be bothered with any on-line purchase.

I'll say it again - Never fear buying anything here at Amazon.com

Thanks, Tony ...

Customer Review: Terrible Simply Terrible (product and customer service)
Summary: 1 Stars

Taylor 5599 440 Pound Tempered Glass Body Fat-Body Water Scale

Received scale and it looked great. Also worked great. Unfortunately it was for only 10 days. The scale then reflected weights varying as much as 10 pounds. I mean it was all over the place.

I put in fresh batteries. No change.

I then called Taylor customer service. I got a recording saying they had a heavy customer demand and that my call would be taken in order. I was given the option to leave my phone number. I decided to wait. After 18 minutes I gave up and pressed the keypad number to leave my phone number. I was then transferred to leave my number only to get a recording telling me that the recorder line was full. The phone then disconnected me.

I called Amazon and they are sending me a replacement.

Hope it works better than the orginal. I can understand a product breaking, what I cannot understand is such shabby customer service.

Buy With Caution,

Ray
