Customer Reviews of Telemergency ClearVoice 2000 Emergency Telephone with Wireless PendantCustomer Review: Fantastic features Summary: 4 Stars
This phone is for my 91-year-old, almost-totally-blind mother. I'm just the programmer and I've only played with it over the last couple days. It has an amazing set of features.
Some of the key PROS for my mother:
o Speaks digits while manually dialing or speaks names when scrolling through the phone book.
o 30-number phone book (her prior phone (Ameriphone JV-35) only stores 10 numbers and this was a major reason for upgrading)
o Pendant can activate speakerphone to answer incoming calls (she is really slow getting to the phone & cordless phones are not an option because of the button size and user interface)
o Pendant can activate a pre-programmed sequence of outgoing calls (avoids a monthly fee for a specialized service) (Note that the ClearVoice Model 100 cannot do this.)
CONS (The first three would be important to someone who is blind):
o Does not announce each step during programming (i.e., the person programming must be able to read the LCD).
o Does not announce "End of phone book" when scrolling through phone book.
o For dialing, only speaks when handset is on cradle and speakerphone is turned off (i.e., if either is off hook, manually-dialed numbers are not spoken and phone book names are not spoken). (I cite this as a con because it forces the user to adapt to the phone, rather than designing the phone as the user might want to use it.)
o Ringer cannot be set to Off (only Low, Med, Hi). (an important feature for napping).
o User manual not available on web site and the paper manual is not easily copied (important for a caregiver who does not live with the user; also useful when making a purchasing decision). I scanned the manual and placed in the Files section at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/blind/. You must sign up as a member. (I would have uploaded it to Amazon, but there is no "Submit a product manual" on the Amazon page.) In addition to the manual, the PDF contains a tip on constructing a barrier to prevent accidental 911 calls.
My biggest concern at this point is that my mother has difficulty learning new things. I'm wondering whether she'll be able to dial out using the phone book: press CLIP (right side) to get into Phone Book mode, scroll up/down (upper right) listening to names, press OK (upper left) to initiate dialing, lift handset (otherwise the speakerphone turns on automatically).
