Customer Reviews of Taylor 5599 440 Pound Tempered Glass Body Fat-Body Water Scale

Customer Review: Worked fine for a couple years, and then crapped out
Summary: 3 Stars

This worked great when it was new - it gave consistent readings for weight and body fat, and I used it on a hardwood floor. Several months into use, it started to give ERR readings when I stepped on it. This lasted for a little while, and then it went back to 'normal' performance. A few months later, it wouldn't turn on when I pressed the buttons. I'd have to press them several times or hold them before the scale powered on. Sometimes the wait time between turning on and when it was ready for stepping on was very long. Mostly, it was just inconsistent.

Also, it has a nice sleek look, but the four little plastic raised arms on the top pop off easily if you, for instance, tap it wrong when stepping on or when you're cleaning the glass.

Overall, this product seems to work great for the first 6 months of use, and then it becomes incredibly inconsistent. I've had mine for about 2 years, and it's dead now - won't turn on at all. I would choose a different product if I knew it would last longer.

Customer Review: Became inaccurate over time - unreliable
Summary: 1 Stars

This scale appeared to work well the first month I had it. A few months after owning the scale, it started to show me losing weight (my goal was to gain weight, unfortunately) at an alarming rate... eventually, I got fed up with the scale and, using a piece of shelving to distribute the weight evenly, I placed a pair of 60 lb dumbbells (120 lbs total) on the scale to see what it would read. Sure enough, the reading was about 15 lbs too low. Taylor Scale=FAIL

I then scoured the web to see if there was a way to recalibrate or "zero" the scale. I looked over everything I could find on the company's website. I found nothing helpful and tossed the POS.

On a lesser note, I was also a little skeptical of the Athlete vs. Non-athelete bodyfat settings... I think the "athlete" settings were a few percentage points too low, and the non-athlete settings were clearly too high.

I'm an active 150lb 25 year-old male, and I do not approve of this product.

Customer Review: Are you serious???
Summary: 1 Stars

OK so a year ago I was not working out at all and my body fat was measured at the gym at 24%. After a year of working 3-4 times a week (mostly weight training, pilates, yoga) - I haven't lost any weight but got noticeably stronger and leaner, my clothes are loose. So I thought I'd treat myself to the home body fat analyzer. Checked the definition for the athlete (10 hrs+ per week of aerobics, 60 resting heart rate - not me) so I selected normal person. My body fat measured at 29.9%, second time at 30.4%! Are you kidding me??? Choosing being an athletic person it measured at body fat at 20.9% which seems to be more likely but definitely not by Taylor's definition of an Athlete.... So either you can kid yourself that you are an athlete and get a reading that feels good or get some kind of crazy reading that doesn't make any sense. Can not believe I wasted my money.

Customer Review: great accurate scale
Summary: 5 Stars

The scale is pretty accurate. I compared it with my salter 0.1 lbs accurate scale and their weight reading matched exactly. I always get consistent results for the other numbers every time I stand on it and the numbers seem to be correct.

On the down side:
1. The readings for the body fat, water and muscles are displayed right after each other 3 times. Each number is displayed for a second or so before the next number shows up. And they are not in order (top to bottom on the scale). It is kind of hard to catch all of them!
2. The scale also has a big foot print and the plastic seems like it won't look good after sometime.
3. I wish the manual included some guidelines on how to interpret the results.
Overall I am happy with my purchase. The downsides are minor so I am still giving it 5 stars considering its price.

Customer Review: Great scale, horrible battery life.
Summary: 4 Stars

I really like this scale. It works well, is simple enough to operate, and looks good sitting in the bathroom. I have a habit of weighing myself each morning and tracking my weight online, so this scale gets used once a day. I've found though that the battery runs out after only about 2 months of use - and it takes those expensive "watch batteries" that cost $4+ each. The batteries alone make this scale a lot more expensive than it appears. I don't know why the manufacturer couldn't have just made the thing operate on an AA or AAA battery, it would have been so much less expensive to operate and gone a lot longer on one battery versus the tiny watch batteries. If you buy this scale, consider the ongoing battery cost in addition to the up front scale cost. At $2/mo this scale will cost you an extra $25 in the first year.
